Contact members are also mounted on the cylindrical body of the tool for rotation upon axes parallel to the axis of the tool, said contact members comprising elongated rollers 1 f journaled in the annular recess 7, with their outer sides projecting sligl'itly beyond the body of the tool. The rollers 14 preferably taper to a slightly reduced diameter toward their forward ends, and bear against the base of annular recess 'Z-which is correspondingly tapered so as to form a bearing surface throughout its length.
The rollers are held against radial displacement by pins 15 extending through axial bores 16 of said rollers the ends of said pins being received in bearing apertures 17 which extend through shoulders 5 and 6. The bearing apertures extend all the way through said shoulders. and the upper ends of the apertures in shoulder 5 at the rear end of the tool, are of reduced diameter so as to form end abutments 18 for preventing axial displacement of pins 15 in one direction. The pins are held against axial displacement in the opposite direction by abutment of nose 8 against the shoulder 6, a construction which permits of ready removal and replacement of the pins and rollers by disconnecting the nose 8 from the body portion of the tool, so that pins 15 may be witl'idrawn through the apertures 17 in the shoulder (3, ,Vhen the pins are to be thus withdrawn. they may be readily dislodged by a suitable tool inserted in the open end'sof the apertures 1? which extend through shoulder Washers 19 are preferably mounted on pins 15- between the ends of the rollers and the adjacent surfaces of shoulders 5 and 6, and the rollers are loosely mounted on pins 1.5 so as to bear directly against the base of recess 7. By this construction the rollers are free to rotate and pins 15 are relieved of any strain.
Contact members rotatable in any plane are also mounted on the tapering surface l of the tool. said members comprising balls 11 projecting slightly beyond surface 4: and journaled in corresponding bearing recesses 12 as explained in connection with balls 11 and 11 By the construction as thus described it will be seen that when the tool is rotated and gradually forced downwardly between the collapsed walls of a casing, the balls 11 and 11 will engage the restricted portion of the casing, and due to the taper of nose 8, will gradually expand said Walls; and the rollers '14 will then'engage the expanded walls, and by; continued -rotation of the tool as it is forced downwardly, the rollers will reshape the walls of the casing to their original cylindrical contour. When the tool is subse quently withdrawn, the balls 11 of tapering surface 4 will engage any restriction which may form in the casing above the tool, so as to expand said casing and thus permit the free removal of the tool.
The ends of rollers 14 are preferably curved as shown at 20 so as to provide agradual transition from the contact surface of either nose 8 or taper 4 to the contact surface of rollers 14, in order to prevent end abutment of said rollers against any restriction formed by the collapsed casing walls. The tool will thus be continuous in its operation and will be free of any tendency to stick or bind as it is withdrawn or inserted.
In order to lubricate the surface of the collapsed casing which is engaged by the contact means of theexpanding member, an axial bore 21 extends through shank 1 so as to communicate with the bore of the drillpipe upon which the tool is mounted, and a suitable lubricant is forced downwardly through the drill pipe and into bore 21. The bore 21 is adapted for discharge of the lubricant adjacent the contact means of the tool, and as an'instance of this arrangement bore 21. terminates above the annular recess 7, and branch bores 22 extend therefrom and open through the tool at the upper end of recess 7 opposite the respective rollers 1 1. The lubricant may thus be discharged from the tool throughout operation thereof.
The tool may be made in various sizes for use in connection with casing of different diameters, and the tools of each size are adapted for small. variation in the diameter of the circle described by the contact surfaces of rollers 14-, in order to adapt the tool to differences in internal diameter of casings of the same size, as is caused by the use of easing material of different thicknesses.
For this purpose bearing apertures 17 are formed through shoulders 5 and 6 of the tool, in radially spaced relation beyond apertures 17 and in circumferentially spaced relation between said apertures. The rollers 14 may thus be replaced by rollers 14 of slightly greater diameter as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3, the pins 15 on which said larger rollers are mounted being received in the apertures 17*, so that said rollers will bear against the base of annular recess 7 and will form a contact surface of slightly increased diameter.
