FORM FOR WEAVING BASKETS.
Application filed August 1, 1925. Serial No. 47,535.
Among the principal objects which the present invention has in view are To provide a novel collapsible basket weaving form; to provide a separable element form which may be removed from the finished work in sections; and generally to provide an improved weaving form for the manufacture of baskets having inturned overhanging sides.
Drawings.
Figure 1 is a top plan view of the assembled form;
Figure 2 is a section therethrough on the line 2-2 of Figure 1 illustrating a basketweaving applied thereover and the manner of removing the form.
Description. The invention is particularly intended for use in connection with the manufacture of lar forming block. The tops and bottoms of top the semielliptical side sections 10 are made flat as at 14; with the body of the sections intermediate the top and bottom being formed in rounded edge portions 15 shaped to the desired form of basket.
The central block 12 of the form is provided with a flat bottom 16 and a flat top 17 the surfaces of which are flush with'the flat and bottom surfaces of the side sections 10. The body portion of the block 12 between its top and bottom is rounded as at 18 to conform to the shape of the rounded portions of the side sections.
The top 17 of the center block 12 overhangs the bottom 16 and the inner edge 19 of the block terminates on an incline extend ing diagonally between the, top and bottom as illustrated in Figure 2. The block 13 is of counterpart formation with the block 12, its relative position being reversed so that it carries a relatively small top 20 and a relatively large bottom 21 between which eX- t-end the inner edge inclined face 22 adapted when the blocks are in position to engage under the inclined face 19 of the inner edge of the block 12. The block 12 carries at approximately the center of its top surfaces a recess 23 formed therein to provide a finger socket whereby the block 12 may be moved on the block 13 in the manner shown in dotted lines in Figure 2.
In the initial assembly of the separable sections of the form, the side sections 10 and interposed center blocks 12 and 13 are held in assembled relation by means of a pair of attaching pins 24 passed through transverse apertures formed in the side sections and central blocks adjacent the lower portions thereof whereby the sections are held in temporary assembled relation.
In weaving a basket upon the form the base matting 25 is first woven and applied over the bottom of the assembled form. A disk 26 of suitable material and of the same area as the flat bottom of the assembled form is then applied over the base matting and secured to the form sections by means of the fastening tacks 27. A similar disk 28 is then applied over the top of the form and secured to the sections by means of the fastening tacks 29. As the function of the disks 26 and 28 is to hold the form sections in assembled position during weaving, the anchor pins 24 are Withdrawn from their engagement between the form sections and the weaving of the basket is proceeded with carrying the material 30 up around the rounded, side portions of the form block to the finished inturned overhanging top 31. When the weaving is completed the disks 26 and 28 are removed from the form and an operator by inserting a finger in the recess I 23 of the central block 12 may withdraw the block diagonally through the top of the basket over the inclined face 22 of the block 13. The block 13 may then be moved inwardly between the side sections 10 for withdrawal through the top of the basket and subsequently the side sections. 10 may be moved inwardly for removal from the interior of the completed basket.
