DIE AND CUTTER.
Application filed June 13, 1922.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES G. JOHNSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Worcester, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dies and Cutters, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to a combined die and cutter, its principal object being to provide means for threading and otherwise cutting an article at one and the same -opera tion.
Among other aims and objects of the in vention may be recited the provision of a device of the character mentioned with a view to compactness, in which the number of parts are few, theconstruction simple, cost of production small and efliciency and operation high.
The improvements in the details and arrangement of parts will be apparent from an inspection of the "accompanying drawings, in connection with the description hereinafter contained and wherein a preferred embodiment of the invention is disclosed for the purpose of imparting an understanding of the same.
Referring to the drawings in which like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several views;

The form of article illustrated in Figure :5 is a metal cap that is formed either by castingpinning, drawing or other means, and completed by my. improved die and cutter by threading the exterior. thereof, cutting the groove at around the outside thereof at least as deep, preferably slightly deeper, than the bottom of the threads, trimming the outer end and chamfering the outside near the outer end by removing one or more of the threads. ,7

Heretofore with an article of this character the operations have been successively performed by tools of different forms and structure, necessitating-the securing of the article for each of the tools, then removing it and after the operation again securing it for the next succeeding operation, etc.
In my invention Ihave provided a simple and effective device that performs all of these requisite operations with the same tool while the article is secured but once in a holding device,- instead of. a plurality of times as heretofore. In" these and other way with my improved mechanism the objections heretofore foundin the prior art have been entirely eliminated.
In-Vthe drawings, 10 designates the die holder having a shank 11 and a chamber 12 therein. Secured in the open end of this die holder by screws 13, or the like, is the die 14 having a plurality of flutes 15 between the cutting portions 16.
In the bottom of the chamber 12 is a wedge ring 17 which supports two wedges 18 located diametrically opposite to each other. The back of these wedges is substantially the same shape in cross-section as the flutes 15 so that the same may be readily supported therein, and the beveled inner face 19 has a tongue 20 thereon. These wedges are secured against rotation by the key 38, or the like, and their beveled faces 19 incline outwardly from the Wedge ring 17. Slidab-le upon said wedges are the cutters 21, each of which has a groove 22 in its rear face for engagement with the said tongue 20. .Each of these cutters is provided with a lip 23 of substantially the same width as the groove 24 in the outside of the article to be operated uponand herein designated 25, also a lip 26 to formthe chamfer at 27. by removing one or more of. the threads and also a-cutting edge 28 to trim up slightly the outer end of the article. These cutters are moved endwise as a unit relatively to the die holder, as well as being retained in a proper position relatively to each other by means of a stop collar 29 having a flange 30 thereon which enters a groove 31, in each of said cutters. The outer end of this stop collar is in substantially the same plane as the outer end of said cutters.
Threaded in the die holder 10 and passing through the bushing 32 mounted in the ring 17 is a screw 33-, the head-ofwhich'iswithin the bore 34 of said collar and concentric withits parts substantially as shown in Figure 2 is positioned relatively thereto, the cutters being upon the outside thereof with their outer ends adjacent to the underside of the bead 36, at which time the outer end of the stop collar 29 is in contact with the inner face of the head of said article.
The die holder 10, which is of course continually rotating, as it moves forward carries with it the die '14 and cuts the thread 37 upon the outside thereof- As the die advances the cutters are movedinwardly by reason of their contactwith the wedges 18 and perform their respective operations, that is, cut the groove 24, square the outer end of the article andchamfer the edge adja cent thereto. When the die has reached its outer limit, the cutters have reached their innermost positions.
As the die is withdrawn the cutters move outwardly until they are entirely free from the article, which in its then finished position is easily removed, a new article sub stituted and operations continued as before.
Minor changes and alterations may be made within my invention, aside from those herein suggested, and I would therefore have it understood that I do not'limit myself to the exact construction herein shown and described, but claim all that falls fairly within the spirit and scope of the appended claims.

1. In a device of the character described; a die; a cutter connected therewith; and means for moving said cutter radially relatively to said die during the operation of the die. g V
2. In a device of the character described; a die a cutter connected therewith; means for moving the cutter radially relatively to the die during the operation of the die; and means for noving the cutter parallel with the axis. of the die.
3'. In a device of the character described; a die; a cutter connected therewith; means for moving the cutter radially relatively to the die during the operation of the die and yielding means for moving the cutter parallel to the axis of the die.
Ina device of the character described; adie; a cutter connected therewith; means for moving the cutter radially relatively to the die during the operation of the die;
yielding means for moving the cutter parallel to the axis of the die; and means for limiting said parallel movement.

