To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, FRANK J. WHELAN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Carton, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

This invention relates to improvements in receptacles, and has particular reference to a carton for the packaging'of cereals, sugar, cofiee and other granular or powdered materials.

An object of the invention is to provide an improved closure for the carton which effectively seals the same before being opened, which'is susceptible of being easily unsealed to readily permit portions of the contents to be poured from the carton as occasion requires, and which is also effective in excluding dirt and vermin from the package after the same has been unsealed.

Another object is to provide a carton of similar construction, which can be manufactured at a minimum cost and without undue waste of stock.

The above and other objects will appear more clearly from the following detail description, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, which illustrates a preferred embodiment of the inventive idea;

In the drawing Figure 1 is a plan view of the blank employed in forming the carton;

Figure 2 is a perspective view of the carton with the various closure fiaps in opened position;

Figure 3 is a perspective view, partly broken away and showing the auxiliary flaps, which are utilized to form a closure after the package has been unsealed, in their closing positions;

Figure 4 is a similar view with all the closure flaps in closing position; and Figure 5 is a similar view with the auxiliary closure flaps in position topermit of the contents of the carton being poured therefrom.

Referring more particularly to the accompanying drawing, it will be seen that the invention contemplates the formation of the carton from a single sheet. of suitable material and that the body portion thereof includes the inner and outer front sections 6 and 7, the back section 8, aside section 9, and the inner and outer side sections 10 and 11, the latter of which form the side of the carton opposite the side section 9when said carton is in its folded position. assembling the carton the blank is folded on the various transverse dotted lines indicated in Figure 1 and the face of the inner front section 6 opposite that shown in said figure, which for purposes of convenience may be termed the outer face, is engaged with the inner face, or the face shown in Figure 1, of the outer front section 7, thus giving the body of the carton a double thickness at its front wall. When thus positioned the free transverse edge of the section 6 extends coincident with the folding line separating the sections 7 and 9. Adhesive of any suitable character is then applied to the outer surface of the inner side section 10 and the inner surface of the outer side section 11, which sections are then brought together to form a double side wall for the carton.

The bottom of the carton is then formed by first folding the bottom side flaps 12 inwardly, then folding either the front or back flaps 13 or 14 down upon the flaps 12, after which adhesive is applied to the outer surface of either of the flaps 13 or 14 and the other 'flapis then folded down upon the inner one.

The carton is thus provided with an open or discharge end which is designed to beclosed by the closure forming the essential features of this invention, said closure including an inner auxiliary closure flap 15 adapted to be folded along the line 16 to engage the end section 17 thereof with the inner surface of the back section 8. poured therefrom when the flaps are in the position shown in Figure 5. In order to provide a closure for the discharge openin 18 after the carton has been unseale whereby dirt and vermin will be excluded from the interiorof the carton, the back section is formed with the outer auxiliary closure flap 19 which is adapted to be folded down along the line 20 upon the inner flap 15 and the section 21 of said flap 19 inserted between the inner and outer front wall sections 6 and 7, as clearly shown in Fi ure 3.

19 are folded as described, whereupon the side closure flaps 22 are folded down upon the outer surface of the flap 19 and a suitable adhesive then appliedjto the outer surfaces of said flaps 22 and the inner surface of the closure flap 23 which forms an extension of the outer front section 7. The latter flap is then folded down upon the side flaps 22 to cause said flaps to adhere and thus effectively seal the carton. .When it is desired to unseal the carton a knife may be inserted from the back thereof and between the flaps 22 and the outer auxiliary closure flap 19. The knife may then be drawn around the top of the carton to sever the flaps 22 and 23 along their folding lines, whereupon the closure flap 19 will be exposed in such manner as to permit of the same being moved to the position shown in Figure 5 to allow the contents of the carton to be poured therefrom, following which the end section 21 may again be inserted between the inner and outer front wall sections to effectively close the discharge opening 18.

From the foregoing description, it will be apparent that the invention provides a carton whichmay initially be effectively sealed and which, after being opened, provides an auxiliary closure for the open end thereof which will adequately protect the contents of the carton.

What is claimed is:

1. A receptacle including a body having an open end, inner and outer auxiliary closure flaps for said open end, the inner flap having a discharge opening normally closed by the outer flap, and other closure flaps positioned adjacent saidouter flap when the package is sealed and adapted to be severed from the body to expose said outer auxiliary flap.

A receptacle including a body having inner and outer front wall sections, side sections and an open end, a closure flap for said open end carried by one of said front wall sections and having a discharge opening, a second closure flap cooperating with the first-named flap and having a portion thereof interposed between said front wall sections when the second flap is in closing position, and flaps carried by said side sections and one of said front wall sections foldable over said closure flaps when the receptacle is sealed and capable of being severed from the latter sections to expose said second closure flap.

3. A receptacle including a body having an open end, inner and outer front wall sections, a back wall section and side sections, a closure flap for said open end carried by the inner front Wall section and having a discharge opening, a second closure flap carried by said back wall section and having a portion interposed between said inner and outer front wall sections when said flaps are in closing position, and other flaps carried by said side sections and one of the other sections foldable over said closure flaps when the receptacle is sealed and capable of being severed from the last-named sections to expose said second closure flap.
