Briefly stated, the machine about to be described is a calculating attachment for typewriters, and it is adapted for use with ordinary typewriting machines now on the market. The numbers to be added are written by the typewriter and the total is indicated by an accumulator. The accumulator hereafter described comprises a series of total wheels of different orders, and motion is transmitted'from a master wheel to the total wheels. Either the master wheel or the accumulator must travel step by step in respouse to the key operations, so as to change t e denominational relation of the master wheel to the accumulator. The master wheel is therefore splined to a rotary shaft and carried by a master wheel carriage, or denominational carriage, adapted to travel in unison with the platen carriage of the typewriter. To illustrate certain, features of the invention, I have shown in a more or less conventional manner an accumulator A (Figs. I, II and VI). This accumulator comprises a one mg 1. mounted at the front of the machine and provided with total indicating wheels 2 which may be viewed through a sight opening in the top of the housing, and transmission wheels 3 located below and meshing with the total wheels 2. I, II and III) is rigidly secured to the rear end of shaft 14, and this sector 15 meshes with teeth at the lower end of a long feeding lever 16, said lever being detachably secure to the typewriter by means'of apivot screw 17. .F designates the platen carriage of the S typewriter (Figs. I, III and VII), said carriage being adapted to travel back and forth in a straight horizontal line, and it may be actuated in response to the key operations,
as is well understood in this art, the carriage 1 moving one step in response to each key operation. The rear portion of the platen carriage is provided with a long toothed horizontal bar 18. G designates pin-carrying clips straddlin the toothed bar 18 and adustably mounte thereon. Each clip G is provided with a power transmiss on pin 19 adapted to cooperate with certain ele ments at the upper end of the long lever 16 for the purpose of transmitting move- 20 ment from the platen carriage to said long lever. Abutment fingers 20 and 21 at the upper end of lever 16 cooperate in a peculiar manner with the pins 19, as will be hereafter described, but it should be now under- 25 stood that the long lever 16 oscillates in response to movements of the platencarriage,
and. that motion is thus transmitted from the long lever 16 to the sector 15 at the rear of the machine, and thence through the long inclined shaft 14 (Figs. I and II) to the sector 18, which meshes'withthe rack bar 5 0n the master wheel carriage. Motion is thus transmitted from the traveling platen carriage to the master wheel carriage, so as to advance the latter step by step in response to movements of the platen carriage.
When the platen carri e of the type writer reaches a predetermined position, it
begins to transmit movement to the means 40 for feeding the master wheel carriage, and
after the master wheel passes entirely across the accumulator, the feeding means is dis engaged from the platen carri e, penn1tting the latter to continue in motion without advancing the master wheel. Attention is now directed to the means whereby the platen carriage is connected to and discern nected from the long feeding lever 16 at the rear of the typewriting machine. The

and VII. The elongated abutment finger 21 is pivotally mounted on a pin 24 carried by the long lever 16, and shown in Figs. III,
V and VII. This pivoted finger 21 extends into the horizontal path of the traveling pins 19, so as to transmit movement from said pins to the lever 16. As shown most clearly in Figs. III and V, a spring 25 tends to retain the upper portion of finger 21 in engagement with the upper portion of lever across the accumulator,

However, when said lever 16 occupies its starting position (Fig. III) the finger 20 is displaced to locate its free end in an elevated position entirely above the path of the traveling pins 19. At this time a finger 20 extending from the finger 20 engages an abutment screw 29, the latter being mounted in a stationary part of the machine. When one of the traveling pins 19 strikes the, finger 21 it begins to transmit movement to the long lever 16, and as this lever moves from .its starting position the finger 20' will pass from the abutment screw 29 (Fig. VII) and thespring 27 will then move said finger 20 to the position shown b Figs. IV and VII, wherein the end of said nger 20 lies in the path of the traveling pins 19. Movement can then he transmitted in either direction from the pin 19 to the long lever 16, and under these conditions the latter cannot be "accidentally thrown, or otherwise moved, independently of the traveling pin 19.

To understand this feature, it should be noted that the inner face of finger 21 is beveled to. rovide an inclined cam, as shown by Fig. A pin 19 traveling to the right from the position shown in Fig. IV will engage the relatively thick edge of finger 21, but when the platen carriage is restored, the pins 19 will move to the left from the position shown in Fig. IV, and the will then strike the inclined inner face of t e finger 21 'so as to idly move said finger onits pivot 24.
Transmitting movement from the key levers to the rotary master wheel.
