Description

CARD INDEX @Hoz auf Patented ug. 26, i924.
UNITED STATES ROBERT C. RUSSELL, OF PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA.
CARD INDEX.
Application filed October 2, 1923. Serial No. 666,109.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that l, ROBERT C. RUSSELL, a citizen of the United States, and resident or Pittsburgh, in the county or Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Card Indexes and l do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description oi' the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in card indexes and more particularly to those of the visible type,-one object of the invention being to so construct the supports whereby the cards are mounted in a holder, that the combined cards and supports may have interlocking but separable relation to each other and particularly so that the card supports with which the` cards have hinged connection, may be reversed in such manner that either tace oi' the card may be disposed uppermost and yet permit the card to be turned on its hinged connection with its support during the act of examination ot the index.
l/Vith this object in view, the invention consists in certain novel features as hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings;
Figure l is a face view ot a portion of a card index illustrating my invention;
Figure 2 is a perspective view of a combined card and sttpport;
Figure 3 is a sectional view showing the positions of the parts when one face of the card is normally exposed, and
Figure 4 is a similar view showing positions of the parts when the other face of the cardis normally exposed.
A portion oi' the holder for a card index is shown at l and is provided at its side edges with flange 2 forming guideways for index card supports 3.
Each card support 3 is formed to provide tongues 4 at its ends to enter the guide-ways of the holder, and to said support an index card is hinged,a slot 5 being formed between the card and its support and centrally located. ln the embodiment of the invention shown in the drawing, the hinge connection between the card and its support is formed by means of fabric 6 cemented to the respective parts of the device.
The card support 3 is provided centrally with elongated tongues 7, 8 which project respectively from the respective edges of the support.
When a plurality orlh cards are assembled in the holder, they will overlie each other and one of the tongues of one card support will pass through the slot 5 between the next card support and the card connected therewith, and hence the several combined devices (consisting of cards and their supports) will have normal interlocking relation but may be separated when necessary during manipulation of the index. Y In the upper portion of Figure l and in Figure 3, the card and its support are disposed to expose one face of the card, so that the latter may be turned up to permit ready examination of its other face or the underlying card, and in the lower part of Figure l and in Figures 2 and 4, the opposite ace of the card is exposed. When the card support is disposed as shown at the upper part of Figure l and in Figure 3, the intermediate tongue 7 will interlock with the next combined card and support and the tongue 8 will be idle. In order that the opposite face ot the card may be normally exposed, the combined device will be removed from the holder l and after turning the same on a vertical axis, the support 7 will be turned on a horizont-al axis aiiorded by the hinged connection of the card to the support. The combined device may then be replaced in the holder and the intermediate tongue 8 will project upwardly to pass through the slot 5 of the adjacent combined device, and the tongue 7 will depend idlv.
Viith my improvements, a card support is provided which is reversible, so that either face of the hinged card may be normally exposed. and so that the combined devices may have interlocking or intermeshing relation to each other, whether one face or the other of the card be normally exposed.
Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is
l. A card index comprising a plurality of cards, and supports having hinge connection with said cards, each card support being reversible and provided on each of its longitudinal edges with a tongue, the structure having a slot adjacent to the hinge connection between the card and support for the plassageof the tongue at one longitudinal edge of :the adjacent eardsu'pport.
2. In a card index, a, combined card and l card support having hinged c :onneetion with each other and having e slot, said support being reversible whereby the card may he disposed to normally expose one or the other face of the card, 'said card support having tongues projecting from its respec- 10 tive longitudinal edges.
In testimony whereof, I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses. y
ROBERT C. RUSSELL.
