UNITED STATES PHILANDER B. DAY, OF VINITA, OKLAHOMA.
ROAD DRAG.
,Application filed April 4, 1921. seriarm. 458,332.
T 0 all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, PHILANDER B. DAY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Vinita, in the county of Craig andState of Oklahoma, have invented a new and useful Road Drag, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to road working devices, and more particularly to a device for dragging a road surface to accomplish the leveling or grading thereof. 1
The primary object of the invention is to provide a road drag which will remove irregularities from a road surface, and simultaneously throw the loose soil to the center of the road.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of this character having a drag blade at the rear thereof for smoothing the road surface after the same has been acted on by the scraping blades of the de vice.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, may be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Referring to the drawings Figure 1 is a bottom plan view of a device constructed in accordance with the present invention.
Figure 2 is a sectional view taken on line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a transverse sectional view taken on line 3-3 of Figure 1.
Referring to the drawings in detail, the drag includes the side bars 5 which are provided with cut out portions adjacent to the ends thereof, the cut out portions extending at angles to accommodate the ends of the drag blades 6 and 7 which are disposed at angles with respect to the surface over which the same are operating.
The scraping blades 8 and 9 have their ends positioned in suitable openings formed in the side bars 5 of the drag, and as shown these scraping blades are disposed at angles with respect to the side bars 5 so that the loose dirt or surface of the road will be fed towards the center of the road.
One edge of each of the scraping blades 8 and 9 is cut away as at 10 to provide a passageway to permit material to pass between the scraping blades, where the same passes to the rear of the drag. In order that the f scraping blades 8 and 9 will be maintained in upright positions, bracing bars 11 are provided, which bracing bars connect the scraping blades and prevent twisting of the same.
The rear drag blade 7 constitutes a surfacing blade, which blade levels the road surface, after the scrapingblades have loosened the same. This rear drag blade 7 is also provided with a cut out portion 12 to permit material to pass from the drag during the operation thereof.
A rod 13 has connection with the side bars 5 of the drag for securing the forward portions of the side bars in suitable spaced relation with each other, while the rod 1 1 which connects the side bars 5 at the rear end of the drag, secures the rear ends of the side bars 5 in suitable spaced relation with each other.
ends of the side bars is a brace rod 15 which has its ends connected to the side bars for securing the central portions of the side bars against movement, with respect to the scraping blades 8 and 9.
Runners 16 are secured to the lower of the side bars 5 to permit the drag to slide freely over the road surface under construction. A metal blade 17 is carried by each of the scraping blades 8 and 9, whereupon the blades will cut into the road surface, to dislodge the soil. The drag blades 6 and 7 are also provided with metallic blades 18 to provide wear surfaces for the blades 6 and 7.
At the forward end of the drag are suitable hook members 19 which provide means for connecting a suitable power device to the drag, whereby the same may be moved over a road surface. 7 7
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is In a road drag, side bars, runners on the lower surfaces of the side bars, rods having connection with the side bar for holding the sidebars in spaced relation with each other, a forward drag blade and a rear drag blade, sail blades being disposed 'at oblique angles with respect to the side bars, the rear drag blade having a cut out portion formed adedges I jacent to one edge thereof, scraping blades arranged at oblique angles Withrespect to the side bars of the drag and operating in vertical planes, said scraping blades having cut out portions formed adjacent to one of the respective ends thereof and disposed in the lower edges thereof, the out out portions in the scraping blades being in alignment with the cut out portion-of the rear drag 'J'. S. MARTIN.
