Description

Patented Aug. 31,- 19260 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
- ROBERT A. PHAIR, OF ALLENDALE, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR, BY MESNE ASSIGN- MENTS, TO H. KOHNSTAMM & (30., INC., A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK.
METHOD OF TREATING TEXTILE MATERIAL.
1N0 Drawing.
My invention aims to provide a treatment for textile materials to facilitate the removal of the impurities therein;
In the preparation of vegetable fibers and a textile materials made thereof it is customary to boil out the fats and waxes and other impurities prior to bleaching, mercerizing or dyeing. In this boiling out operation I propose to add to the water magnesium oleate or one or more of the fatty acid salts of magnesium. Such salts may 'be sulfonated or not. There are other fat-soluble oleates, such for example as the oleates of calcium, aluminum and zinc, which may be substituted for or added to the magnesium oleate or fatty acid salts I prefer to use the oleate in combination with other soap or soluble oils. These are added to the alkaline water used in boiling out the fiber to the extent of about 10% of the alkali used.
By this method less alkali is needed and the goods will be freer from'the Waxes and fats which with previous methods have caused trouble in the bleaching, mercerizing F and dyeing. I
Application filed July 16, 1921. Serial No. 483,357.
The function of the magnesium or other fat-soluble oleate is to lower the surface tension of the alkaline liquor to the fats and waxes and to thereby cause their easy removal by the liquor.
The addition of this composition to the Water increases the efliciency of the alkali about 100%.
Though I have described with great articularity in detail a certain metho in materials embodying the invention, it is not to be understood that the invention is restricted to the particular details described. Various modifications may be made and various additions to the materials, without de- 40 parting from the invention as defined in the following claim.
What I claim is:
The method of removin the fats and waxes in textile materials w ich consistsin boiling them in alkaline solution containing magnesium oleate.
In witness whereof, I ,have hereunto signed my name,
' ROBERT A. PHAIR.
