SAFETY HOOK.
Application filed December The general object of my present invention is the provision of a hook of simple and strong construction, susceptible of being put to various uses and adapted when subjected to draft or pull to be held in a safely closed state, and also adapted when relieved of draft and properly manipu ated to be expeditiously and easily opened with but little effort on the part of the operator.
To the attainment of the foregoing, the invention consists in the improvement as hereinafter described and definitely claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification:
Figure 1 is a side elevation showing my novel hook in open state.
Figure 2 is a similar view showing the hook as closed.
Figure 3 is an elevation at to Figure 2.
Figure 4 is a. transverse section taken in the plane indicated by the line of Figure 2.
Similar numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all of the views of the drawings.
My novel hook comprises an open linl: body 1 of greater length than Width and preferably with concavo convex ends 2, and jaws 3 and 4 having closed eyes 5 at their heel ends which receive the body 1 and are permanently connected to the said body 1.
In addition to the eyes 5 through which the bar of the link-like body 1 is freely adjustable, the jaws 3 and 1 comprise intermediate side by side. flat portions 6 pivotally connected together at 7, and'bills 8 at the opposite ends of the jaws with reference to the eyes 5. The flat portions 6 are disposed at right angles to the greatest width of the eyes 5, and the bills 8 are reversely arranged and are disposed in parallel plane whereby when the eyes 5 are moved together and the bills 8 are located side by side, the said bills 8 will form a closed retainer for the connection of a link 9 such as shown in Figures 2 and 3 or any other analogous device. It
will also be manifest that the greater the pull on the link 9 in the direction indicated by arrow in Figures 2 and 3, the more strongly will the hook be held in a closed state so that there will be no liability what ever of the link 9 or analogous device being casually disconnected from the hook. When, however, the link 9 is relieved of pull, and the body 2 is manipulated from the position shown in Figure 2 to that shown in Figure 1, the eyes 5 of the jaws may be moved apart on one of the long sides of the body 1 so as to move the bills 8 apart and permit of the ready disassociation of the link 9 or analogous open device from the bills 8.
My novel hook is adapted to be formed of wrought iron steel or other appropriate material, and is inexpensive and at the same time strong and durable.
The hook is designed and more particularly for use in brace connections, though it may be put to many other uses to advantage.
While I prefer the structure disclosed, my invention is defined by my appended claim within the scope of which structural changes may be made without departure from my invention.
Having described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, 1s:
A device of the class described comprising an open link body of greater length than width with concavo convex ends, pivoted jaw members formed with side by side flat portions intermediate their ends, closed eyes on the jaws at one end thereof receiving the body and permanently connected thereto, said eyes being disposed at right angles to the flat portions of the jaws, oppositely disposed bills formed on the ends of the jaws opposite the eyes adapted to be in alignment to form a closed loop and said bills being formed to be disposed side by side when in closed position.