. The key levers 31 (Fig. I) form part of the'typewriting machine, and they may be considered as the numeral key levers with which typewriting machines are ordinarily, equipped, it being unnecessary to change the keyboard of the typewriting machine used with this calculating attachment. Each numeral key lever 31 is provided with an extension 32 (Fig. I) having a pin 33 through which motion is transmitted to the calculating machine, the extension 32 being rigidly secured to the key lever. Vertically guided slide bars 34 (Figs. I and II) are connected by means of levers 35 to the key extensions 32, each of said levers 35 bein pivoted to the upper end of one of the side bars 34 (Fig. I) and provided with a hook adapted to receive the pin 33 on one of the key extensions 32. These connecting levers 35 are used to transmit power from the numeral keys to the slide bars 34, and each of said levers may be disengaged from the in 33 on a key lever extension. However, do not deem it necessary to show or describe any means for disconnecting the levers 35 from the key extensions.
There are ten of the vertical slide bars 34 (Figs. I and II) representing the di its 0 to 9, inclusive, and each of these sli e bars, excepting the bar associated with the 0 key, is provided with means for transmitting movement to an oscillatory digit wheel shaft 36. The slide bar 34 associated directly with the numeral 1 key will drive the digit wheel shaft 36 a distance corresponding to one step of the calculatin operation, the slide bar 34 representing the digit 2 being adapted to drive said shaft 36 a distance of two steps, etc., the 9 key being adapted F to drive said shaft nine steps.
To accomplish this each of the slide bars 34 representin the di its 1 to 9, inelusive, may he provided with a predetermined number of rack teeth ada ted to mesh with toothed digit wheel 37 igssI and II), the digit wheels being rigidly secured to the digit wheel shaft 36. It will f now be understood that the typewriter numeral keys representing digits 1 to 9, inclusive, may be used to actuate the slide bars 34 whereby the digit wheel shaft 36 is actuated, and the degree of movement imparted t0 the di 't wheel shaft will depend upon the value 0 the key from which motion is transmitted. Uniform strokes are imparted to the several digit keys and their slide bars 34, but the teeth on the slide bars are normally free of enga ement with the digit wheels 37 and at the beginning of a key stroke the slide bars move idly until their teeth mesh with the digit wheels. It will therefore be understood that the digit wheels 37 are not necessarily uniform in diameter,
and in practice the digitwheels 37 corresponding to the lowest numbers may be relatively large, as shown at the left side of Fig. II.
To restore the slide bars 34, a series of levers 38 is loosely mounted on a rod 39 (Figs. I and II), the forward end of each lever 38 being located between pins 40 on a slide bar.34. A restoring spring 41 is associated with each lever 38, as shown in Fig. I, so as to yieldingly retain the slide bars 34 in their elevated positions.
The means for transmitting movement from the digit wheel shaft 36 to the master wheel shaft 4 is shown in Figs. I and II. The digit wheel shaft 36 oscillates in response to movements of the toothed slide bars 34, but the master wheel shaft is driven continuously in only one direction during the adding operations. 42 designates a ratchet wheel fixed to the integer wheel shaft 36, and 43 designates a air wheel loosely mounted on said shaft. pawl 44, shown by dotted lines in Fig. I, engages the ratchet wheel 42 and 'is pivotally secured to the gear wheel 43. The train of gearing through which motion is transmitted comprises a large gear 45 meshing with the gear wheel 43, a smaller gear wheel 46 meshing with the large gear 45, as shown in Fi i I and II, and another gear wheel 47 mes ing with the gear 46, said gear wheel 47 being fixed to the master wheel shaft 4, as shown in Fig. II. To prevent operation of the calculating mechanism when. the master wheel occupies certain positions, I have shown a locking device including a universal locking plate or bar (Figs. I and II) adapted to cooperate with all of the levers 38 to prevent operation of the numeral keys and slide bars 34. Each of these levers 38 extends between two pins on a slide bar 34; (Fig. I) so as to move with the slide bar. Each lever 38 is also provided with a depending stop finger 51 adapted to cooperate with thelocking bar 50 for the purpose of preventing operation of the key actuated slide bars 34., thereby preventing the transmission of movement from the numeral keys to the calculating mechanism. The locking bar 50 is rigidly secured to an oscillatory shaft 52 provided with a post 53 to which an unlocking spring 54 is secured. The spring 54 tends to shift the locking bar 50 from the paths of stop fingers 51, thereby tending to unlock the mechanism. An operating arm, extending from the locking bar 50, is provided with an operating finger 55 which cooperates with certain devices whereby the looking bar 50 is shifted to lock and unlock the mechanism. The operating finger 55 appears in Figs. I and II and also in Figs. VIII to X-I inclusive.
One of the devices cooperating with the operating finger 55 is in the form of a bell crank lever E pivoted at 56 to a stationary bracket 57 and provided with arms 58 and 59 which are shown most clearly in Figs. VIII to XI inclusive. 60 designates a locking spring connected to the arm 58 of bell crank E, and tending to elevate said arm 58. It is to be understood that the locking spring 60 is stronger than the unlocking spring 54, so if the spring 60 is permitted to elevate the lever arm 58, the latter Wlll act upon the operating finger 55 so as to move the locking bar 50 into the paths of stop fingers 51 as shown by Fig. I. In F lgs. VIII, IX and X. the lever arm 58 occupies its elevated position, and the operating finger 55 cooperates with said arm 58 to retain the locking bar 50 in its locked position, shown by Fig. I. 61 designates a stop pin engaged by the bell crank lever to limit the movement thereof in one direction.

