DISPENSING CARTON.

Application filed January My present invention has reference, in its broad aspect, to improvements in means for packaging and dispensing merchandise, such for instance as roled waxed paper, and contemplates the provision of a unique and improved receptacle having associated therewith an implement affording a tearing or cutting-off edge so that predetermined quantities of such merchandise may be withdrawn from the receptacle and severed from the bulk without removing or displacing the bulk from the receptacle. More particularly it is my purpose to provide a one-piece covered carton, the elements of which are formed by novelly folding a single blank; and such carton having a bent edge providing an improved guide for facilitating the withdrawal of the merchandise contained in the receptacle, and a passage for the merchandise for directing the same to the tearing or cutting-ofi implement, such passage being formed by overlapping portions of the carton. Furthermore, my carton is provided with improved means for enabling one to grasp the free end of the merchandise to withdraw the same from the receptacle; and in folding the blank to produce my carton certain novel interlocking elements are adapted to be utilized for maintaining the carton setup without the use of glue, staples or the like. In addition to the foregoing, other and equally important advantages of my dis-- pensing carton may be briefly defined as, follows; first, the blank from which my carton is formed is exceedingly simple and has no fragile appendages which might become detached or torn off in ordinary handling; second, my carton may be set-up quickly and without the use of mechanical appliances; third, the elements of my carton are so arranged that my cutting or tearing-off implement may be disposed with approximately equal advantage in any one of several positions; fourth, the elements of my carton are further adapted for the utilization of any one of several improved means for facilitating the grasping of the free end of merchandise contained therein, and; fifth, my invention taken in its entirety and including the cutting or tearing-oil implement can be largely fabricated by means of' a common type of stamping machine whichlends to reduction in cost of mana- 2, 1926. facture and permits of its being placed on the market at a relatively small price.

The particular elements of my device employed to accomplish the above and other equally important objects will be hereinafter more fully described in detail and pointed out in the claims appended hereunto and forming a part of this specification.

As has been stated, my carton is formed from a blank such as is shown in Figure 2. The body of the blank is rectangular and is divided (as shown by dotted lines) into six contiguous parallel areas running lengthwise of the body, and which when the body is folded form the front (1), bottom (2), back (3), top (a), overlapping portion of the front (5), and guide strip (6) of my carton. These areas are respectively designated by a-b-c-de and f, of which areas (0) and (f) are of less width than the remain- 'ing areas, all of which are of relatively the same size. he area (6) has formed at each of its ends hook-shaped tabs (g), the area ((2) has elongated ears (h), and the area (3) has extensions (2'), each formed with a pair of lateral wings (j). The extensions (2') are each provided with slits (7c), and area (f) is cut away at its ends as at (l).

All of the foregoing elements of the blank are formed by a single operation of a stamp-- ing machine so that my carton hereinafter described in detail, is ready to be setup soon as the operation forming the blank is completed.

As above described, my carton is formed by folding the blank-along the dotted lines shown in Figure 2, the areas (a), (Z2) (c) and ((Z) forming the front (1), bottom (2) back and top (4), with the area (0) overhanging the front (1) throughout a portion of its width (see Figure 1) to provide an over-lap portion forming a passage (7) through which merchandise, such as rolled waxed paper (X) may be drawn as indicated in Figures 3 and l. The area (f) is bent over to form a guide strip over which the free end of the paper is drawn as shown in Figure 4.

The wings of extensions are folded in and the extensions (5) bent up to form the ends (8) of my carton-the wings, in which position, lie respectively against the front (1) and back and may be gluet fast if desired. but this is not at all necessary since the next operation in setting' up m i carton is to insert the hooked-shaped tabs (g) into slits (is) of extensions thereby locking" the carton in its proper setug posi tion. hly carton is especially designed to receive rolled merchandise, such as waxed paper (X), the free end of which is passed over the guide strip (6) and through the passage (7). However, the overlapping portion (5) terminates short of the bottom of the carton thus providing a free surface which facilitates grasping the free end to withdraw the paper.

As shown in Figures 1 and 4, I mount on the front portion (1) of my carton a toothed tearing-off implement (10) against which the Vpaper (or other merchandise) is adapted to be pressed to. sever a desired quantity of the paper from the bulk thereof container? in the carton. This operat on is facilitated by pressing upon the overlapping portion (5) as shown in Figure 6 to constrict the passage (7) and thereby prevent further withdrawing of paper, or its displacement, during; the tearing operation.

As shown in Figure 3, the tearing-off implement (10) may be mounted on the bottom (2), but irrespective of where it is mounted itis desirable that the edge of the implement extend slightly beyond the adiacent edge of the carton.

While it is bclicrec that the operation of my invention and its advantages will be apparent from the foregoing description, it is desired to particularly call attention to the fact that at no time is it required to handle the roll or bulk of paper within the carton, nor can dust or dirt come in contact with it. Thus paper and other merclnuidise contained in my carton is kept clean and sanitary at all time and is adapted to be withdrawn and severed from the bull: in quantities desired for immediate use.

ii hile in the foregoing, there has been illustrated in the drawings and dcscribcdin the specification such combination and arrangement of elements as constitute the preferred embodiments of my invention. it is nevertheless desired to emphasize the fact that interpretation of my invention should only be conclusive when made in the light of the subjoined claims.

I claim l. 3. A device for containinoand supplying merchandise in selective quantities comprising a receptacle formed with sides, a top and a bottom and having an extension overlapping one of its sides, a guide strip formed on said si'le, and said receptacle formed With means for grasping the free end of merchandise contained therein, said extension, guide strip, the said side and the top constituting therebetween a passage for the merchandise from the receptacle, and means in proximity with the passage for severing desired quan- 1 tities of the merchandise from the bulk with in the receptacle.