In a device of the character described; a die; a cutter connectedtherewith; and means for moving said cutter radially relatively to said die, comprising inclined planes held in a fixed position relatively to said 6. In a device of the character described, a die; a plurality of inclined planes connected therewith and lying within the flutes of said die; a plurality of cutters corresponding in number with said planes; means for moving said cutters parallel to the axis of said die; and means for supporting said cutters. upon which the same are radially movable.

In a. device of the character described, av die: a plurality of inclined planes connected therewith and lying within the flutes of said die; a. plurality of cutters correspondii'ig in number with said planes; means for moving said cutters parallel to the axis of said die: means for supporting said outters, upon which the same are radially movable; and means for limiting the axial move.- ment of said cutters.
9. In a device of the character described, a die holder; a .die within said holder; a plurality of wedges lying within the flutes of said. die and held in a fixed position relatively to said holder; a cutter slidably mounted upon each of said wedges: and means for limiting the endwise position of said cutters relatively to said wedges.
10. In a device for threading the exterior of an article and cutting a groove around the outside thereof adjacent to the threaded portion; a die; a cutter movably connected therewith; and means "actuated by the movement of the die for moving said cutter radially relatively to said die so thatsaid cutter will project inwardly beyond the threaded portion thereof.
11. In a device for threadingthe exterior of an article and cutting a groove around the outside thereof adjacent to the threaded portion; a die; a cutter niovably connected therewith; and means actuated by the movement of the die for moving said cutter radially relatively to said die so that said cutter will project inwardly beyond the threaded portion thereof; and means for mounting said cutter upon said die so that the same may rotate therewith and move outwardly relatively thereto while the die is moving parallel to its aztis'.
12. In a device for threading the exterior of an article and cutting a groove around the outside thereof adjacent to the threaded portion, and trimming the outer end thereof; a die; a cutter movably connected therewith for performing both the grooving and trimming operations; and means for moving said cutter radially relatively to said die so that said cutter will extend inwardly inside of the threaded portion thereof.
13. In a device for threading the exterior of an article and cutting a groove in the wall thereof adjacent to the threaded por tion, trimming and chamfering the outer end thereof; a die; a single cutter for cut tin said groove, and trimming and chamferlng the article, movably connect-id with the die; and means for moving said cutter radially relatively to said die so that said cutter will be inside of the threaded portion thereof.
14. In a device of the character described, a die; a plurality of inclined planes connected therewith and lying within the flutes of said die; a plurality of cutters corresponding in number with said planes; means for moving said cutters parallel to the axis of said die; means for supporting said cutters, upon which the same are radially movable; and means for limiting the endwise position of said cutters relatively to said die.
15. In a device of the character described, a die; a plurality of inclined planes connected therewith and lying within the flutes of said die; a plurality of cutters corresponding in number with said planes; means for moving said cutters parallel to the axis of said die; means for supporting said out ters, upon which the same are radially movable; and means for limiting the endwise position of said cutters relatively to said die, and comprising a part fixed relatively to said supporting means and con- .tacting therewith when said supporting means is in its extreme outer position. i
16. In a device of the character described, a die holder; a die; a removable member in said die holder; a plurality of wedges connected with said member and projecting through the flutes of said die; and a cutter having a slidable contact with each of said wedges.
17. In a device of the character described, a die holder; a die; a removable member in said die holder; a plurality of wedges connected with said ring and projecting through the flutes of said die; a cutter having a slidable contact with each of said wedges; and a member movable relatively to said die and having contact with each of said cutters.
18. In a device of the character described, a die holder; a die; a removable member in said die holder; a plurality of wedges connected with said ring and projecting through the flutes of said die; a cutter having a slidable contact with each of said wedges; and a member movable relatively to said die and having contact with each of said cutters; and yielding means, for moving said latter member in one of its directions.
19. In a device of the character described, a die holder; a die; a removable member in said die holder; a plurality of wedges connected with said member and projecting through the flutes of said die; a cutter having a slidable contact with each of said wedges; and a flanged member the flange of which has contact with all of said cutters.