Pawl 67 is provided with an inclined face 70 adapted to engage a stationary pin 71 for a purpose to be hereafter pointed out. The operation of the ratchet 68 and pawl 67 may be generally understood by referrin' to Fig. IX, wherein the pawl is engaged with the ratchet and the bell crank lever E and operating fin er 55 are in their looking positions. If the ratchet 68 is moved to the right from the position shown by Fig. 1X, a longitudinal movement will be imparted to pawl 67 so as to actuate the bell cranlnlever E, thereby shifting said bell crank lever to the position shown by Fig. XI, where it will be automatically locked by the latch arm 62. When a longitudinal motion is imparted to pawl 67, as just pointed out, its inclined face 70 cooperateswith pin 71 with the result of elevating the ratchet-engaging end of the pawl, and when the spring actuated latch arm 62 is thrown to the position shown by Fig. XI,
an extension 62' of said latch arm engages said pawl to entirely disengage the pawl from the ratchet, as shown by Flg'. XI. The
bell crank E is thus released from operating finger 55 in response to the operation of the ratchet and pawl, and after the pawl has performed its function the bell crank is'latched in the position shown by Fig. XI and the pawl is thrown to the inoperative position shown in Fig. XI, where it is held by the latch arm extension 62.
Before describing the precise functions of the ratchet and pawl, I will refer to an intermittent locking member whereby the locking bar 50 is intermittently shifted to its locking position for the purpose of preventing operation of the master wheel while the latter is passing from one denominational position to another, or from one order to another.
F designates an intermittent locking mem her in the form of a segment fixed to the long inclined shaft 14 through which motion is transmitted. from the platen carriage to the master wheel carriage. Teeth 72 and notches 73 are formed in the peripheral face of the locking member F. The operating fin er 55, whereby locking bar 50 is actuated, overlies the peripheral face of the intermittent locking member F, and when said operating finger 55 lies in one of the notches 73, the locking spring 54 (Fig. I) is permitted to retain the locking bar 50 in a position beyond the paths of stop fin ers 51, but when the operating finger 55%ies over one of the teeth 72, said finger 55 is in an elevated position and the looking bar 50 must therefore lie in the paths of stop fingers 51.
To understand the operation of these locking and unlocking devices, it should be home in mind that the locking member F and the ratchet 68 are fixed to the oscillatory shaft 14 so as to move in accordance with move ments of the master wheel carriage.
When the master wheel carriage occupies its starting position, or home position, shown by Fig. II, the lock controlling devices occupy the positions shown by Fig.
VIII, and the key actuated slide bars 34 are thence looked through the medium of the locking bar 50. At this time they operatin finger 55 which extends from the locking ar, is engaged by lever arm 58 (Fig. VIII) and the locking spring 60 acts upon said arm 58 to retain the operating finger 55 in an elevated position, thereby retaining the locking bar 50 (Fig. I) in the paths of stop fingers 51. When the master wheel B travels forwardly from its starting position so as to mesh with the first wheel 3 of the accumulator, the intermittent locking member F and ratchet 68 move in the direction indicated by an arrow in Fig. VIII. As a result, ratchet 68 en ages pawl 67 so as to shift the bell crank i position where it is held by the latch arm 62, thereby permitting the operating finger 55 to engage the peripheral face of the intermittent locking member F. When the master wheel is in mesh with the first wheel of the accumulator, the first notch of the intermittent locking member F will register withthe operating finger 55; thereby permitting said operating finger to move downwardly into said notch. The unlocking.
spring 54 (Fig. I) is then permitted to withdraw the locking bar 50 from the paths of stop fingers 51. From the foregoing description of the operation, it should be understood that the key actuated slide bars 34 are locked when the master wheel carriage occupies its starting position, and that said slide bars are automatically unlocked when the master wheel B meshes with the first wheel 3 of the accumulator.
I will now describe the manner in which the calculating machine is intermittently locked and unlocked as the master wheel to its unlocking advances step by step from one wheel 3 to another. The wheels 3 and the master wheel B are shown in Figs. I and VI. The object is to prevent premature operation of the master wheel. I have already shown that the operatin finger 55 lies in the first notch 73 when t e master wheel registers with the first wheel 3 of the accumulator. To advance the master wheel from the first wheel 3 to the second wheel 3 motion is imparted to the long shaft 14 to which the intermittent locking member F is secured, and in response to a motion of this kind, one of the teeth 72 on locking member F will pass under the operating finger 55 so as to elevate said finger and thereby shift the locking bar 50 to its locked position. When the master wheel B is pro erly meshed with one of the accumulator w eels 3 (Fig. VI) the operating finger 55 lies in one of the notches 73 as indicated by Fig. XI, but when the master wheel travels from one wheel 3 to another, a tooth 72 on looking member F will pass under and elevate the operating finger 55 so as to move the locking bar 50 to its locked position. The master wheel advances step by step, as previously pointed out, and the notches 7.3 in looking member F correspond to the definite denominational positions of the master wheel, it being understood that locking member F advances in unison with the master wheel so as to lock the operating finger 55 in one of the notches 73 when the master wheel is positioned for actuation by the numeral keys. ,By locking and unlocking the calculating mechanism in this manner, I prevent premature operation of a key, which would either cause the number to be introduced into the wrong order in the accumulator, or if the teeth of the master wheel B are wide enough to engage two wheels 3 at the same time. premature operation of the master wheel may result in op eration of two wheels 3 at the same time.
