Be it known that I, CHARLES F IsHnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have inventeda new and useful Improvement in Savings Banks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates-particularly to savings-banks which are provided with a plurality of coin chambers adapted to maintain coins of different denominations in assorted,
` stacked relation.
The improved savings-bank in which the present invention is embodied is of the general construction and mode oi operation set forth in my United States Patent No. 1,170,525, granted February 8, 1916. rIhe primary object is to provide improvements in the general construction and mode of operation ot the savings-bank described and claimed in said patent. Further objects are to provide improved coin-admission means and improved locking means. l

In the constructionillustrated, A represents the improved,savings-bank; and B, a stand or support which is especially adapted to support the improved savings-bank when opened and the coins counted by a receiving teller ot a banking institution.
"The improved savings-bank A comprises complemental front and rear sections A Vand A2, respectively, the sections being substantially {iat-sided equipped with cooperating locking devices ior detachably securing them together. These sections are vertical sections. The rear section, because of the function it serves while the coins are Y compartments 2 which are complemental with respect to partial coin compartments 2a with which the cover-section A" is provided interiorly and two corresponding partial coin compartmentsy from a complete coin compartment when the savings-bank is closed. As shown', the coin compartments are adapted to receive coins of different denominations. Y
The plate 1 is provided on its' inner surface with vertical o-r longitudinal flanges 1a which separate the partial coin compartments of the tray-section from each other. The inner wall of the plate l is recessed or provided with longitudinal concavities las 'indicated at '1b. Flanking the longitudinal concavities 1b are plane surfaces 1c whichaflordsurfaces upon 'which the coins may slide when they are being told olf orggcounted by the teller. Y p
The tray-section A2 is further provided near. its lower end with a transverse slot 1d which affords a bottom wall for the coin compartments. The wall 1d is preferably inclined at an Vangle of 121/2o with respect to a horizontal plane, so'tha't when the savingsba-'nlr is in standing position, the coins 3 in the coin compartments will rest on the bottom 'wall 1d, but will incline somewhat with .respect to the axesof thelcoin-stacks. This Y willbe understood from Figs. 22, but it isto be borne in mind that this figure shows the savings-bank in a horizontal position, instead 'of standing on end as shown in Fig. 22, which .is the proper position when the coins are being inserted.
The bottom wall 1d is in reality a transverse flangefpr'ojecting forwardly from the plate 1 of the tray-section near the lower en'd of 'said plate, Vthis flange inclining forwardly and downwardly from the plate. Near the front Vedge of` this'flange, the metal is cutaway, :as indicated at 4, so as to produce a somewh'atsharper inclination. l/Vhen the savings-bank is resting in the position shown in Fig. 22, the upper edge of the stack of :coins vmay be pressed towards the surface 4, which 1s of'sharper inclination, thus fan- `ning77 the coins, or giving them a greater in- -cl1nat1on.` This 1s done afterthecover-section is removed to facilitate the work of telling olf the coins, which may be effected by means of one forefinger, while the coins are received either on the counter or in the other hand of the teller.
TheA front casing-section A is preferably stamped from brass or other'sheet-metal. lt comprises a bowed or concave-convex front .waill 5, lateral flangesi 5a, a top flange 5b, and
a bottom iange 5. The rear or free. edge of thetop flange 51? is equipped at its intermediateaportion with a downturned interlock-flanged whichfisadapted to engage the intermediate portion ofthe upper rear margin of the casing-section A2 at the space 6 which is afforded by the interruption of a marginal flange 7 with which the casingsection A2 is equipped on its rear side (see Fig.
The partial coin chambers 2 of the front casing-section are separated from each other by longitudinal division walls 5, as will be understood from Figs. 7 and 8. These separating walls are preferably formed from sheet-metal strips 7, each strip being bent upon itself along a median longitudinal line, and the free edges of the strip being curved or bent away from each other, to ailord attaching flanges 7 which bear against the inner surface of the front wall 5 of the casing-section A. The strips are secured to said front wall by means of integral clenching lugs 8 which are struck rearwardly from the front wall of the casing-section. These clenching lugs extend thru perforations 9 with which the flanges 7 are provided and the extremities are clenched against the rear surfaces of said flanges. These clenching lugs are. preferably located at the upper portion of the casing section; and the perforations in the front wall of the casing-section are covered by a name-plate 10 which is secured to the front wall of the casing-section by rivets 10'.
The front wall 5 is provided with several vertical series Vof perforations or slots 11 which are located in front of the vertical axes of the several coin chambers. These slots or view-openings enable the coins to be viewed. Associated with the several series of slots are series of graduations 11l which serve to indicate the number of coins in each compartment, so that the savingsbank is thus preferably of the recording, or so-called registering, safe type.
