UNITED STATES PAEEE @FFIGE.
FANNY M. FOSTER, OF LEICESTER, MASSACHUSETTS, EXEGUTRIX OF GEORGE P. FOSTER, DECEASED.
IMPROVEMENT IN SOLE AND HEEL SHAVES FQR BOQTS AND SHQES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 159,312., dated February 2, 1875; application filed November 30, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that GEORGE P. Fos'rER, of Leicester, Worcester county, Massachusetts, invented a new and useful Improvement in Sole and Heel Shave for Boots and Shoes, of which the following is a specification:
The invention will first be fully described, and then pointed out in the claims.
Figure 1 is a top view of the improved article. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of Fig. 1, taken on the line w 00; and Fig. 3 is a cross-section of Fig. 2, taken on the line 3 3 Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A represents the stock. 13 is the knife or cutter. G is the lever. The body of the knife is slightly curved, and its side edges D D are dovetailedinto the stock, as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 1. E is the fulcrum of the lever O. F is a screw which passes through the stock, with its end bearing on the long end of the lever, and exerting a lever-purchase to force the short end against the beveled or dovetailed side of the knife, as seen at G. By means of this lever the knife is forced down into the dovetail, kept firm, and prevented from chattering when in use. The lever also prevents the knife from getting loose or starting out.
By lowering the screw F the knife may be slipped from the dovetails and taken out for sharpening and other purposes.
As the knife wears away in grinding it may be shoved up toward the detachable piece H, and kept in its proper cutting position at all times.
This tool is intended for shaving off the heels of boots and shoes in the process of manufacturing them. Some similar tool for this purpose is used in all manufactories of boots and shoes.
By this invention the objections to the tools now in use are obviated.
The machine is adapted for shaving the soles as well as the heels of boots and shoes.
Having thus described the invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. In combination with arcmovable knife or cutter for shaving the heels and soles of boots and shoes, the lever O, substantially as and for the purposes described.
2. The screw F, in combination with the lever 0 and knife H, for the purposes described. FANN Y M. FOSTER,
Exeeutm'x of the will of George 1. Foster, deceased. Witnesses:
GEo. A. CRAIG, EDWARD F. EDDY.
