This invention relates` to shuttle placers for looms and more particularly to that style oi' placer which is actuated by direct contact with a misplaced shuttle.
In my co-pending application, Serial No. 741,034 I have shown a .type of shuttle placer comprising Aa roll positioned to engage a inisplaced shuttle and movable laterally by .a slightly misplaced shuttle yto locking position. The `mechanisni set forth the-rein provides a fixed nnyieldng stop for .the shuttle placer when .the saine has been moved laterally and I have Jfound that under certain conditions Ythis construction results in a harsh and abrupt action. This is especially true with certain shapes .of shnttles when the binder Apressune is excessive.
It is the principal object of my present intention yto provide a shuttle placer normally yieldable `against relatively light `pres- Vsure but movable laterally into ,operative relationship with a slide yieldable under relatively high .pressures when engaged by a slightly misplaced shuttle. Y j
A further object of my invention is vto provide a shuttle placer'and a sliding carrier therefor which shall be given a normal `reanvard movement .toward ,the shuttle and also a lateral movement to hold xthe sanne in normal position ,by a single resilient means.

Shipper handle 14 is normally retainedin notch 13 when the loom is running. Lying` immediately in front of the shipper 'handle is arm 15 of'lever 16 pivoted to the stand as at 17. The other arm 18 of the lever 16 is formed with a barrel l19 in which slidably mounted a plunger 20 pressed Ynormally to the right as seen in Fig. 1 by spring 21' and limited in its motion by TCotter 22. f
A stang` ,2S is bolted or otherwise secnred to Ythe breast beam and has a guide 24 thereon for the side filling stop motion slide 25, the forward end of which is operatively positioned to engage the barrel 19 .and swing the lever 16 about the center thereof to stop the loom when a fault in the filling occurs. Upstanding from the stand 23 on the rear side thereot is a boss 26 having a threaded bore which receives the threaded head 28 of a stud 2,9 and the forward .end `of saidV stand has formed integrally therewith a second boss 30 which is drilled to receive the forward reduced shanlr'l of the stud Q9. Slet -screw 32 is provided to hold any adjusted setting of the head 28 with respect -to the stand. Surrounding the shanl131 la heavy -coil spring S3 the forward end of which pushes against boss 30 and-the rear end of whielgi `forces arm 34 ott slide '35 against the head 28. rllhe forward end of slide 35 isi :preferably so proportioned as to have sliding contact with the right hand side of the bossBO.
Formed integral with the stand 23 is a wall 36 which together with slide 35 forms a guideway in which is located a slidingcarrier 37 ypositioned fior engagement with the plunger 2O when moved' forwardly. Said carrier 37 has pivot/ally mounted on the rear end thereof a head 38 on which is rotatably `vmounted the shuttle placerroll 39; The body of the carrier may be hollow and the rear end thereotis provided with a pocket 40 which receives one end of a guide rod 41. The `forward end of said rod passes loosely th'roiligh ,a guide bearing)` 4 2 formed on the stand 25h and' also passes through the front wall of the carrier', being` held in fixed position with respect to the carrier by means ot set screw 43. A lightcoil *spring 44 sur rounding the 4rod 41 is rlocated .between the boss 42 and the rear portion ofthe carrier 37 and serves to hold the carrier and placer roll normally in rear position. A stop lug 45 extends laterally from the carrier 3i' and is positioned for engagement with the front portion of wall 36.
One of the vertical walls of the carrier 37 is provided with a notch 46 which und-er normal conditions is out of alignment with the rear end of slide 35. As shown herein the inner faces of slide 35 and the wall 36 are slightly oblique, being somewhat farther apart at their rear ends than at their forward ends. The forward end of these walls serves as a guide for the front end of carri-er 3T, the carrier being movable angularly about the boss 42 so that the rear end of carrier 37 may be moved laterally from its normal position in contact with wall 36 to engaging position with movable wall 35. The lug 45 is out of line with the rod 41 and spring 44 serves normally to hold the car'- rier in the position shown in Fig. l with the notch 46 out of alignment with the slide A cover 4T may be provided to restrain upward movement of the carrier 3i'.
