Description

22,1924, 1,502,271 E. J. SALLENBACH PROTECTOR FOR PIPE CONNECTIONS Filed Sept. 14 1922 J dklinbaml Patented July 22, 1924.
men stares J. SALLENBACH, 0F .'JOLIET, ILLINOIS.
rnorno'ron son PIPE confines-Ions.
Application filed September 14., 1922. Serial No. 588,267.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, ERNEST J. SALLEN BAoi-r. a citizen of the United States, residing at Joliet, in the county of "Will and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Protector for Pipe Connections, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to plumbers fittings.
The object ofthe invention is to provide a protector for water closet floor connections, urinal and shower wastes and the like, for use in buildings under construction to prevent plaster and other building material from dropping into the sewer pipes Another object is to so constru'cta protector of this character t'hatfit may be readily applied and quickly removed effecting a great saving in time, and labor in connecting up water closets, urinals, and shower wastes and which is extremely cheap to manufacture.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter d scribed and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the inven tion.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 represents a bottom plan view of a floor connection for water closets with this invention shown applied.
Fig. 2 is a transverse section taken on the line 22 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
In the embodiment shown in Figs. '1, 2 and 3 a floor connection for water closets is shown in the form of an annular casting 1 internally threaded as shown in Fig. 2, for connection with the sewer pipe, and which is equipped at its upper or outer end with an annular radially extending floor flange 2.
This flange 2 is provided with a plurality of bolt receiving apertures here shownin the form of key hole slots 3, four of which are provided, although obviously the number may be varied if found desirable to do so. The larger portion 4 of these slots 3 is designed for the insertion of the angular head 6 of a connecting bolt 5 which is designed for securing the closet to the floor connection. A'washr? is carried, by'the bolt. 5 and is designed to fit over the slot-.13 whe'nthe bolt 5 is in operativeposition.v bolts 5 are held in operativepo'sition b'yniits 8 which are designed to be arranged on the outer face of the flange of a closet bowl.v
Arranged under each key hole slot 3 is a sheet metal counter-sunk box 9 which is designed to provide a housing for the bolt head as shown clearly in Fig. 3, and is provided at its opposite ends with bendable lips 10 and 11 which are designed to pass through slits in a cover disk 12, to secure said disk in operativeposition. v
These boxes 9 overlap the side ,walls of the slots 3 on the lower faces thereof ,as shown clearly in Fig. 3 so that whenthe tongues 10 and 11 are passed through the slits in the disk-like cover 12, and clamped down, said cover will be securely held in operative position on the flange 2.
The cover 12 is made of galvanized iron or other suitable sheet metal and of a size corresponding to the size of the casting 1 including its flange.
In the use of this protector 12, the housings or boxes 9 are arranged below the flange 2 over the openings 3 and the tongues 10 and 11 thereof passed up through the ends of said'openings and through slits 13 in the cover 12 and said tongues bent downward as shown in Figs. 1 and 3 whereby the cover is mounted on the casting, The casting is then screwed onto the waste pipe with the flange 2 embedded in or resting on the floor and the pipe is protected by the cover 12 against the dropping thereinto of plaster or other building material during the process of construction.
hen the building has been completed and it is desired to install a water closet, the cover 12 is removed by simply straightening up the lips 10 and 11 and lifting the disk or cover 12 therefrom. These lips are then bent down again into contact with the flange 2 as shown in Fig 3 and the bolts 5 engaged with the flange 2 by entering the heads 6 thereof through the larger portions 4 of the key hole slots 3 and said. heads are slipped back into the smaller portions of said slots where the bolts are held against turning by the angular formation of the heads. The washers 7 are then placed on the bolts over the key hole openings and then the flange of the closet which is apertured for the passage of the bolts 5 is mounted on the casting with the bolts 5 passing through the apertures therein, and'the nutsrS are applied to the'bolts and tightened up to secure the closet to the connection or casting.
From the above description it Will be seen that the connection constructed and equipped as herein shown and described will avoid any cutting out of cement, marble or tile floors under the floor flange 2 for the insertion of the bolts 5 in addition to preventing allf possibility of the pipes with whichithe fittings are connected being clogged with \plaster and the like.
arranged below said openings and having bendable tongues, a disk-like cover having slits tor the reception of said tongueswhich are designed to be bent into clamping engagement with said coverto retain it in op- I erative position.
' 2. :The combination with a sewer connection in the form of an annular casting having laterally extending flange on its outer end provided with a plurality of key hole bolt receiving openings therein, boxes arranged below said openings and having bendable tongues extending through the openings bolts having annular heads for insertion through said openings into said boxes, a cover having slits to receive said tongues which are bent down into clamping engagement therewith to hold the cover in operative position. 1 In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto ttillXQCl my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
ERNEST J. SALLENBACH.
