WILLIAM s. onnni., or KANSAS cifrar, iiissocni.
JACK AND ANCHOR APPARATUS.
Application iiled December 24, 1925. Serial No. 77,582.
This invention relates to apparatus for securely holding the movable kcrane housing of a wrecking crane in van immovable position when the sain-e is being transported 5 or moved from place to place;
Itis well known iii this art,.tha't the heavy crane housing and the machinery contained thereiin-as well as the boom or crane arm,
is inclined its pivot pin unless securely ai crane supporting deck.
to swing around or turn upon ed to the l-leretoi'ore, the tie rods or devices used to hold the crane housing from turning have broken under `the straiiiaiid have been rendered useless in a large majority of the cases.Y y
It is7 therefore, one of the objects of this invention to provide a means for `securely holding the swinging portion of a wrecl-l ing crane in `a secured position when the saine i-s being transported or when it is not in actual use.
A primary object of the present invention is the the ing supporting provision of means, carried by ballast. blocks of the crane,i"or engagcooperating means carried by the crane deck, whereby lthe movable part of the crane is held in a rigid position as well as partiallysupported or jacked up.
A further object or thisinvention is the contemplation oi" ineans for vertically inov ing the movable engaging means whereby it may be' lowered into the holding position to engage the cooperatingr deck-supported portion of the apparatus.
An even further obgect of is to provide suitable means for holdingl the'` this invention vertically movable portion of this apparatus in rigid engagement with the portion carried by the supportingT deck.
Minor objects and refinements ot construction will appear during the cour-se of the detailed speciiication vreferring to the acconipanying drawing which illustrates the p-referred forni oi construction and which shows the jackand anchor apparatus in use with the ordinary wrecking crane of any inake.
In the drawing:
Figure l is .a plan view of the well-known wrecking crane showing the apparatus7 made in accordance with this invention, in place and holding the crane housing and other inovableparts -in an immovable position.
Fig. 2 is a back view-.of the wrecking crane showing the jack .and anchor apparatus in place. f
Fig. 3 is showing the face olf the saine and its relation to the movable oi a wrecking crane.
and immovable portions Fig. 4 is a vertical central section of the apparatus showing the means for raising and lowering the verticallyT movable part, as well as the means used in locking the move able part to the deck supported immovable portion.
. Fig. 5 is a cross on line V-V of Fi section oi the device taken g. 4, and,
Fig. 6 is a bottom plan view of the inovable member of the device.
lvl/lith reference at this time to the drawing in detail, wherein similar reference characters r ter to like parts throughout the .several views, the numeral designates the ordinary supporting deck off a wrecking crane which supports Vthe crane housing 8 and boom 9.
As Alis wellkiiown, the crane proper is equipped with ballast blocks 10 which, in this instances are -sho-wn to be located .at the back To keep housing of the housing 8. 8 and boom 9 roin turning around itsY pivot pin l2 while the saine is being transported, it is desired and necessary to provide means for securing the movable parts to the supporting deck 7. lt
is also desirable to provide a means for partially supporting the weight of the crane at the saine time.
Accordingly, the
completely receive ballast blocks l0, which are usually positioned at each corner of the back of housing 8 are provided with an opening 13 into which is slippcda vertically movable member or block le. lThe depthoi opening 13 is suiiicient to allow the saine to block lll when the saine is raised to theinoperative position and the crane is not being It is desirable to held. 1 secure the movable housing yand boom 8 and 9 respectively when facing either end of the supporting deck 7. A `To carry out this feature, there is provided an engaging the deck. to supporting deck Y means at each corner of. 'lhese members are tired rigidly and con-sist oi a body lhaving a downturned portion l@ which engages 'the sides Figs. 3 and hfl.
of deck 7 as shown vin These members should be tion 16 to which is adixed a guy 19.
guy connects and in a rigid position.
rllhis aids in holding boom 9 lOO lll5
lVhen the device is in the holding or operating position, member` 14e engages body 15 of the deck supported element, and sides of body l5 extend entirely around member lil, which has a part 2l extending downwardly therefrom to enter cavity 22 formed in body l5.
To secure block 14 .and lock the same in place after it is lowered, pin 23 is slidably mounted in body l5 to engage and disengage transverse opening' 24C formed in part Q1 or block lll. A spring 25 resiliently maintains the pin in the engaging position, and it is only necessary to pull outwardly thereon when block le is to be raised.
In so connecting ballast blocks l() and deck T, it is obvious that no swinging movement of the movable parts ot trie crane is allowed, Block let may be as thick as desired, and the parts all made strong enough without n'iakinga bulky apparatus.
is was hereinbeiore mentioned, it is desirable to take some weight oit of the ordinary supports ot the crane by jacking it up slightly during transportation.
'lhe means for doing this ha been combined with the means tor raising and lowering block 11.1. rl`his means may, though not necessarily, include a screw 25 ai'lixed into the block le by a set screw or other means 26. Screw 25 extends downwardly from the top of cavity 13 and into block 14e through the opening 2T to pass through a worm pinion Q8 which is Screwthreaded thereon. This pinion is movably housed in block l-i to raise and lower the same by bearing against shoulder 29. To turn pinion 28, a worin snould be provided in mesh therewith which is operated by any suitable means such as a handle Si, placed in engagement with the squared end 3Q.
Obviously, when worm 30 is turned, gear 2S will be turned about screw 25 and be caused to ride upwardly or downwardly according to the direction of turn of worm 30.
ln this manner, the block and screw 14 and 25 respectively become a lifting jack bez'iring' downwardly against body l5 and up vardly against balast block l0.
'llo hold worm 30 in a tired position after the block le is raised or lowered, a slidably mounted locs'ing' yoke 83 may be provided which engages the squared end 32 as shown in Fig. 3.
Many inodilications may be made in the construction oi" this invention without departing from the spirit ot the appended claims.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
