Description

NITED ,STATES PATENT UEErcE.
JASPER THAYER, OF NEW ORLEANS,VLOUISIANA.
IMPROVEMENT lN COTTON-BALE TIES.
Specifica-tion forming part of Letters Patent No. 159,531, dated February 9, 1875; application filed July 2, 1874.
To all whom it may concern.:
Be it known that I, JASPER THAYER, of the city of New Orleans, parish of Orleans, State of Louisiana, have invented a new and useful Improvement for Fastening Metallic Hoops or Bands upon Gotton-Bales, or other packages upon which metallic hoops or bands are used.
The object of my invention is to provide a cheap, simple, and secure tie, without waste of material in manufacturing; also, one that does not rely upon the expansive force of the material baled to fasten or secure the same.
This is accomplished, by my invention, by means of lips punched in such a shape, and set out in such a manner, as to allow a free and easy union to be made of 'the lips, after the hoops or bands are passed around the bale or package to be secured.
The construction and combination of' the different parts of my invention will be more readily understood by reference to the d raw,
ings, which l make a part of this specification, wherein- Figure 1 represents the hand united together by my lip-fastening; Fig. 2, the'manner in which the lips are united together. Figs. 3
and 4. represent the two ends of the band punched, and shape of lip.
I do not confine myself to this peculiar shape of lip, as other shapes can be used; neither do I confine myself to a single-lip fastening, as a doublelip on each end of the band can be used in the same manner as the single lip. The lips can also be punched to Work right or left handed.
A A, ends of band. B C in Fig. 1 represent the two ends of the band united together by the lips, which form a perfect lock or fastening. B and (l in F-ig. 2 show the two lips, and the manner in which they are put together when fastened upon bale or package. G in Fig. 3 is the lip in the short end of the band, which is punched, and by a suitablyshaped die the lip is'formed in such a shape as to allow the lip B to enter easily. B B in Fig. 4 represent the lips in the long end of the band, which are punched in the same manner as the lip C in Fig. 3, except the lips v are set out on the opposite side.
The long end of the band will have as many lips punched in it as shall be necessary to take up the slack of such packages as have to be compressed.
Having thus described my invention, I claimy The bale-tie consisting of the band A, having the L-shaped and outward-bulging lips B punched into each end thereof, and adapted to be locked together, substantially as specified.
JASPER THAYER.