The accumulator A as shown in Fig. II is provided with a space 75, and when the master wheel registers with this space. a period may he rinted by the typewriter for the purpose 0 indicating a decimal point. Since no calculating operation is performed while the master wheel registers with space 75, the calculating machine should be locked. and the intermittent locking member F is provided with a relatively wide tooth 72 which engages the operating finger 55 when the master wheel registers with the decimal space 75.
The lock controlling device herein shown also-causes the locking of the calculating mechanism during the return stroke of the master wheel carriage. I have already re ferred to the spring 10 (Fig. II) whereby the master wheel carriage is quickly restored to its starting position when its op crating means is released from the platen carriage, and this release occurs after the master wheel passes from the wheel of lowest order in the accumulator. To lo-l: the calculating machine during the return stroke of the master wheel carriage, the bell crank lever E is shifted to the position shown by Fig. X, wherein it engages the operating finger to locate the locking bar 50 in the paths of 'stop fingers 51. It is to be understood that while the master wheel carriage is moving forwardly, the bell crank lever E is held in the ineffective position shown b Fig. XI. 76 designates an abutment pin ig. X) carried by the locking member F and adapted to engage an abutment pin 77 on the latch arm 62. When the master wheel reaches its extreme forward position, the abutment pin 76 coopcrates with abutment'pin 77, as shown 1n Fi X, to displace latch arm 62 from the befi crank E, thereby permitting the locking spring to shift said bell crank to the looking position shown in Fig. X. Dunng the return stroke of the master wheel carriage, the locking member F and ratchet 68 move in the direction indicated by an arrow in Fig. X, and the ratchet 68 travels idly under the pawl 67. When the master wheel finally reaches its starting-position, the lock controlling devices occupy the positions shown in Fig. VIII.
Under some conditions, for-examplewhen the platen carriage is quickly shifted n re sponse to the operation of a tabulatmg key, the master wheel carriage may be operated by the motion transmitted from one of the traveling pins 19 (Fig. III) on the rear of the platen carriage, and as the rapld motion of the platen carriage is continued,
the other pin 19 may engage the finger 21 before the master wheel carriage is restored to its starting position. In this event, the master wheel carriage will-be stopped in an intermediate osition. 1nstead ot'being permitted to ma 'e a full re turn stroke to its starting position. Th1s may frequentlv happen when the platen carriage is provided with a series of the traveling pins 19 and also with a tabulating key permitting over-rapid motion of the platen carriage, and the master wheel carriage may be thus stopped in any of its intermedlate positions instead of being permitted to return to the starting position. When this occurs, the calculating machine should be locked during the partial return of the master wheel carriage, and the mechanism should thereafter be unlocked in response to a forward motion of the master Wheel carriage. Fig. IX shows the ositions of the lock controlling devices w en the master wheel is stopped in an intermediate posi- ..tion, without being permitted to complete its return stroke. The locking spring 60 and when said (Fig. IX) then cooperates with bell crank E to retain the operatm finger 55 in its locked position, and the pew 67 engages one of the teeth on the ratchet 68. To advance the master wheel, the shaft 14 will be operated by the platen carriage and the ratchet 68 will therefore move in the direction indicated by an arrow in Fig. IX so as to impart a longitudinal movement to the pawl 67, thereby shifting the bell crank E to its unlocking position shown by Fig. XI, and ermittin the latch arm 62 to retain said 11 crank in this osition. It will now be understood that tie master wheel carriage may be stopped in any intermediate position while-it is returning to its starting position,

The locking device and lock controlling devices herein disclosed revent operation of the calculating mechanism when the master wheel is in itsstarting position, also during each forward step of the master wheel carriage and during the entire return stroke of the master wheel carriage. However, the calculating mechanism may be operated when the master wheel is properly positioned for actuation of the accumulator.
I claim: I
1. In a calculatingmachine, an accumulator provided with an actuator and a denominational carriage movable ste by step to change thedenominational re ation of the actuator to the accumulator, means for imparting a step by-step movement to the denominational carriage, operating means whereby said actuator is motion to said accumulator, locking means for preventing actuation of said operating means, and an unlocking device adapted to unlock said locking means to permit actuation of said operating means, said lockin means including an intermittent lock-actuating member movable step'by step in accordance with movements of said means for imparting a step by step movement to said denominational carriage, and said intermittent lock-actuating member being ineffective when said denominational carriage is positioned for proper actuation of the accumu lator.
