Description

s. J. LAMORA PISTON RING Filed Jan. 15 1924 INVENTOR ,Q MIZAZUZOI'CZ WITNESSES Patented Aug. 12, 1924..
SELIPHE JOPHES LAMORA, OF ST.- JOHNSBURY,. VERMONT.
PISTON RING.
Application filed January 15, 1924. Serial No. 686,381.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, SELIPHE J. LAMoRA, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of St. J ohnsbury, in the county of Caledonia and State of Vermont, have invented a new and Improved Piston Ring, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to improvementsin 1o piston rings and more particularly to metal elastic or resilient rings which are designed to fit in grooves of the pistons of internal combustion engines and the like.
An object of the invention is to provide a piston ring with an improved joint at the ends of the rin which absolutely prevents leakage of oi? and gas past the ring and which connecting ends will not become separated and misplaced, which would cause the breaking of the ring or the scoring of the cylinder wall.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts which will be more fully hereinafter described and pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings- Figure 1 is a plan view of my improved plstonring;
, fFigure 2 is a view in side elevation there- Figure 3 is a fragmentary view in section on the line 3-3, Figure 2.
1 represents a curved band or strip constituting my improved piston ring. This band or strip is of desired width and thickvand contraction but prevents leakage of oil.
The extremities of the ring at its respective ends are of general V-shape in transverse section, as shown at 4, so that these extremities constitute interlocking meeting ends to assist in aligning the sections of the ring and preventing lateral spreading of the ends. It will also be noted that I provide an oil groove 5 extending around the outside of the ring. Various slight changes and alterations might be made in the general form of the parts described without departing from my invention, and, hence, I do not limit myself to the precise details set forth but consider myself at liberty to make such slight changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope oflthe appended claim.
I claim:
A piston ring, comprising a curved strip, said strip having a recess in one end at a point spaced from its edges, a tongue on the other end of the strip fittingsaid recess and the extremities of the ends of the strip having V-shaped en agin portions.
