Description

July 15 :1924.
w. LOCKETT BUTTER CUTTER Filed Dec. 7. 1923 Patented July 15, 1924.
UNITED STATES WILLIAM LOCKETT, 0F PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
' BUTTER- ou'r'rnn.
Application filed December 7, 1923.
To all whom itmag concern:
Be it known that 1.. WILLIAM LooKnT'r, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Butter Cutter, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a novel construction of a butter cutter, comprising a suitable frame open at its top and bottom, and having its sides provided with a plurality of tongues or lips of varying sizes which are arranged in horizontal alignment, but in staggered order vertically or out of vertical alignment and adapted to be engaged by a cutting wire whereby the resultant blocks may be cut to any desired size according to requirements.
It further consists of a novel construction of a butter cutter frame having outer horizontal longitudinally-extending upper side flanges, and an actuator for a transverse cutting member having inwardly deflected bottom terminals engaging the under side of said flanges.
It further consists of other novel features of construction and advantage, all as will be hereinafter pointed out.
Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a butter cutter embodying my invention.
Figure 2 represents a vertical section on line 22, Figure 1.
Figure 3 represents a transverse section on line 33, Figure 2.
Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a print of butter severed by my device.
For the purpose of illustrating my inve; tion, I have shown in the accompanying drawings, a typical embodiment of it by means of which the invention can be advantageously carried out in practice. It is, how ever, to be understood that the various instrumentalities of which my invention consists can be variously arranged and organized and that the in ention is not limited to the exact arrangement and organization of such instrumentalities as herein set forth.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts.
Serial No. 679,113.
flanges 5, which have the downwardly deflected terminals 6,'which act as stop to ar rest the movement of the transverse cutter actuator 7, which comprises the handle 8, which is formed into the arms 9, having the inwardly deflected bottom terminals 10, which engage the underside of the horizontal guide flange 5. 11 designates the transverse cntter, which consists of a wire extending between the arms 9, and riding upon the top of the flanges '5. The sides 2 are provided with a series of upper lips or tongues 12 arranged in horizontal alignment and below said tongues is arranged another row of tongues 13 of lesser width, but out of vertical alignment with said tongues 12. Below the tongues 13 is arranged in horizontal alignment another row of tongues 14:, which are staggered with respect to the tongues 13v The lower row of tongues 15 are in horizontal alignment and are staggered with respect to the tongues above. The tongues are of varying dimensions, so that cuts of different widths may be formed. The cutting wire 16 is shown as hooked on the tongues 14, and positioned to form the transverse cutting wires 17, whose terminals may be tied or fastened in any desired manner, as may be the terminals of the longitudinal wire 18. In Figure 4 I have shown a print of butter 19 as severed by my device, the line 20 showing the cut made by the wire 18, the line 21 showing the cut made by the wire 11 and the lines 22 showing the cut made by the wires 17. In using the device, it is pressed down upon a print of butter, as will be understood from Figure 3, by pressing on the handles a, whereupon the print of butter after the cutter is removed will appear as seen in Figure 4. The transverse cutter 11 can be readily actuated by grasping the handle 7, and the lower terminals are readily guided by their contact with the horizontal flanges 5. By the employment of the lips 12, 13, 1 1 and 15 of varying sizes in conjunction with the cutting wires 17 the butter can be readily cut into sections of varying widths, as is evident.
The transverse cutter 11 may be pulled or pushed through the severed sections of the butter to cut it in half horizontally on the line 21, the frame 7 being adapted by ts lips 10 and the flanges 5 on the frame to be 'fulcrumed on the latter and so may be turned to the right and left thereon to pull or push the wire 11 through the butter on said line 21, as desired or most convenient.
Having thus described my in ention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A butter cutter comprising a frame open at its top and bottom and provided with sides having a plurality of outwardly deflected lips of varying sizes arranged in rows in horizontal alignment but in gered order vertically and out of horizontal alignment and a cutting wire engaging said lips and positioned transversely across the open bottom of said frame.
2, A butter cutter, comprising a frame. open at top and bottom and provided with sides having a plurality of outwardly deflected lips of varying sizes arranged in rows in horizontal alignment but in staggered order vertically and out of vertical alignment. transverse handles extending across each end of said frame, removable parallel cutters across the lower bottom edge of said frame.
3. A butter cutter, comprising a frame, open at top and bottom and provided with sides having a plurality of outwardly deflected lips of varyingsizes arranged in rows in horizontal alignment but in staggered order vertically and out of vertical alignment transverse handles extending across each end of said frame. removable parallel cutters engaged with a desired series of said lips and extending transversely across the lower bottom edgeof said framea longitudinall extending horizontal guide flanges on the outer upper portions of said frame terminating in deflected terminals, a handle having arms provided with inwardly deflected terminals engaging the underside of said longitudinal flanges and a transverse cutting wire having its ends secured to said. handle arms and slidahle upon the top of said longitudinal edge flanges.