2. In a calculating machine, an accumulator provided with an actuator and adsnominational carriage movable step by step to change the denominational relation of the actuator to the accumulator, means for imparting a step by step movement to the denominational carriage, operating means whereby said actuator is driven to transmit driven to transmit" mot-ion to said accumulator, locking means for preventing actuation ofsaid operating means, and an unlocking device adapted to unlock said locking means to permit actuation of said operating means, said locking means includin an intermittent lock actuating member w ereby said operating means is locked during each forward step of said denominational carriage, so as to prevent actuation of said 0 ratin means while said carriage is in motion, an said intermittent lock actuating member having a series of lock actuating teeth adapted to successively actuate the lock;
3. In a calculating machine, an .accumulator provided with an actuatortand a denominational carriage movable step by step to change the denominational relation of the actuator to the accumulator, means for imparting a step by step movement to the denominational carriage, operating means ineluding numeral keys whereby said actuator is driven to transmit motion to said accumulator, key locking means for preventing actuation of said numeral keys, and an unlocking device adapted to unlock said locking means to permit actuation of said numeral keys, said locking means including unintermittent lock actuating member whereby said numeral keys are locked during each forward step of said denominational carriage, so as to prevent'operation of said keys while said carriage is in motion, and said intermittent lock actuating member being driven by said means for imparting a step by step movement to said denominational carriage.
4. In a calculating machine, an accumulator provided with an actuator and a denominational carriage'movable step by step to change the denominational relation of the actuator to the accumulator,'means for imparting a step by step movement to the denominational carriage, operating means including numeral keys whereby said actuator is driven to transmit motion to said accumulator, key locking means for preventing actuation of said numeral keys, and an unlocking device adapted to unlock said locking means to permit actuation of said numeral keys. said locking means including a stop device for preventing actuation of said numeral keys, yielding means-tending to displace said stop device from its effective position, said locking means also including an intermittent actuating member whereby said stop device is forced to its eiiective position during each forward stroke of said denominational carriage, so as to prevent actuation of the keys while said carriage is in motion, and said intermittent actuating member being driven by said means for imparting a step by step movement to said denominational carriage.
5. in a calculating machine, an accumulator provided with an actuator and a denominational carriage movable ste change the denominational re ation of the actuator to the accumulator, means for imparting a step by step movement to the denominational carriage, operating means including numeral keys whereby said actuator is driven to transmit motion to said accumuiator, key locking means for preventing actuation of said numeral keys, and an un ocking device adapted to unlock said locking means to permit actuation of said numera keys, said locking means including a stop device for preventing actuation of said numeral keys, yielding means tending to displace said stop device from its effective position, and an intermittent actuating member having a series of teethwhereby said stop device is forced to its effective position during each forward stroke of said denominational carriage, so as to prevent actuation of said numeral keys while said carriage is in motion, and said intermittent actuating member being driven by said means for imparting a step by step motion to said denominational carriage so as to move in synehronism with said carriage.
6. The combination of a typewriter having numeral keys and a platen carriage, calculating mechanism comprising an accumulator provided with an actuator and a denominational carriage movable step by step to change the denominational relation of the actuator to the accumulator, carriage driving means whereby a step by step motion is transmitted from said platen carriage to said denominational carriage, means whereby motion is transmitted from said numeral keys to said actuator, and means for preventing operation of said actuator while it is passing from one denominational position to another, the last mentioned means including a lock for said numeral keysand an intermittent lock actuating member driven by said platen carriage so as to move in synchronism with said denominational carriage.
7. The combination of a typewriter having numeral keys and a platen carriage, calculating mechanism comprising an accumulator provided with an actuator and a denominational carriage movable step by step to change the denominational relation of the actuator to the accumulator, carriage driving means whereby a step by step motion is transmitted from said platen carriage to said denominational carriage, means whereby motion is transmitted from said numeral keys to said actuator, and means for .reventing operation of said actuator whi e it is passing from one denominational position to another, the last mentioned means including a lock for said numeral keys and an intermittent lock actuating member driven by said platen carriage so as to move in synchronism with said denominational carriage, and an unlocking member whereby said lock by step to is unlocked when said denominational carriage occupies its several denominational positions.

9. The combination of a typewriter having numeral keys and a platen carriage, calculating mechanism comprising an accumulator provided with an actuator and a denominational carriage movable step by step to change the denominational relation of the actuator to the accumulator, carriage driving means whereby a step by step motion is transmitted from said platen carriage to said denominational carriage, means whereby motion is transmitted from said numeral keys to said actuator, and locking means preventing operation of said numeral keys while said denominational carriage is returning to its starting position, said locking means comprising a lock for the numeral keys, yielding means tending to retain said lock in its operative position, and a restraining means adapted to retain said lock in an inoperative position, said restraining means being under the control of said platen carriage.