The upper flange or top wall 5b of the casing-section A/ is provided with a series of coin-slots 12 which are so disposed as to be located above the several coin chambers when the savings-bank is closed. These coin-slots Vare preferably disposed obliquely, as shown in Figs. 5 and 11. Secured to the top wall 5b is an inner coin-slot-plate 13 which is separated from the top wall by a small space 13% The plate 13 is provided with coin-slots 12a which register with the slots 12 (Fig. 14). At the ends of the slots 12 the metal is struck upwardly, as indicated at 13, thus providing spacing lugs which are engaged by clenching lugs 5@ which are formed integrally with the upper wall 5b of the casingsection A. These clenching lugs are provided by shearing the metal at the ends of the slots l2, and bending the tongues of metal down thru the slots 12a and clenching them beneath the upwardly offset portions 13b of the metal-plate 18.
The inner, or slot-guard plate 13 is equipped with a pair of spring-wire slotguards A14 for each of the 'coin-slots. Each lil() slot-guard 14 is in the form of a U-shape piece of spring wire having an anchor-arm 14a and a free arm 14h, whose extremity is bent to provide an oblique tongue 14e which extends across the coin-slot.
An anchorage 15 is providedfor the loop portion of each bent wire guard by striking the metal of the plate 13 upwardly at points 15a as will be understood from Figs.- 10 and 12. The metal of the plate 1S is also struck upwardly at points 15b to provide bearings or stops against which the free ends of the anchor-arms 14a bear. The members of the pair of slot-guards corresponding with each coin-slot are reversed in position, as will be understood from Fig. 10, and the spring tongues 141c are separated from each other by a space so that the coin may be initially partially entered between the spring tongues; and when the coin is forced in thru the coin-slot, the spring tongues will separate to admit they coin and then will spring back into the position shown in Fig. 10. It will be understood that the springwire slot-guards are housed between the slotguard supporting-plate 18 and the top wall 5b.
The rear edge of the slot-guard carryingplate 13 is cut away as indicated at 16 in Fig. 9 to admit the upper portion of the rear casing-section A2 in such manner that the central portion of said plate may be embraced or caused to interlock with the depending liange or retainer 5d ofthe casingsection A. When this occurs, the retainer 5d occupies the space 6 and is flush with the marginal iange 7 with which the casingsection A2 is equipped at its rear side.
As will be understood from Figs. 6, 8, 17 and 22, there isprovided below the flange or bottom wall 1b of the coin-chamber a space which affords a bill chamber 18 into which bills may be inserted thru a bill-'slot 18?" with which one lateral flange of the casing-section A is provided. The bill chamber 18 also serves as a chamber for a locking device Cl rPhe locking device C comprises a housing plate 19 which lies parallel with and is secured to the inner surface of the bottom; flange 5C of the casing-section A', a reciprocable locking member or fiat bolt 20 disposed between the housing member 19 and the bottom wall 5" of the casing-section; a U-shape wire spring 21 confined between the bolt 2O and the bottom wall 5c and having one end 21a anchored to the housing member 19 and having the other end 2lb anchored to the bolt 20; and a key-barrel 22 extending thru the lower portion of the front wall 5 of the casing-section and having its inner end' journaled in an upwardly extending projection 19a with which the member 19 is equipped. The rear end of the key-barrel projects some distance thru the bearing member 19a and is provided with a peripheral groove 22a which is engaged by forwardlystruck lugs 19h with which the member 19 is equipped, as will be understood from Fig. 20. A key 23 is adapted to enter the keybarrel. This key is provided with a bit 23a which is adapted to engage a shoulder 202L which is provided by punching a hole thru the bolt 20 which constitutes the bolt, as will be understood from Fig. 19. By this means, the bolt may be retracted against the force of the spring 21. The bolt is provided at its rear edge with tongues or interlock flanges 2Ob which serve to interlock with recesses 24 which are provided in the lower portions of vertical ribs or flanges 24:a with which the plate A2 is equipped on its inner side below the flange 1d.
The housing plate 19 has its end portions struck downwardly to afford attaching langes 19C which are secured to the bottom wall of the casing-section A by means of rivets 25, as will be understood from Figs. 15 and 16. The housing member 19 of the locking mechanism is provided with downwardly struck lugs 19d which alord guides which are engaged by slots 2Oc with which the plate-like bolt 2O is provided. This feature will be understood from Figs. 15, 16 and 21.
The rear casing-section A2 is designed to fit within or be embraced by the marginal portions of the peripheral flange of the front casing-section. To Jfacilitate the easy entry of the rear plate, the edge portions thereof are beveled slightly, as indicated at 26 (Figs. 6, 17 and 22).
