DOUBLE-DRUM HOIST.
Application filed October 10, 1925.
This invention relates to hoists, Abut more 'particularly to a hoist ofthe double drum type in which either of thedrurns may be driven from a common driving element.
The objects of the invention are to obtain a constant and uniform braking effect on 'the drums in order to prevent free rotation thereof after the drums have been disconnected from the driving element, to enable the braking mechanism to be readily adjusted and to render the braking element readily accessible for the purpose of inspection and renewal of parts.
Other objects will be in part obvious and in part pointed out hereinafter.
The invention consists of the combinations of elements, features of construction, and arrangement of parts having the general mode of operation substantially as hereinafter described and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims and illustrated in the accompanying drawings. in Which- Figure l is an elevation partly in section of a hoist constructed in accordance with the practice of the invention,
Figure 2 is a transverse view partly in section taken through Figure 1 on the line 2-2 looking in the direction of the arrows, and
Figure 3 is a perspective view of the paWls illustrating the manner in which said paWls are held against relative rotation.
Referring to the drawings, A indicates a base plate which supports at its ends fra-mes B and C. The frames B and C may be secured to the base plate A in any suitable manner and are connected lrigidly at their tops by a tie-rod D which is threaded at its ends to receive suitable nuts E.
Formed integrally With the frame C is a box F which forms a mounting for a motor G. rlhe motor G is in this instance of the square cylinder type in which one biston is adapted to reciprocate Within another piston. Accordingly a piston H reciprocates transversely Within a cylinder J and a second piston K is arranged to reciprocate y vertically Within the piston H. In this Way the combined movements of the pistons H and K are resolved into a rotary movement for rotating a driving shaft L which in this instance is connected to the piston K by means" of a ,crank pinO. Since theimotor 'illustrated in the" drawings forms nopart of pre'sentinveiition and its construction Serial No. 61,636.
and operation are Well understood, further description thereof is considered unnecessary, and it is to be .understood that any suitable reversible motor of compact type may be used for rotating the main driving shaft L.
ln the present instance, the main vdriving shaft L is supported at one end by the frame C and extending longitudinally through the hoist is supported at its other end by the frame B. Encircling the driving shaft L is a center bearing P also supported by the frames B and C and which forms a support for a haulage drum Q. and a tail rope drum R mounted side by side and adapted to roL tate upon the center bearing P. On adjacent sides of the drums Q and R are formed flanges S and T respectively which carry drum drivers U and V. The drum drivers U and V are in the form of teeth having op posed engaging faces, and, if desired, may be formed separately and 'secured to the flanges S and T in any convenient manner.
Arranged rotatably on the center bearing P and between the drums Q and R is a main driver N preferably in the form of a spur gear which meshes With a pinion X keyed to a counter shaft Y. The counter shaft Y in this instance is provided With anti-friction bearings Y and Y2 supported by the frames B and C respectively and projects at one end'into a gear casing Z preferably formed integrally with the frame B. A cover B Which may be secured firmly to the frame C in any suitable manner serves to hold the bearing Y2 in the frame B and forms a pocket or reservoir for oil or other lubricant for the bearing Y2. A gear ZJ is keyed to the shaft Y to mesh with an intermediate pinion c formed integrally with a shaft d and supported at one end by the frame B and at .its other end by a plate e which forms a cover for the gear casingA Z. Keyed to the shaft cl adjacent the pinion c is an intermediate gear f which meshes with a driving pinion g keyed to the main driving shaft L.
A boss L is formed on the main vdriver W and is bored to receive a bushing j having an inwardly extending iiange intermediate its ends. Disposed Within the bushing j are a pair of pawls o and p having trunnions g and r Which extend rotatably into the bushing j and thus provide "pivotslfor said pa'wls.- @latch members s Vpreferably)of seinifoireular shape, are formed on the trunnions g and r to interlock with each other when the pawls are in their normal position so that the paWie o and pxvili be simultaneously rocked about their pivot. The' portions comprising the clutch members s are in this insta noe oi smaller diameter than the trunnions g and r thus forming` shoulders u,
which, When the pawls are" in their proper position in the busiiingj, will abut the tiange vv/12 and thus preyentthe trunnions :troni slidinglongitudinally Withinthe bushing f,i.A z ,The paivlsoand p in this instance areidentieaiiy alike so that if one ofthe pawls is subjected to harder usage than the otherrpaivl, as is frequently the case, the pawls may be interohanged, e v