10. The combination of a typewriter having numeral keys and'a platen carriage, calculating mechanism comprising an accumulator provided with an actuator and a denominational carriage movable step by step to change the denominational relation of the actuator to the accumulator, carriage driving means whereby a step by step motion is transmitted from said laten carnage to said denominational carnage, means whereby motion is transmitted from said numeral keys to said actuator, and locking means preventing operation of said ,numeral keys while said denominational carriage is returning to its starting position, said locking means comprising a lock for the numeral keys, yielding means tending to retain said lock in its operative position, and a restraining means adapted to retain said lock in an inoperative position, said restraining means including a detent released by said platen carriage. The combination of a typewriter having numeral keys and a platen carriage, calculating mechanism comprising an accumulator provided with an actuator and a denominational carriage movable step by step to change the denominational relation of the actuator to the accumulator, carriage driving means whereby a step by step motion is transmitted from said platen carriage to said denominational carriage, means whereby motion is transmitted from said numeral keys to said actuator, locking means comprising a movable stop device associated with said numeral keys and adapted to prevent operation thereof, and a lock actuating device comprising a spring whereby said stop device is shifted to its operative position, a latch device whereby said spring is rendered ineffective while said denominational carriage is moving forwardly, and means whereby said latch device is released upon the completion of the forward motion of the denominational carriage, so as to permit operation of said spring.
'13. In a calculating machine, an accumulator provided with an actuator and a denominational carriage movable step by step to change the denominational relation of the actuator to the accumulator, carriage driving means for imparting a step by step movement to the denominational carriage, key controlled operating means whereby said actuator is driven to transmit motion to said accumulator, restoring means for returning said denominational carriage to its starting position, said restoring means permitting stoppage of said carriage in intermediate positions while it is returning to its starting position, locking means preventing operation of said actuator during the returnmovement of said carriage, and an unlocking device whereby said locking means is unlocked,said unlocking device including an automatic unlooking member effective when said carriage moves forwardly from any of said intermediate positions.
14. In a calculating machine, an accumulator provided with an actuator and a denominational carriage movable step by step to change the denominational relation of the actuator to the accumulator, carriage driving means for imparting a step by step movement to the denominational carriage, key controlled operating means whereby said actuator is driven to transmit motion to said accumulator, restoring means for returning said denominational carriage to its starting position, said restoring means permitting stoppage of said carriage in intermediate positions while it is returning to its starting position, locking means preventing operation of said actuator during the return movement of said carriage, and an unlocking device whereby said locking means is unlocked, said unlocking device including a traveling actuating member movable step by step in accordance with movements of said carriage and an unlocking member adapted to be driven by said traveling actuating member, said unlocking member and its actuating member being effective when said carriage moves forwardly from any of said intermediate ositions.
15. n a calculating machine, an accumulator provided with an actuator and a denominational carriage movable step by step to change the denominational relation of the actuator to the accumulator, carriage driving means for imparting a step by step movement to the denominational carriage, key controlled operating means whereby said actuator is driven to transmit motion to said accumulator, restoring means for returning said denominational carriage to its starting position, said restoring means permitting stoppage of said carriage in intermediate positions while it is returning to its starting position, locking means preventing operation of said actuator during the return movement of said carriage, and an unlocking device whereby said locking means is unlocked when said carriage moves torwardlv, said unlocking device including a traveling actuating member movable in accordance with movements of said carriage and provided with a series of actuating elements corresponding to said intermediate positions of the carriage, and an unlocking member adapted to be driven by each of said actuating elements so as to become cll'ective when said carriage moves forwardly from any or" said intermediate positions.

In a calculating machine, an accumulator provided with an actuator and a 'denominational carriage movable step by step to change the denominational relation of the actuator to the accumulator. carriage drivingmeans for imparting a step by step movement to the denominational carriage, key controlled operating means whereby said actuator is driven to transmit motion to said accumulator, restoring means for returning said denominational carriage to its starting position, said restoring means permitting stoppage of said carriage in intermediate positions while it is returning to its starting position, locking means preventing operation of said actuator during the return movement of said carriage, and an unlocking device whereby said locking means is unlocked when said carriage moves forwardly, said unlocking device including a ratchet and pawl through which the unlocking movement is transmitted, and said ratchet and pawl being driven by the means for imparting movement to said carriage.

In a calculating machine, an accumulator provided with an actuator and a denominational carriage movable step by step to change the denominational relation of the actuator to the accumulator, carriage driving means for im arting a step by step movement to the enominational carriage, key controlled operating means whereby said actuator is driven to transmit motion to said accumulator, restoring means for returning said denominational carriage to its starting position, said restoring means permitting stoppage of said carriage in intermediate positions while it is returning to its starting position, locking means preventing operation of said actuator during the return movement of said carriage. and an unlocking device whereby said locking means is unlocked when said carriage moves forwardly from any of said intermediate positions, said unlocking device including a traveling actuating member movable in accordance with movements of said carriage and provided with a series of actuating teeth corresponding to said intermediate positions of the carriage, and an unlocking member in the form of a pawl adapted to be driven by each of said teeth so as to become etiect ive when said carriage moves forwardly from any of said intermediate positions.

