IGNITION DEVICE.
Application led March 13, 1922.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, MAX HANS SENDIG, a
4citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of St. Louis and State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Ignition Device, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in ignition devices, and consists in the novel construction hereinafter disclosed.
An object of the invention is to provide a supplemental explosion chamber having means whereby it may be directly connected into 'a spark plug opening of an engine cylinder, and having a mounting for the spark plug which is separated from the opening to the cylinder by a transverse bathe wall that masks the terminals of the spark plug.
Another object of the invention is to provide in connection with an engine cylinder a supplemental chamber in which the spark plug is mounted, Where y a quantity of dry gas from each charge of the cylinder is accumulated and in which it is ignited and delivered to the engine cylinder in th form of a spread Haine, whereby more perfect ignition of the cylinder charge willzbe effected.
With the foregoing, as well as additional objects in view, I have designed the structure hereinafter more particularly described, reference being made to the accompanying drawing, in which- Fig. l is a vertical section through the device showing its association with the engine cylinder and spark plug.
Fig. 2 is a cross section taken substantially on the line 2-2 of -Fig. 1.
The device of the present invention is adapted for connection into the cylinder of any internal combustion engine It is a known fact that as the charge of gas is injected into lan engine cylinder, due to the vacuum formed in the cylinder on the scavenging stroke of a piston, the lighter or more combustible gas of the charge will rise to the highest oint in the engine cylinder. It is also nown that in internal combustion engines the accumulation of carbon on the ignition points of the spark plug is caused by imperfect combustion of the gas surrounding the points and also in certain instances to the pumping of lubricating oil into the cylinder and against the spark plug and terminal points.
Serial No. 543,305.
The present device is designed both to accomplish a complete combustion of gas in the area of the terminal points of the spark plug and also to protect the terminal points against accumulation of lubricating oil thereon.
In the embodimentofA the invention illustrated in the drawing a wall l of the engine cylinder is provided-with a threaded opening 2, normally for the reception of the spark plug. The present invention includes a supplemental chamber comprising a hollow casing 3 having a tubular extension 4, which extension is eXteriorly threaded so as to be received in the threaded opening of the engine cylinder. The upper wall of the casing 3 has an internally threaded opening 5 into which the spark plug 6 is threaded.
The hollow portion of the casing 3 forms a combustion chamber 7 and in the combustion chamber 7 is a transversely disposed baiie wall 8 having webs 9 projecting laterally therefrom and connected integrally with the internal wall of the casing 3. The baiile wall 8 is circular in form and is disposed between the opening into the engine cylinder and the terminal points of the spark plug.
lVhen the engine cylinder is charged a quantity of rarefied gas is accumulated in the combustion chamber and when ignited by the spark plug the flame resulting therefrom is spread radially by the baiiie wall 8 and is shot downwardly into the engine cylinder, accomplishing substantially complete combustion of the charge. On each up stroke of the piston in the cylinder the baffle wall 8 stands in the path of movement of the oil whenever the action of the engine has a tendency to pump the oil into the engine cylinder, and thus protects the spark -plug terminals from -the oil.
I am aware that the invention may be modified in certain particulars without departing from the spirit and scope thereof. I do not limit myself unessentially, but what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is l. A device of the character described,
comprising a tubular portion adapted to be secured into the usual spark plug openingv of an engine cylinder, a casing in connection with and opening into said tubular portion and being of relatively much greater diameter than said tubular portion, a bafle platesupported within the casing relatively a short distance away from the opening into said tubular portion and having a diameter approximately equal to the diameter of said tubular portion, and a spark plug screwed into the end of said casing opposite from said tubular portion, andsupporting a pair of spark points a greater distance from said baie plate than the distance between said baHe plate and the opening into said tul and having a threaded hole in one end thereof for a spark plug, a tubular extension from the opposite end of the casing of vsmaller diameter than the diameter of the casing and adapted to be screwed into the usual spark plug opening of an engine cylinder, and a baffle plate supported in the casing closer to the opening into said tubular extension than to the end having the spark plug hole, and being of smaller diameter than the diameter of the casing and of approximately the same diameter as the internal diameter of said tubular extension.