As has been indicated, when the casingsections are locked together, the partial coin chambers 2V of the rear casing-section form, with the partial coin chambers 2ZL of the front casing-section, complete vertically disposed coin-c-hambers. The intermediate coin chambers are located between the compl'emental fianges with which the casingsections are provided at their inner sides. The outer or marginal coin chambers are located between the corresponding complemental flanges. and the lateral langes 5" of the casing-section A.
The rear casing-section A2 preferably is provided at its upper portion with a T`slot 27, as shown in Fig. 3. This enables the savings-bank to be hung on a nail or hook, if desired. Assuming the savings-bankto be in the upright/position shown in 1, coins may be inserted thru the coin-slot 12, and the coins will drop to the bottoms oit the coin-chambers and rest upon the inclined `flange 1d. The inclination of this iiange should Vbe such as togive a slight tilt to the individual coins, but it should not be so great as to permit the coins to stand on edge or become jumbled.` Also, the walls of the coin-chambers which confine the` coins llO should permit the coins to drop freely into the coin chambers, but still should be sufficiently close "or conlining to prevent the coins trom beceming jumbled. n
It will be understood from the foregoing' description that the improved savings-bank is adapted to receive the coins and maintain them VVin assorted, stacked relation, the coins of diilerent denominations being contained in different coinV chambers. It will be underA stood, also, that the savings-bank comprises a. pair oil open-faced 'complemental casingsectionsprovided with complementa-l partial coin chambers, sov thatwhen the casingsecti'ons are brought together with their inne-r open faces the coin chambers willbe completed. Furthermore, the rear casingsection o-r tray-section is adapted to maintain the coins in assorted columns when the front casing-section is removed, assuming `the tray-section to be restingin the. substantially horizontal position. y
Then the savings-bank is brought to a banking institution, the teller may lay it down upon a counter with the rear section f bearing` against the counter and may then unlock the front casing-section and remove it from the rear section, leaving the coins standing on edge in the tray-section, the coins. beingY inclined at an angle corresponding with the inclination of the flange ld which constitutes the bottom walls of the 'coin chambers. The teller may then press the upper edge or column 'of coins towards Athe more sharply inclined surface-s, thus givin-g the coins a. greater tilt or inclination and causing them to fan out more. He may then tell off the coins or count them rapidly, beginning at what corresponds with the upper edge of each column. In this opferation, the coins Will slide upon the surfaces 1c whichV flank the longitudinal concavities 1b.
Tf desired, the teller may grasp the rear or bottom end of the tray-section and Withdraw Vthe tray-section from beneath the coins, `allowing the coinsto fan out upon the counter inthe `manner shown in my Patent No. 1,170,525. He may then tell off or count the coins rapidly.
For the convenience of the teller, the. stand for support B Which is especially adapted to support the improved savingsbank has been devised. This may be employed, if desired. The stand B preferably comprises a square.A base 28, a standard 28a, Vand a` square top 28h, the. top being `removably secured to the standard by means of screws 28C. The top is provided with laterallianges 28d which are adapted to receive the savings-bank `freely between them. The top is also provided inside the flanges 28d Y with ribs-28ewhich are separated from the flanges by spaces 28f. The ribs 28e are adapte-d V`to be embraced by the marginal angc 7 of the tray-section, as will be understood by comparison of Figs. 22 and 23. Thus, the ribs 28s will serve to prevent the savings-bank from shifting its position on the top28b of the stand B. In the use of the stand, the savings-bank is placed thereon in the position shown in Figs. 4l, 5 and 7 the teller then unlocks the front casing-section and removes it; he then presses the upper edges of the columns of coins away from him or against the more sharply inclined surfaces 4l; and he then counts the coins which remain properly assorted, according to their denomination.
It is particularly desirable, where the coins are to be counted from the tray-section, to provide the tray-section itself with comparatively shallow partial coin chambers, and to so.l form these partial coin chambers f that they afford substantially flatbottoined guides or runways thru which 'the coins may slide as they are told olif or counted. This facilitates the counting operation. Moreover, this feature tends to prevent disarrangement of the columns of -coins or getting the coins of different denominations mixed. The surfaces lC which tiank the longitudinal'conoavities l" serve to elevate a `coin which lies tiatwise somewhat above the bottom of the recess, so that the linger may engageV the rear edge of the coin in thecounting operation.
The improved savings-bank is simple in construction, may be nninutactured at moderate cost, may readily be given a beautiful linish, and `presents an exceedingly n `at and Vattractive appearance. Moreover, the shape of the device is such as to enable the savings-bank to be readily slipped into a pocket or into a shopping-bag when it is desired to take the sayings-bank to a banking institut-ion for the purpose ot depositing the coutents.
The foregoing detailed description has been given for clearne-ss of understanding only and no unnecessary limitations should be understood therefrom, but the appended claims should be construed as broadly as permissible in View ot the prior art.