The combination of a typewriter hav- I ing numeral keys and a platen carriage, calculating mechanism comprising an accumulator provided with an actuator and a denominational carriage movable step by step to change the denominational relation of the actuator to the accumulator, means whereby motion is transmitted from said numeral keys to said actuator, carriage driving means whereby a step by step motion is transmitted from said platen carriage to said denominational carriage, said carriage driving means being effective when the platen carriage is in different fields, restoring means for returning said denominational carriage when said platen carriage passes from one of said fields, said restoring means permitting stoppage of said denominational carriage in intermediate positions while the latter is returning to its starting position, locking means whereby said numeral keys are locked during the return movement of said denominational carriage, and an unlocking device whereby said locking means is unlocked in response to a. forward motion of said denominational carriage, said unlocking device including an unlocking member effective when the forward motion begins at any of said intermediate positions. 19. The combination of a typewriter having numeral keys and a platen carriage, calculating mechanism comprising an accumulator provided with an actuator and a denominational carriage movable step by step to change the denominational relation of the actuator to the accumulator, means whereby motion is transmitted from said numeral keys to said actuator,carriage driving means whereby a step by step motion is transmitted from said platen carriage to said denominational carriage, said carriage driving means being effective when the platen carriage is in difierent fields, restoring means for returning said denominational carriage when said platen carriage passes from one of said fields, said restoring means permitting stoppage of said denominational carriage in intermediate positions while the latter is returning to its starting position, locking means whereby said numeral keys,are locked during the return movement of said denominational carriage, and an unlocking device whereby said locking means is unlocked in response to a forward motion of said denominational carriage, said unlocking device including a traveling actuating member movable step by step in accordance with movements of said denominational carriage,
and an unlocking member adapted to be driven by said traveling actuating member when said carriage moves forwardlyfrom any of said intermediate positions.
20. The combination of a typewriter having numeral. keys and a platen carriage, calculating mechanism comprising an accumulator provided with an actuator and a denominational carriage movable step by step to change the denominational relation of the actuator to the accumulator, means whereby motion is transmitted from said numeral keys to said actuator, carriage driving means whereby a step by step motion is transmitted from said platen carriage to said denominational. carriage, said carriage driving means being effective when the platen earriage is in different fields, restoring means for returning said denominational carriage when said platen carriage passes from one of said fields, said restoring means permitting stoppage of said denominational carriage in intermediate positions while the latter is returning to its starting position, locking means whereby said numeral keys are locked during the return movement of said denominational carriage, and an unlocking device whereby said locking means is unlocked in response to a forward motion of said denominational carriage, said unlocking device including a traveling actuating member driven in one direction by said platen carriage and restored by said restorin'gmeans, said traveling actuating member having a series of actuating elements cor responding to said intermediate positions of the denominational carriage, and an unlocking member adapted to be .driven by each of said actuating elements so as to become effective when said denominational carriage moves forwardly from any of said intermediate positions.
21. The combination of a typewriter having numeral keys and a platen carriage, calculating mechanism comprising an accumulator provided with an actuator and a denominationa'l carriage movable step by step to change the denominational relation of the actuator to the accumulator, means whereby motion is transmitted from said numeral keys to said actuator, carriage driving means whereby a step'by step motion is transmitted from said plat en carriage to said dcnominational carriage, said carriage driving means being efiective when the platen carriage is in different fields, restoring means for returning said denominational carriage when said platen carriage passes from one of said fields, said restoring means permitting stoppage of said denominational carriage in intermediate positions while the latter is returning to its starting position, locking means whereby said numeral keys are locked during the return movement of said denominational carriage,and an unlocking device whereby said. locking means is unlocked in response to a forward motion of said denominational carriage, said unlocking device including a ratchet through which the unlocking movement is transmitted, and said ratchet being driven in one direction by said platen carriage and in the opposite direction by said restoring means.

The combination of a typewriter having numeral keys and a platen carriage, calculating mechanism comprising an accumulator provided. with an actuator and a denominational carriage movable step by step to change the denominational relation of the actuator to the accumulator. means whereby motion is transmitted from said numeral keys to said actuator, carriage driving means whereby a step by step motion is transmitted from said platen carriage to said denominational carriage, said carriage driving means being effective when the platen carriage is in different fields, restoring means for returning said denominational carriage when said platen carriage passes transmit the unlocking movement, a spring tending to retain said pawl in engagement with said ratchet member, and means for retainingsaid pawl in an inoperative position after it' has been actuated by said ratchet member.

