\VALTER N. VANCE, 015 CHICAGO HEIGHTS, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO BIT-HAND STEEL LOCKER COMPANY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION OF ILLINOIS.
ocKnn' noon.
Application filed August 12, 1922. Serial No. 581,389.
My invention relates to lockers of the steel. or sheet metal variety, and more particularly to an improved door and locking mechanism therefor.
A. principal object of the invention is the provision in a structure of this character of. an improved mounting for locking bar adapted to slide lengthwise on the door to move into andfrom looking position.
A'furrher object of the invention is the provision of means for automatically moving: the locking bar into lockingposition uponthe closing of: the door and. for automatically moving it from such position. by a mere pull on the handle which protrudes from thefront of the door.
Other objects and advantages of the invention. will be. apparent as it is betterunderstood from the following description, which, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, discloses a preferred embodiment thereof.
Referring to the drawings:
Figure l is a perspective view of the locker in which my invention is embodied;
Fig. 2. is a sectional view looking toward the front from the interior of the locker;
Fig. 3 is an enlarged sectional view of the locking portion of the door with the locking bar in its down, or locked position;
is a similar view of the locking bar elevated to disengage the same from the locking member onv the frame;
Fig; 5 .is a detail View of the locking elements which are mountedv respectively on the frame and the door;
Fig. dis a detailperspective of the flanged portion oi the door, showing the manner inwhich the headed projection is formed;
Fig. 7 is a similar view, showing the locking bar in assembled relationship; and
Fig. 8 is a detail sectional View taken substantially on the line 88 in Fig. 3.
Upon the drawings, I have shown, for the purpose of illustration, a locker body 11, which, as shown may include a series of lockers with partitions therebetween, each of said lockers being provided with a door 12, which is hinged at 13 upon the front side of a frame 20, the latter being supported upon legs or corner angles 14:, or in any desired manner. Attached to the inner side of the frame, opposite the side upon which the door is hinged, are looking l gs 15, which a e fi edly seemed y ts 16 and wiich are'formed to provide a hook part 17 into which the flange 18 of the door may extend. The portion of the hook extending toward the door is provided. with a notch 19 and the edge therebeyond is beveled, as indicated at 21, to permit automatic locking action, as will be hereinafter described.
Upon the door flange 18 is. mounted a sliding locking bar 22, which is provided with offset portions 23, in which are providedlocking parts 24, adapted to enter the: notches 19v to hold the door in closed position when saidbar is locked, against endwise movement. It will: be. evident that the mere closing of the door will cause the part 24; to ride. up the; beveled edge 21 of the locking lug and enter. the notch 19, so that the bar may be: brought to: locking position by merely closing the door with slight force- In the: flange 18 of the door, there are provided a desired number of headed projections 25, which are formed by merely cutting. out and pressing inwardly a portion of said flange. The'proiection thereby provid'edconsists of the headed portion 25 and shank parts 23 forming a bearing and guide for the bar. At spaced intervals in thebar are slots 27,,which are formed with: an enlarged portion 28, the latter being of suflicient area topermit insertion of-the head 25 and the remainder of the slots being of merely sufficient size to permit the bar to slide upon the shanks 26 with the heads 25 engaging the opposite side of' said bar. This construction, it; will be seen,, permits ready assembly of the locking bar upon the door and removal therefrom when brought to proper position, and, at the same time, firinly secures it 1n place so that it cannot be removed during normal action and without the removal of a handle to be now described.
A handle 29 is secured to the bar 22 by screws 31, extending through an apertured extension 32 of the handle which passes through a'slot 38 in the door. The bar at the point of its attachment to the. extension 32 is provided with a projection 30, which extends into the aperture of said extension and behind said projection is a recess 30 in which lies the point of the screw 31. On the lower end of the handle 29 is a cam and locking Pfii Bl, n which is an aperture 35.
ISO
Upon the door is provided a socket 36, of general configuration corresponding to that of the part 3% on the handle and this socket part is provided with an aperture 37. It
will be manifest that whenjthe handle is in handle 29 will cause the cam surface 38 to ride upon the inner parts of the socket mem ber 36, thereby automaticallylifting the bar 22 from locking position .and allowing the door to he opened.
It is thought that the invention and many of its attendant advantages will be understood from the foregoing description, and it will be apparent that various changes may be made in the form, construction and arrangement ofthe parts without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention r sacrificing all of its material advantages, the form hereinbefore described being merely a preferred embodiment thereof.
I claim: I I
1. A locker comprising a frame, a notched locking lug attached to said frame and having a beveled edge beyond the notch therein, a door, a slidable locking bar mounted on said door and having a locking portion adapted to ride up said beveled edge on said locking lug and enter the notch therein when the door is closed, a handle secured to said locking bar and adapted to be locked to a fixed portion of the door, and a cam on. the lower part of said handle adapted to ride upon said fixedportion of the door when the handle is pulled outwardly, to automatically lift the locking bar and open the door.
2. A locker comprising a frame havlng a beveled locking catch thereon, a doorhinged to said frame, a locking bar slidably mounted on said door and having a locking part adapted to automatically engage said beveled catch when the door is closed, and a handle secured to said locking bar and extending exteriorly of the door, said handle having acam action upon the oor to lift the bar when an outward pull is exerted thereon.
3. A locker door comprising a body, a locking bar slidably mounted on said door, said door having a headed projection struck inwardly therefrom and said bar being provided with a slothaving portions of different dimension whereby the headed projection may enter through a portion thereof and retain the bar when engaged behind the smaller portion of said slot, and a handle having a portion adapted to be locked to the door and having a cam. action upon the door to lift the bar from locking position when an outward pull is exerted upon said'handle.
A locker, comprising, a frame, a notched locking lug attached to said frame and having a beveled edge beyond the notch therein, a door, a slidable locking bar mounted on said doorand having a locking portionadapted to ride up said beveled edge on said locking lug and enter the notch therein when the door is closed, said door being formed to provide a headed projection and said locking bar having a slot therein, a portion of said slot being enlarged to permit insertion of'said headed projection and the remainder being of less width than the headed portionrof said projection.
5. A locker, comprising, a'frame, a door hinged thereon, alocking catch attached to said frame and having a beveled edge extending toward the door, a locking'm em'ber slidably mounted upon said door and having an offset adapted to automatically ride upon said beveled edge and enter said notch when the door is forcibly closed, said looking member being provided with a slot comprising portions or" differentcross-sectional dimension, and said door being formed to provide with a headed projection adapted to pass through the large portion of said slot and to engage the bar adjacent the small portion thereof.
