Description

E. L; PRICE Compound lmp lement N ,159,841 Patented Feb. 16,1975.
HE GRAPHIC CO.PNOT0.-L|TH.39&41 PARK PLACE,N.Y.
UNITED STATES PATENT Orrlon.
EDWARD LIVINGSTON PRICE, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY.
IMPROVEMENT lN COMPOUND IMPLEMENTS.
Specification forming part of Leiters Patent No. 159,841, dated February 16, 1875; application filed December 23, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD LIVINGSTON PRIGE, of the city of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful device, which I denominate a Compound Implement; and I do hereby declare that the following specification, taken in connection with the drawings furnished, is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same.
My invention is adapted for use more particularly to the engrossing-clerk, lawyer, accountant, 850., as an eraser, bodkin, and paper-cutter; and it consists of a metallic blade, pointed at its end not unlike the ordinary eraser, and is provided with an eye or opening near to, although in the rear of, said point, through which tape or twine is admitted and held while the point is thrust through the desired papers to be filed, for which purpose the same is more especially intended. Said device is provided with a suitable handle, by which it is held and manipulated.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 represents a face view of my improved combination-tool with eye arranged parallel with blade; Fig. 2, edge view of same; Fig. 3, same invention with eye longitudinally arranged; Fig. 4, edge view of same.
My invention is represented as being five or six inches in length, including the shank that is, the blade three inches and the shank two inches-both of which may be varied either more or less in length to suit the requirements of the user. The width is represented as three-eighths of an inch, which may be subject to variance. The end of the blade is tapered to a point, with each edge sharp. From the point back to about three-eighths of an inch, more or less, it gradually thickens. Immediately back and adjacent to the thickest part the opening is arranged in which the tape or twine is held. From this opening toward the shank or handle the blade isreduced on both sides sufficiently to allow the said tape or twine to lie below the elevated or thickened part of the blade, so as to follow the point without the friction that would otherwise follow its passage through the papers to be filed together.
The opening through may be arranged tran sversely or parallel with the blade, or it may be made round. The width of the blade is slightly reduced, and the edges slightly rounded, from the eye or opening to the shank, to prevent friction and stretching of the out made by the point.
The accompanying drawing exhibits a suitable formation for my device, which may be made by any of the accustomed methods of manufacturing cutlery, or the ordinary eraser. The eye may be drilled or punched, as may be the most convenient to the manufacturer.
In filing documents or other similar matter I take the desired tape, twine, or other suitable article of like nature, and pass one end of the same through the eye or slit of the bodkin sufficiently far to prevent it from drawing out of its position before the thrust is made. Thus the engrossing-clerk is enabled to perforate the papers to be filed and pass the tape through at the same operation. A combination-tool for the above, and for the various other purposes for which the same is adapted, makes almost an indispensable article in all legislative bodies, courts, law offices, and counting-houses, &c.
Having thus set forth my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure Letters Patent of the United States of America for, is
As a new article of manufacture, the within-described compound implement, consisting of the punch, eraser, and paper-cutter, being provided with an eye, for the purposes herein described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto subscribed my name before two subscribing witnesses.
ED. LIVINGSTON PRICE.