The combination of a typewriter having numeral keys and a platen carriage, calculating mechanism comprising an accumulator provided with an actuator and a denominational carriage movable step by step to change the denominational relation of the actuator to the accumulator. carnage driving means whereby a step by step movement is transmitted from said platen carriage to said denominational carriage, said driving means comprising a plurality of travelers carried by said platen carriage and a transmission member through which motion is transmitted from said travelers to said denominational carriage, said travelers being separated from each other so as to successively transmit movement while said platen carriage is in different fields, restoring means adapted to return said denominational carriage when said transmission member is released from one of said travelers, means for transmitting movement from said numeral keys to said actuator, locking means whereby said numeral keys are locked during the return movement of said denominational carriage, and an unlocking device whereby said locking means is unlocked in response to a forward motion of said denominational carriage, said unlocking device including a ratchet actuated unlocking member adapted to become effective when said denomination carriage passes from one denominational position to another.

The combination of a. typewriter having numeal keys and a platen carriage, calculating mechanism comprising an accumulator provided with an actuator and a denominational carriage movable step by step to change the denominational relation of the actuator to the accumulator, carriage driving means whereby a step by step motion is transmitted from said platen carriage to said denominational carriage, means whereby motion is transmitted from said numeral keys to said actuator, and locking means for preventing operation of said actuator while said denominational carriage is passing from one denominational posi tion to another and also while it is returning to its starting position, the last mentioned means including an intermittent lock actuating member whereby said numeral keys are locking during each forward step of said denominational carriage and another lock actuating member whereby said keys are locked during the return movement of said denominational carriage, and both of said lock actuating members being driven by said platen carriage.
25. In a calculating machine, an accumulator provided with an actuator and a denominational carriage movable step by step to change the denominational relation of the actuator to the accumulator, carriage driving means for imparting a step by step movement to the denominational carriage, key controlled operating means whereby said actuator is driven to transmit motion to said accumulator, restoring means for returning said denominational carriage to its starting position, said restoring means permitting stoppage of said carriage in intermediate positions while it is returning to its starting position, locking means preventing opera tion of said actuator while said denominational carriage is passing from one denominational position to another and also while said carriage is returning to its starting position, and an unlocking device whereby said locking means is unlocked in response to any forward movement of said carriage, said locking means and unlocking device being under the control of said carriage driving means.
26. The combination of a typewriter having numeral keys and a platen carriage, calculating mechanism comprising an accumulator provided with an actuator and a denominational carriage movable step by step to change the denominational relation of the actuator to the accumulator, carriage driving means whereby a step by step motion is transmitted from said platen carriage to said denominational carriage, means whereby motion is transmitted from said numeral keys to said actuator, locking means adapted to prevent operation of said numeral keys, said locking means including an intermittent lock actuating member movable step by step in response tomovemcnts of said platen carriage, so as to beconie ell'cctive in response to each forward step ot the denominational carriage, and an unlerking device including a ratchet and pawl driven by said platen carriage so as to unlock said locking means in response to a forward motion of said platen carriage.
27. The combination of a typewriter having numeral keys and a platen carriage, calculating mechanism comprising an accumulator provided with an actuator and a denominational carriage movable step by step to change the denominational relation of the actuator to the accumulator, carriage driving means whereby a step by step motion is transmitted from said platen carriage to said denominational carriage, means whereby motion is transmitted from said numeral keys to said actuator, a stop device adapted to prevent operation of said numeral keys, a spring" tending to move said stop device to an inoperative position, an oscillatory operating member having a succession of operating teeth whereby said stop device is repeatedly shifted to its operative position, said oscillatory operating member being driven by said carriage driving means so as to operate said'sto device during each forward step of said denominational carriage.
28. The combination of a typewriter having numeral keys and a platen carriage, calculating mechanism comprising an accumulator provided with an actuator and a denominational carriage movable step by step to change the denominational relation of the actuator to the accumulator, carriage driving means whereby a step by step motion is transmitted from said platen carriage to said denominational carriage, means whereby motion is transmitted from said numeral keys to said actuator, a stop device adapted to prevent operation of said numeral keys, a spring tending to move said stop device to an inoperative position, an oscillatory operating member having a succession of operating teeth whereby said stop device is repeatedly shifted to its operative position, said oscillatory operating member being driven by said carriage driving means so as to 0perate said stop device during each forward step of said denominational carriage, atrippable spring actuated operating member whereby said stop device is rendered effective during the return movement of said denominational carriage, and a resetting device for restoring said trippable operating member, said resetting device including a ratchet and pawl driven by said carriage driving means so as to become effective in response to a forward motion of said platen carriage.
29. In a machine of the class described, the combination with a series of adding keys, and an adding mechanism including denomination selecting mechanism movable back and forth, of key locking means operated by the movement of the denomination selecting mechanism in one direction to lock the keys, and means for holding the keys locked during the return movement of said mechanism.
