LAMP-BULB ATTACHING AND DETACHING- DEVICE.
Application filed October 1, 1923. Serial No. 666,018.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, EDWARD 0. BROWN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bismarck, in the county of Burleigh and State of North Dakota, have invented new and useful Improvements in Lamp-Bulb Attaching and Detaching Devices, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is the production of means whereby an electric bulb may be attached to or removed from an elevated socket to obviate the necessity of the employment of step ladders for accomplishing this purpose.
A further object is to produce a device of this character that includes a pole made up of any desired number of removably connected sectionsjwhose upper section carries swingable means which, when arranged in one position will freely receive a lamp bulb therein and which when swung to a second position will effectively grip the bulb to tightly sustain the same therein wherebv the bulb may be screwed into its sockets or re moved therefrom, said swingable gripping meansbeing operated by flexible elements attached thereto and disposed adjacent to the sides of the pole.
A further object is to produce a device of this character in which a flexible lamp bulb grip is employed and is swingably supported upon a post and adjustable to engage with varying sizes of bulbs, said gripping device when swung to one position permitting the free arrangement of the lamp bulb therein and when swung to an opposite position tightly gripping the bulb so that the same may be screwed in or out of its socket, spring means holding the grip in such pos1- tion, flexible means being provided for swinging the grip to either of its said positions, and means being provided for locking the flexible means when the grip is in lamp bulb gripping position.
The foregoing and other objects which will present themselves as the nature of the invention is better understood, may be accomplished by a construction, combination and operative association of parts such as is disclosed by the drawings which accompany and which form part of this application.

The uppermost section 1 has its outer end reduced from its opposite sides to provide a projecting tongue 3. Below the tongue there,
is secured upon the said section 1 a collar 4. The collar has one end formed with apair of spaced lip extensions 5 between which there is pivoted, as at 6 an arm 7. At its opposite side the collar is provided with a single line extension 8 and has arranged at s the opposite sides of the said lip a pair of arms 9 which are pivoted to the lip, as at 10. Arranged in contacting engagement with the faces of the tongue 3 there are the arms 11 of a bifurcated member 12. The arms 2 are gradually spread away from the outer end of the said member 12, and preferably the said arms gradually increase in width from their said connected end. However,
the ends of the arms contacting the tongue 1 are reduced and rounded. Passing through the arms 11 and through the tongue 3 there is a boltfmember 13, and on this bolt'there are sleeves 14: respectively which are incontacting engagement with the arms 11. The
bolt 13 also provides a pivot member for flexible plates 15, the head of the bolt contacting with one of the plates and the opposite threaded end of the bolt having screwed bolt there are arranged washers.
The lamp bulb holder is preferably constructed from a strip of leather or like flexible material, the same beingwidest at its center and from thence gradually reduced to its ends. The strip isfolded upon itself to provide a basket-like holder 17 the sides of which are passed between the arms 11 of the bifurcated or forked member 12 and are likewise passed between the arms 9 and are connectedto the said arms by 111821.18 18. From their'cogmection with the arms 3 the Preferably bev straps are secured together, and preferably have a reinforcing element 19 therebetween to add to the rigidity of this portion of the said straps. For distinction, this portion of the straps will be referred to as a tongueand is indicated by the numeral 20.
The rounded or basket-like portion 17 of the lamp bulb gripping and holding device preferably has its edges reinforced by thongs, and secured by the thongs 2-1. at the narrower open end of the basket, there are the flexible plates 15.
On the sides of the basket 17 there are buckles 22 through which pass straps 23 having spaced apertures to receive the tongues of the buckles therethrough. The straps 23 connect at their outer end a flexible guard 24 preferably of leather. The guard 24 is widest at its center and from thence gradually decreases in width, to the ends to which the straps are secured. The lower edge of the guard has secured thereto a light spring 25 which has its lower con- 'volution secured to an eye 26 on one of the edges of the tongue 3.
The member 12 has passed through its outer end the central portion 27 of a substantially U-shaped bail. The arms 28 of the bail are disposed at outward angles with respect to each other and on the said connecting portion 27 for the said arms there are arranged sleeves 29 which contact with the arms 28 and with the member 12 to hold the hail from side movement with respect to the said member. The arms 28 of the bail terminate in eyes 30 which are engaged by similar eyes 31 on the substantially parallel arms of a second U-shaped bail. The connecting element for the arms 32 of the last mentioned bail is indicated by the numeral 33 and passes through the outer end of the arm 7. On this portion 33 of the bail there are arranged sleeves which contact with the arm 7 and with the arms of the bail to hold the bail from lateral movement through the arm 7.
