UNITED'STATES PATENT ()F F l C E HAROLD L. CHILDS, F ELYRIA, OHIO.
COMBINATION TABLE.
Application filed .Tu1y 1 6, 1923. Serial No. 651,766.
This invention relates toimproveme'nts in a combination table.
An object of my invention is to provide a structure which can be used either as an ordinary table, or as a support for a sewing machine head.
Another object of my invention is to provide a collapsible table, constructed to permit the legs to be folded beneath the table top when not being used.
Another object of my invention resides in the manner in which the legs of the table are secured to provide a solid support for the top.
These and other objects will appear hereinafter.
In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate my invention,
Fig. 1 is a top plan View of my improved table showing an opening into which a sewing machine can be seated.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same.
Fig. 3 is a front view of the same.
Fig. 4 is a rear view of the same.
Fig. 5 is a top plane of the table with the cover in place to provide a smooth top.
Fig. 6 is a fragmentary View showing the manner in which the panels are secured to the table.
Fig. 7 is a section taken on line AA of Fig.
Fig. 8 is a fragmentary view showing the manner of securing the table legs, and
Fig. 9 is a front elevation of the table with the legs folded.
Referring to the drawings, which illustrate an embodiment of my invention, by characters of reference the table frame is shown consisting of sidemembers 10 and end members 11 secured together. 7 The frame illustrated 1S rectangular, but it can be constructed in other shapes if desired. A op 12 extends over and is secured upon the upper portion of the frame.
The frame is supported upon two pairs of legs 13 and 14, which are secured one at each end of the frame. Each pair of legs are secured rigidly together by transversely extending members 15 which extend therebetween. The pairs of legs are hinged at 16 and 17 to the inner side of the end members of the frame and are positioned in dif ferent horizontal planes so that they can be swung inwardly into the frame, one beneath the other when desired, and the ends thereof are arranged to extend under and support the lower edge of the end members .of the frame when extended.
The top 12 is provided with a rectangular opening 24- therethrough to receive a sewing machine head. Braces 25 and 26 extend across the frame, under the opening 24 and are secured at their ends to the inner wall of the side members of the frame. These braces serve as supports upon which the sewing machine head rests when placed within the opening in the table top. The edges of the top adjacent the opening are provided with seats 27.
When the sewing machine head is removed from the opening in the top, a cover 28 may be inserted into the opening. The cover 1S of substantially the same shape as the opening and is provided with shoulders 29 which rest upon the seats 27 in the top, to maintain the top of the cover flush with the upper face of the table top. The cover 28 is provided with a countersunk bracket 30 having a. raised portion 31 under which the operator can insert his finger to readily remove the cover from the top. 7
It will be noted that by inserting or removing the cover either an ordinary table having an unbroken surface, or a sewing table may be readily provided. The legs of the table are connected so that they can be readily folded to provide a compact structure when the table is not in use, and means for forming a rigid vibrationless support for the frame can readily be formed when the legs are extended.
Various changes can be made in the details of construction illustrated and described without departing from the spirit of my invention and the scope of the claims.
What I claim is:
1. In a convertible table, a top having an opening therethrough, the walls of the opening being out inwardly from the opening at intervals to form seats around the edges of the opening, and a freely removable cover adapted to be inserted within the opening in said top to provide an uninterrupted top surface, said cover having laterally extending supporting shoulders extending therefrom at intervals and arranged to extend into said seats formed in said top.
2. In a convertible. table, a top having an opening therethrough, the walls of the opening being cut inwardly from the opening at intervals to form sea s around the edges of the opening, and a freely removable cover adapted to be inserted within the opening in said top to provide an uninterrupted top surface, said cover having laterally extending supporting shoulders extending therefrom at intervals and arranged to extend into said seats formed in said top, and aicountersunk bracket secured within the top of said cover by which said cover may be lifted from the opening in the top. 3. In a table, a top having an opening therethrough and seats formed around the edges of the opening, and afreely removable cover for said opening, said cover being provided with laterally extending supporting shoulders for engagement with'said seats; when the cover is placed within the opening, said cover forming an uninterrupted surface with said table top when in position.
4. In a table, a top having arectangular opening therethrough and pockets formed around the edges of the opening, a freely removable cover for said opening said cover forming an uninterrupted surface with said top when in position, said cover having supporting shoulders adapted to rest in said pockets when the cover is placed within the opening of the top and cross braces near the ends of said rectangular opening and below the top thereof.
In witness whereof, I hereunto ailix my signature this 13 day of July, 1923.
HAROLD L. CHILDS.
