' The invention relates to train operating gates, and has for itsobject'to provide a device of this character comprising a vertically movable'p-ivoted gate adjacent a rail- '6 road crossing and train operated mechanisms located at opposite sides ofthe gate, up and down the track and constructed whereby upon approach of a train from either direction the gate will be moved to a substantially 10 horizontal position by the actuation of one of the mechanisms and returned to inopera-- tive raised position by the actuation of the other mechanism, according to the direction of travel of the train.
A further object is to provide the gate actuating mechanism at opposite sides of the gate with downwardly extending pivoted arms, thelower ends of which are provided with yieldable rod connections and with bell crank levers which control the downward movement of the gate and rock shafts having upwardly extending arms, with which a memberlcarried' by a train engages, and
which rock shaftsare provided with clownwardly extending members having rollers,
which rollers, upon a rocking of the rock shaft in one direction force the downardly extending arms in opposite directions there by imparting pulls on the bcll'crank levers according to the direction of movement of the-train for holding the downwardly extending arms in operative position until released by the train after passing the crossmg. i A further object is to provide a pivoted releasing lever adjacent the rollers which cooperate with the downwardly extending arms, link connections between the releasing levers and the rollers, the links being connected to the releasing levers below their pivotal points and forming means whereby through rod connections, between the lower ends of the releasing lever, the train operated arms will be moved to normal vertical position by the operation of the actuating arm carried by oneof the mechanisms to one side of the gate after the train has passed the crossing and according to the direction of movement of the train. a
A further object is to provide the releasing levers with upwardly and oppositely extending arms which overlie the rollers within the casings, and which arms prevent rocking or operation of the mechanism at the oppositeside of the gate in the direction of 1926. Serial No. 106,673,

Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates a conventional form of railroad track, 2 the gate casing disposed to one side of the track and preferably at a road crossing and 8 a pivoted gate which is pivotally connected at 1 to the upper end of the casing 2. The gate 3 is mounted on a rock shaft 5 by means of a bracket 6, and the shaft 5 is provided atopposite sides of the gate 3 with upwardly extendingarms 6, which arms have pivotally connected thereto at 7 downwardly extending links 8. Connected at 9 to the downwardlyextending links 8 are coiled springs 10, the lower ends of which are connected to adjusting bolts 11, which bolts are in turn connected to the arms 12 of bell crank levers 13,,which bell crank levers a are pivotally mounted at 1st within the cas ing 2. Bell crank levers 13 are provided with downwardly extending arms 15, to the lower ends of which are connected at 16' rods 17 which rods extend in opposite directions as clearly shown in Figure 2, and
through the pipes 18 which are connected n9 to the mechanism casings 19. The mechanism casings 19 are disposed at opposite sides of the casing 52, and a substantial distance thereform, and are disposed adjacent the track 1 in a position where the shoe 20 carried by a cow-catcher 21 of a train will engage the rollers 22 of the operating arms as the train passes in either direction. is the train approaches the first mechanism reached by the train is actuated, thereby moving the gate 3 to a horizontal position, and after the train passes the gate and reaches the second mechanism, the second mechanism is actuated, the first mechanism released, the gate allowed to return to normal inoperative position and the second mechanism is then returned to normal position by means of the first actuated mechanism, all of which will be hereinafter fully set forth. Gate 3 returns to normal position as shown in Figure 4 by of gravity, and through the influence of the weight 24 carried by the rear cnr thereof, and which weight is adjustably mounted on the gate by means of bolts 25 which extend through the gate and through an elongated slot in the weight, therefore it will be seen the gate may be accurately balanced in relation to the springs 10 whereby its action will be positive, and at the same time balanced whereby the springs, when stretched by the actuation of the bell crank levers 13, will easily move the gate to a horizontal position. and into engagement with the shoulder 27 which will limit the downward movement of the gate. It will be noted that the spring 10, which is not actuated will contract thereby preventing movement of the bell crank lever which is not actuated, consequently mechanism connected to the bell crank levers will be maintained in relative position at all times.
Casings 19 are disposed at opposite sides of the gate casing 2 adjacent the track 1 and the mechanism therein is in reverse relation as shown in Figure 2, therefore in describin the mechanism the same numerals will apply to the mechanism in both cases. The lower ends of the arms terminate in horizontally oisposed rock shafts 27 which are rockably mounted in bearing members 28 carried by the undersides of the casing covers One of the ends of the rock shafts 2T terminates in downwardly extending arms 30 which arms are provided with rollers 31. Rollers 31 engage the downwardly extending pivoted levers 32 below the arcuate surfaces 33 thereof, and in positions whereby upon the inward rockin of either of the levers 23, rollers 31 will be forced arcuately against the levers 32, thereby moving said levers in the direction of the arrow a according to the direction of travel of the train. From the above it will be'seen that a train controlled gate is provided which is simple in construction the working parts thereof entirely encased and protected from the weather and the rmechanism constructed in a manner whereby it is positive in its operation, the parts reduced to a minimum, and the device may be easily and quickly applied to a railway crossing. The invention having been set forth what is claimed as new and usefulis:-
1. The combination with a pivoted railroad crossing gate, of train actuated control means for said gate, said control means comprising casings at opposite sidesof the gate,
rock shafts in said casing, upwardly extending arms carried by said rock shafts in the path of an abutment carried by a train, downwardly extending pivoted arms within the casing, downwardly extending arms carried by the rock shafts, arcuate cam surfaces carried by the downwardly extending arms and with which the rollers cooperate, operating connections between the down wardly extending arms and the pivoted gate whereby upon an outward movement of the pivoted arms said'gate will be moved and held in closed position, and releasing mechanisms disposed in said casings and cooperating with each other whereby said downwardly extending arms will be released. I
2. A train actuated pivoted gate mechanism, said mechanism comprising a pivoted gate, casings disposed at opposite sides of other, arcuate surfaces carried by said pivoted levers and with which. the rollers cooperate, connect1ons between the downwardly extending arms and the QlVOtGCl gate, said arcuate surfaces cooperating with the rollers for holding the upwardlyext nding arms ant the pivoted le rs in operated position, pivoted release levels within the casings in reverse relation to each other, upwardly and outwardly curved arms carried by the release levers and overlying the rollers, link connections between the rollers and the release levers and connected to the release. levers below their pivotal points and a connection betweent-he release levers.
3. A gate actuating mechanism train controlled;
said mechanism comprising spaced casings, horizontalh disposed rock levers in said cas ngs, upwardly extending'arms carried by said rock shafts, downwardly extending arms carried by said rock shafts, downwardly extending pivoted levers within the casings in reverse relation to ea h other, rollers carried by extending arms, said rollers cooperating with the inner sides of the ClOVCIlYVillt Ly ex tending levers whereby they "forced outwardly to operative position and held in operative position, operating), connections between the downwardly extending levers and the pivoted gate, downwardly extending release levers pivotally mounted within the casing, a memberconnecting said release levers together, arms carried by the release levers in reverse relation to each other, and overlying the rollers, link connections between the rollers and the release levers in reverse relation to each other, said link con nections being pivotally connected to the pivoted release levers below their pivotal points.