There is preferably arranged between the sleeves 34 and the arm 7 the eye ends of a loop 35, the said loop being contacted by the inner ends of the sleeve .34, and to this loop there is attached a flexible element in the nature of a chain 36. Connected to the tongue 20 of the basket-like bulb holder there is a plate 41. The plate, in a line with the opening that receives the staff section therethrough is notched at diametrically opposed points which are indicated by the numeral 42. The plate 41 is substaiitially elliptical in plan, and has on its ends upstanding eyes 43 through which the chains 36 and 37 respectively pass. The eyes 43 are of such size and shape as to prevent the free passage of the chains 36 and 37 therethrough, and therefore to grip the said chains.
In operation a pull is'exerted on the chain 37 which swings the arms 9 toa substantially right angular position with respect to the staff and which draws upon the basketlike holder to cause the same to contact with the edges of the arms 11 of the bifurcated handle to swing the same beyond the center of the staff and to allow the spring 38 to further influence the said member 12, while the bail connection between,
the bifurcated or forked member and the arm 7 will cause the said arm to be swung at an upward angle. lVhen in such posi; tion a lamp bulb 44 may be inserted in.
the basket-like holder and have its ends rest on the guard 24. properly positioned a pull is exerted upon the chain 36 which swings the arm 7 at a downward outward angle with respect to the staff. The swinging of the arm influences the connected bails to swing the bifurcated or forked member 12 so that its arms 11 will have a wiping engagement against the sides of the basket-like holder, compress ing the said sides together, and likewise compressing the body portion of the said holder to cause the sameto tightly engage the lamp bulb and to hold the same in a. vertical position to permit of the free screwing of the bulb in its ceiling socket. Of course, a pull upon the lamp bulb grip or holder will swing the arms 11 to an upward angle with respect to the staff. The bulb is screwed in its socket and thereafter a pull is exerted upon the chain 37 to return the parts to their first mentioned position. In, so doing, the staff is held at an angle and the basket-like grip may be drawn over the attached bulb without injury, to or liability of disconnecting the same. The base of the grip which I have referred to as the guard 24, being adjustably associated therewith permits of the device being employed for fixing or removing various sizes of lamp bulbs. I In removing the lamp bulb the parts are positioned as first described, that. is, the basket-like grip or holder is sustained in open condition to permit of the bulb being arranged therein and to rest on the bottom or guard 24 thereof, and the chain 36. is then pulled to cause the arms of the b'ifui cated or forked member to squeeze the sides of the flexible grip 17 against each other and When the bulb is likewise compress the rounded or basket-like bulb engaging portion of the said grip. By turning the staff, the bulb is unscrewed.
The grip or holder may be sustained in either its bulb receiving position or its bulb gripping position by fastening the chains 36 or 37 to one of the eyes 39 on the plate 41, after the said plate has been moved clownwardly on the staff to bring the notches thereof beyond the lugs and the said plate given a half turn on the staff to prevent an upward movement thereof.
It is believed that the foregoing descrip tion, when taken in connection with the drawings, will fully set forth the construction and advantages of my improvement, but it is to be understood that I am not to be restricted to the precise structural details herein set forth but am entitled to make such changes and modifications therefrom as fall within the scope of what I claim.
Having described the invent-ion,I claim 1. In a device for the purpose set forth, a sectional shaft, a forked member pivotally secured to the outer section thereof, op-
positely disposed arms pivotally secured to the said section below the forked member, a centrally folded flexible grip having its sides passing through the forked member and secured to one of the arms, means loosely connecting the forked member with the second arm, flexible pull elements connected with both of the arms, whereby to move the forked member and the grip to open the latter to bulb receiving position when a pull is exerted upon one of said elements, and to cause the forked member -to 7 contact the sides of the grip to compress the same around the bulb received therein when a pull is exerted upon the said second pull element.
2. In a device for the purpose set forth, a sectional staff, oppositely arranged arms pivotally secured thereon, a forked member having its arms pivotally secured to the end a of the said staff section, spring means for holding the forked member in one position, an electric bulb grip comprising a centrally folded flexible member that has its sides passed through the forked member and is secured to one of the arms, a pair of arms bers secured to the respective first mentioned arms, as and for the purpose set forth.
3. In adevioe for the purpose set forth, a sectional staff, oppositely arranged arms pivotally secured thereon, a forked member having its arms pivotally secured to the endof the said staff section, spring means for holding the forked member in one position, an electric bulb grip comprising a centrally folded flexible member that has its sides vpassed through the forked member and is secured to one of the arms, a guard providing a rest for the base of the bulb adjustably secured to the sides of the grip, spring means between the guard and the staff section, a pair of arms attached to the opposite sides of the grip and pivotally supported from the staff, and the said arms being in the path of contact with the arms of the forked member, a yoke secured on the second of the first mentioned arms, a yoke secured on the forked member, and said yokes having interengaging eyes at the ends thereof, and flexible pull members secured to the respec tive first mentioned arms, as and for the purpose set forth.
