The invention relates to door or gate fast-enings, and more particularly to novel devices or mechanisms of the kind described having the special characteristics hereinafter defined and pointed out.
Objects and advantages of the invention will be set forth in part hereinafter and in part will be obvious herefrom, or may be learned by practice with the invention, the same being realized and attained by means of the instrumentalities and combinations pointed out in the appended claims.
The invention consists in the novel parts, constructions, arrangements, combinations and improvements herein shown and described.
The accompanying drawings, referred to herein and constituting a part hereof, illustrate one embodiment of the invention, and together with the description, serve to explain the principles of the invention.

Referring in detail to the embodiment of the invention illustrated by way of we ample in the accompanying drawings, the device is shown embodying a base plate 1, provided with suitable means for attachment to a door or gate 2, such as screws 8 and 4, which may be upset on the inside of the structure, as shown in Fig. 2, or which may be locked or anchored into the struc ture in any other suitable manner. As embodied, the base plate 1 terminates at either end in outwardly extending ears 5 and 6, in which the latching member is journaled, and the ears are apertured at or near their centers for this purpose.
The present preferred form of latching device comprises a swinging member with an ample hand grip, such as the hand bail or latch 7, which is formed preferably of a metal rod. The bail as embodied has a central hand grip 8, which may be a straight part of the rod, which is of greater length than the distance between the ears 5 and 6, whereby it projects beyond the edge of the door, to engage with the catch which is supported on the building wall or equivalent part or structure. At the outside end of the grip 8 of the bail or latch 7 the rod is bent inwardly toward both the base 1 and the ear of the base plate (and this may be done at the other end also), as shown at 9 and 10. The ends of said inwardly bent portions 9 and 10 pass through the ears 5 and 6, and preferably are bent on the inside, as shown at 11, to retain the bail latch journal-ed in the ears 5 and 6.
The end 11 of the bail is preferably bent downwardly, as shown in Fig. 6, so that it strikes plate 1 and acts as a stop when the bail 7 lies at rest. The opposite end of the bail 7 is preferably bent upwardly, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 6, and acts as a stop to limit the upward movement of the bail 7 by striking against plate 1. These parts are preferably so proportioned, that when the part 12 of the bail 7' strikes the detent 16, the rising or upward movement of the bail is arrested by the end 11 striking plat-e 1, which snaps the bail or latch 7 into the catch or detent 16. Lug 11 by striking plate 1 immediately after bail 12 has struck 16 causes 12 to rebound into the catch at 17, and requires no manual pressure to snap it down into its seat. .Thus the bail latches automatically by the mere closing of the door.
The outwardly extending end 12 of the bail latch in the construction just described constitutes the part of the device which engages with. the catch or detent on the jamb or .side post 13, as will clearly appear from the drawings.
The catch 16 is preferably constructed and arranged to hold the member 7 firmly against displacement except when it is lifted by the hand of a person wishing to open the door or gate. For this purpose the detent 16 is shaped to have a holding surface or part 17, formed straight as shown in Fig. 3 or concaved as shown in Fig. 2 so that the bail latch 7 will snap 'down under manual pressure, or will drop bygravity, into a seat therewithin, and will remain securely in its seat until lifted by manual pressure in the opposite direction. This may be effected by the natural spring in the dooror --ga teand the catch may be solid or nonsurextending to press the handle 7 ,more

A dooror gatefa-stening comprising-a bail, means for pivotally mounting the bail onthe outer face of thedoor or gate so that it swings about an axis substantially parallel thereto with one end extending beyondone edgcthereof, and a resilient catch secured on the wall adjacent the door or gate into which the extending end of the bail snaps for holding the .door or gate closed for holding the door or gate flush with said wall. A dooror gate fasteningcomprising a plate secured to the outer face .of the door or gate and provided with outwardly extending ears, a' handle element lpivotally carried by the ears and entending beyond the edge of the door or gate and a catch secured on the wall adjacent the gate for engaging one end of the handle element.
6. A door or gate fastening comprising a bail provided with looped ends, means for pivotally mounting thebail on the outer face of the door or gate so that it turns about an axis substantially parallel-thereto and hasoneof its looped ends extending beyond the edge of the door or gate,-.a catch secured on the wall adjacent the door or gate with which one of the looped ends engages for holding the door or gate flush with said wall,.and a'padloclr Iengageable with said looped end and with the catch.
