Description

WILLIAM FORSTNER, OF IRVINGTON, NEV JERSEY, ASSIGNOIL T0 FORSTNEB CHAIN CORPORATION, OF IRVING-TON, NEW JERSEY, A. CORPORATION OF NEW JERSEY.
CHAIN.
Application filed May 5,
This invention relates to an improved construction of ornamental chain; and has for its object to provide a novel construction of such a chain having ornamental members connected to the links thereof.
A further object of this invention is to provide a chain having a series of flat, elongated bar-shaped links connected together and a decoration for the bar being formed by folding a pair of loop-shaped members to stradd e the bar and extend in opposite directions thereon, these folded members being forcea against the sides of the bar to grip and so be firmly connected to the same without the use of solder.
Vs ith these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, as will be more fully de: scribed, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 is a top view of my improved chain having decorated bar-shaped links.
Figure 2 is a side elevation of the chain shown in Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a perspective View showing the bar-shaped links connected together before the decoration has been applied thereto.
Figure d is a perspective view showing one of the. decorating loop-shaped members before being folded.
Figure 5 shows one of these members as partially folded.
Figure 6 shows a filler bar also employed as an ornamental member to be connected to the bar links.
Figure 7 shows a chain with one of its links having the ornamental loops partially folded to engage the bar links and one of the links with the loop ornaments tightly folded into position thereon.
Figure 8 is a perspective view of my improved chain showing the progressive steps for applying the ornaments thereto, one bar link having an ornament partially folded in position thereon and another link showing the loop-shaped members more completely folded with the ornamental filler bars ready to be positioned therein, while a third link shows the filler bars as in position on the link and gripped by the loop links to re tain all the members in position without the use of solder. I

Figure 9 is a section on line 9-9 of Figure 2.
It is often found desirable in the practical construction of ornamental chains for per sonal wear, such as watch chains, key chains, and chains for other useful and decorative purposes, of advantage to provide a chain having its base links of a series of elongated bars linked together and preferably notched on their edges, to provide an attractive decoration for these bar-shaped links by folding a pair of loop-like members to straddle the bar links and engage the notches of the same and to extend in opposite directions along the sides of the bar and in some instances to provide a filler bar to be inserted into the space of the folded loop members to provide further ornamentation for the link and as these different members which constitute the composite link may be each formed of a differently colored gold or metal such as green, white'or red gold, a link of very attractive appearance is provided yet one which is strong and durable in construction, and the following is a detailed description of one construction of my improved chains showing an arrangement of parts by which thelinks of the chain may be decorated by attaching members thereto without the use of solder In order to provide an ornamentation for the chain, I first form the base links of a strip or bar 10, preferably of flat-sided material pierced at 11 at its ends to receive a connecting link 12. These bars are also preferably notched as at 13 on opposite edges.
In order to permanently and rigidly attach a decoration to this bar, which may be of metal different in color from that of the bar link, I have provided an elongated loop-like member 14 having an open center portion 15 with side arms 16.
This loop-like member is folded first into the position illustrated in Figure 5 when it is passed over the end of the bar to straddle the same, the loop at the bend 17 being inserted into the notches 13 on the bar and two of these loops are positioned thereon to extend in opposite directions along the surface of the bar.
In some instances these loop members are pressed tightly to firmly engage the side walls of the bar to securely attach them in position thereon. In other instances, I insert a filler bar 18 into the spaces of the two oppositely extending loop members to fill this space, these bars being of a shape and size thatv when the side arms 16 of the loop members are forced inwardly they will be caused to grip this filler bar and so firmly retain it in the space of the loop, which engaged bar and also the oppositely folded arms 16 of the loop when pressedinwardly toward each other may be caused to tightly grip the sidefaces' 20 of the bar link to firmly secure the whole together.
This filler bar in addition to performing its ornamental function also serves as a key to hold the folded loop members in alignment one with the other.
My improved composite link may be built up and be formed of different kinds and colors of materials and when assembled present a very handsome and attractive and are highly ornamental in appearance.
The foregoing description is directed solely towards the construction illustrated, but I desire it to be understood that I reserve the privilege of resorting to all the mechanical changes'to which the device is susceptible, the invention being defined and limited only by the terms of the appended claims.
I claim:
1. An ornamental chain having a series of connected bar-like links, and a decoration on this bar comprising a pair of elongated loop-like members each folded upon itself to straddle said bar at its middle portion and extend in opposite directions along its sides.
2. An ornamental chain having a barshaped link with notched edges, and a decoration on the bar comprising a pair of loop members folded in U-shape to straddle the bar and extend in opposite directions along its length, the fold of said loops engaging said notches to assist in retaining said members in position on the bar.
3. An ornamental chain having a series of bar shaped links connected together, a decoration on the bar comprising a pair of loop members, each having a central space and folded upon itself over the bar to extend in opposite directions along the same, a filler bar fitted into the spaces in the loop members, the arms of said members gripping said filler bar and the sides of the bar link to lock the whole together.
l. An ornamental chain having a series of connected bar-shaped links with notched edges, a decoration on the bar comprising a pair of elongated loop members having a hollow center portion and folded to straddle the bar and to enter the notches at the fold and extend oppositely along the bar, and a filler bar of a length to extend into the space of both folded members and gripped by said member to be retained therein without the use of solder.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
