Description

E. L. SHERMAN.
Picture-Holders.
Patented April 28, 1874.
iff-bln @ASUS AMF/707271 HHM/MMM 00./14 Noma/1ML? pawns) UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIcE.
EUGENE L. sHEEMAN, orV EVERGREEN, rowA.
IMPROVEMENT IN PICTURE-HOLDERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 150,364, dated April 28, 1874; application filed october 14, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EUGENE Il. SHERMAN, of Evergreen, in the county of Tama and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cases for Exhibiting Photographs and other Pictures 5 and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in a sectional cylinder in which the sections are pivoted to the heads, and provided with interior movable weights or balls, and with exterior clamps to hold pictures on both sides of 'each section, and the whole inclosed and revolving within a suitable casing having an opening through which one of the sections may be seen at a time, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, which forms a part of this specification, and in which- Figure l is a perspective view of my picturecase. Figs. 2 and 3 represent a simplied form of the revolving cylinder. Fig. et is a detached view of one of the sections. Fig. 5 is an enlarged transverse section of the same, and Fig. 6 is a transverse vertical section of the whole case. v
A represents a box or case of any suitable dimensions, having the upper part curved or semicircular, and the portion from a to b open, and covered with glass. Within this box is placed a cylinder composed of two heads, B B, secured upon a central shaft, C, and having a series of blades or sections, D D, pivoted between them. These sections are curved on both sides, as shown, being substantially of the form shown in Figs. 5 and 6, so that either side will correspond with the periphery of the heads B B. Each section D is at each end provided with a journal, e, upon which it is allowed to turn, and in the center is a cavity, f, for the reception of a ball, roller, or weight, d. Over the points or edges of each blade or section D is placed a V-shaped strip, h, of metal or other suitable material, extending the whole length of the section, and these are held in place by means of rubber bands t 2'..
The pictures to be exhibited are placed upon bothsides of the section, and held by means of the strips h and bands z'.
It will readily be seen that the weights d reverse the position of the sections for each revolution of the cylinder, so as to show one side of the sections during one revolution, and the other side during the next revolution, and so on alternately, first one and then the other side.
In Figs. 2 and 3, I have shown a simplified form of cylinder, in which the cylinder- G is solid, and has longitudinal slots around its circumference, at equal distances apart, for the reception of T -shaped holders m, between which the pictures are placed. and all held by rubber bands n.
Having thus fully described myinvention, what I claim as new in picture-holders, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A series of selfreversing blades or lsections pivoted between two revolving heads, and provided with exterior clamps for holding pictures upon both sides of the sections, and the whole inclosed within a box lor casing, for the purposes herein set forth.
2. The blade or section D, constructed' as described, and provided with journals e e,
cavity f, weight d, strips h l1., and rubber4
