My invention relates to improvements in coupling connections for pump rods, and it consists in the combinations, constructions and arrangements herein described and claimed.
An object of the invention is to provide a connection which is adapted to be attached to the upper end of a pump or sucker rod and which then is adapted to be releasably secured to a vertically reciprocablepart of the windmill, whereby the pump or sucker rod can be operatively connected-with the driving mechanism of the windmill.
A further object of the invention is to provide a coupling connection of the character described which can be secured to a driving part of eitherawindmill or a pumping jack quickly and easily without the use of any special tools or .unusual skill with but little time and labor and as quickly and easily detached from the driving part of the windmill or pumping jack.
, A further object of the invention is to provide a coupling connection of the character described which comprises elements engaged adjustably with each other so that the effective length of the pump rod can be varied. I 1
Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description, considered in conjuction with the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l isa fragmentary view, partly in vertical section and partly in side elevation, showing the coupling connection attached to the upper end of a pump rod and connecting the pump rod with the vertically reciprocable part of the driving mechanism of a windmill,
Figure 2 is a side elevation of the coupling connection and the associated parts at the opposite ends of the coupling connection, the View being taken at right angles to Figure 1,
Figure 3 is a fragmentary detail view, partly in side elevation and partly in vertical section, showing the manner of attach ing separable elements of the connection together,
Figure 4 is a side elevation, showing the upper coupling member of the connection connected with a vertically reeiprocable part of the windmill driving mechanism,
Figure 5 is a perspective view showing a portion of the structure exhibited in Figure 4, and
Figure 6 is a perspective view of the ring for releasably holding the jaws of the structure shown in Figure 4 closed.
Referring now to thedrawings and particularly to Figure 1 thereof, the numeral 1 designates the upper end portion of a well casing and 2 is the. upper end portion of a pump or sucker rod which is vertically reciprocabl-e in the well casing. A coupling connection embodying the invention coinprises a rod 3 which is provided with screw threads extending from the upper end thereof for the greater part of its length as indicated at A and is connected by a union 5 to the pump or sucker rod 2, being held rigid with the pump or sucker rod in axial alignment with the latter and constituting what may be considered the upper end portion of the pump or sucker red. A thimble 6 surrounding the rod 3 is joined integrally or otherwise to a flanged adjusting nut 7 which is'in engagement with the threads 4:. The thimble 6 will be moved vertically of the rod 3 whenvthe nut 7 is turned in engagement with the threads 4. The thimble'tS is at the lower end of the nut 7 and the flange on the nut 7, indicated at 8, is at the upper end of the thimbleQ A 1' am nut 9 in engagement with the threads l of the rod. 3 below the thimble 6 has a flange 10 at its upper end which will be positioned at the lower end of the thimble when the nut 9 has been turned until tight against the thimble 6. Obviously, the flanges 8 and 10, may be washers which were formed separately from the nut and associated with the latter.
A second jamnut 11 is in engagement with the threaded portion of the rod 3 above the nut 7 and has a flange 12 at its upper end. The nut 11 iscounterbored at its upper end as shown at 13 in Figure 3, the counterbore opening through the upper face of the flange 12 and increasing in cross sectional area from its bottom toward its upper end. A jam nut 14 is in engagement with the threadedportion or the rod 3 above the nut 11 andis joined integrally or otherwise at its lower end to a thimble or sleeve 15 which surroundsthe rod 3. i The sleeve orthimble 15 is best seen in Figure 1. A gripping device shown to advantage in Figures 1, 2 and 4 comprises a pair of arms 16 and 17 respectively pivotally connected together at their upper ends, as at 18 and having inwardly turned portions at their lower ends constituting to operating jaws indicated at 16? and 17. The jaws l6 'and 17 have vertical grooves in the confronting faces thereof as indi cated at 19 in Figure 41 which'are curved transversely to conform to the curvature of the thimble 15, whereby the arms 16 and 17 may be swung from the position illustrated in Figure 4 until the thii'n'ble-15is partially received in each of the grooves 19 and is embraced by the jaws 16 and 17*. A retaining ring 20 may be slid downwardly on the arms 16 and 17 from the position shown in Figure 4 to the position shown in Figure 1 and will hold the arms against swinging apart at their lower ends, whereby the jaws 16 and 17 willbe held in embracingrelation to the thirnble and the arms 16 and 17 then will be held against lateral movement relatively to the rod 3. The j awe 16 and 17 have 'reduced tapering lower end portions adapted to enter the counterbore 13 of the jam nut '11 when the la'tter has been turned on the threaded portion of the rod to position to clamp the jaws 16 and 17 against the thumb nut 14. The arms 16 and 17 thus will be held against longitudinal move'ment relatively to the rod and'will be substantially rigid with the rod.
The arm 16'is provided withan offset axial extension 21 at its upper end which is of rod-like formation and willfbe disposed in axial alignment with the rod 8 when the jaws 16 and 17 have'been secured in embracing relation to the thimble 15 in themanne-r described. Therod-like extension 21 is joined by means of a coupling'22 or in any other suitable known manner to a connecting member 23 which may have forks 2 1 at its upper end adapted to straddle the lower'end of a windmill pump pole or like vertically reciprocablje part of the driving mechanism of a windmill. The member 23 in actual practice is connected more or less "permanently to the vertically reciprocable part of the windmill driving mechanism and forthe purpose of the disclosure of this invention may be termed a part of the "driving mecha nism of the windmill, since the member 23f forms no part of the coupling connection which my invention provides and the rod extension 21 may be secured to any suitable vertically rreciprocabl-e part of the driving mechanism of a windmill through the agency of any suitable emin cung meaiber. \Vith the pump or sucker rod 2 connected with vertically reciprocating part of the driving mechanism of a windmill, the pump or sucker rod 2 willbereciprocated vertically. In order to detach the reciprocating part'of thedriving'mechanism of the windmill from the rod 3 and thus to-disconne'c't the driving mechanismof the windmill from the pump or sucker rod 2., it only is necessary to slide thefring 2O upward o'njthe arms 16 and 17 and to loosen the jam nut11slightly so that the -ar ms16 and 17 may be swung apart until the thimble'1'5 nolonger is gripped'b'etween the jaws 16 and 17 The ring may be releasably held adjacent to the upper ends of the arms 16 and 17 through the agency'oi a spring latchingarm 25 which is disposed between the arms 16 and 17 and is connected atitslower end to'the arm 16, the upper end portion of the latching member being bent laterally as indicated at 26 for engagement with 'the -ring 20 when the latter has been moved upward-along the arms 16 and '17 to the position shown in Figure 4.
Obviously, my invention is susceptible of embodiment in forms other than that illustrated in the accompanying drawings and I therefore consider as my own all such modifications and adaptations of the form of the device hereindescribed as fairly fall withinjthe scope of the appended claims.
I claim 1. A coupling attachment for a pump rod having a screw threaded upper end portion', comprising a sleeve surrounding the threaded portion of said extension, a nut at the upper end of said sleeve in engage ment with the'threaded extension'and connectedwith said sleeve, a second nut engageable with the threaded extension below said sleeve, said last namednut having a recess in the upper face thereof adapted to surroundsaid extension, a pair of pivo'tally connected arms having jaws at the free ends thereof for-cooperating with each other to grip said'sleev'e between said nuts, one of said arms having an extension attachable to a vertically reciprocating part of the driving mechanism of a windmill, and means engageable with said arms for relea'sably holding said jaws in 'engagemei'it with said sleeve.
2.