Under normal conditions the heavy spring 33 will hold the arm 34 against the head 28 and thus place the slide 35 in rearmost position and light spring 44 will hold the lug 45 against the wall 36 so that the carrier 37 will lie against said wall 36. Roll 39 under these conditions will be so placed as to be out of contact with shuttle S when properly placed but should said roll engage a widely misplaced shuttle as indicated in Fig. 2 the roll and carrier therefor will move forwardly against the light pressure of spring 44 and swing lever 16 about the pivot thereof to stop the loom. However, if the roll 39 should engage the rounded end of a slightly misplaced shuttle as indicated in Fig. 3 it will roll along said rounded surface and move the carrier 37 laterally until the same is in contact with the slide 35 and notch 46 is in line with the slide If the shuttle does not stick and can be placed without excessive pressure the notch 46 will engage the rear end of slide 35 and the placer and carrier will be held against further forward motion, the roll 39 rotating on its center and pushing the shuttle into its box. Should the shuttle stick in the box or for any other reason resist placing the spring 33 will yield and the carrier 3T will move forwardly to engage the plunger and stop the loom.
Thus it will be seen that the carrier is movable forwardly from either of its lateral positions to stop the loom. By means of screw head 28 the relative position of slide with respect to the notch 46 may be changed as desired.
From the foregoing it will be seen that I have provided a shuttle placer actuable by a misplaced shuttle and so arranged as to assume one or the other of two lateral positions from either of which it can move to stop the loom. Also, the placer is called upon to act against two springs of different strengths one of which is relatively light to permit forward movement of the placer when the latter is opposite a widely misplaced shuttle and the other of which is relatively strong to require the placer to move the shuttle under ordinary conditions but which will yield to stop the loom when rcsistance of the shuttle is abnormal. Furthermore, it will be seen that the single light spring 44 suiiices to move the carrier 37 against the wall 36 through the engagement of the lug 45 with said wall 36.
Having thus described my invention it will be apparent that changes and modifications inay be made therein by those skilled in the art without departing Vfrom the spirit and scope ofthe invention, and I do not wish to be limited to the details herein disclosed, but what I claim is: i
l. In a loom, a shuttle placer, means to offer relatively weak yielding resistance to the movement of the placer when the latter engages a widely misplaced shuttle, and means to offer relatively heavy yielding rcsistance to said shuttle placer when the latter engages a slightly misplaced shuttle.
2. In a loom, a shuttle placer, two independent means each effective to offer yielding resistance to the placer, said placer being resisted by one of said means when engaging a widely misplaced shuttle and by both of said means when engaging a slightly misplaced shuttle.
3. In a loom, a shuttle placer, a carrier therefor, a guide for the carrier, and two resilient devices of different strengths, the carrier normally being in position to be moved against oneof said resilient devices and beingmovable into position to be resisted by both of said devices when engaged by a misplaced shuttle.
4. In a loom, a shuttle placer movable laterally when engaged by a slightly misplaced shuttle, a carrier therefor, a relatively light spring normally resisting forward movement of the carrier, a relatively heavy spring, and means to establish connections between the carrier and said heavy spring when the carrier is moved laterally by engagement of the placer with a slightly misplaced shuttle.
5. In a loom, a shuttle placer, a carrier therefor, a spring holding said carrier and placer in normal position, a resilient device located adjacent to but out of the path of the carrier when the latter is moved by a widely misplaced shuttle, and means formed on said carrier and resilient device to be interengaged and effective to resist forward motion of the carrier by said resilient means lll() llO When said carrier is engaged by a slightly misplaced shuttle. 6. In a loom, a shuttle placer movable laterally by a slightly misplaced shuttle, al carrier therefor, guiding Walls for said carrier, means to hold said carrier normally and yieldingly in position to be moved relatively to said Walls when engaged by a Widely misplaced shuttle, one of said Walls being yieldingly mounted to move with the carrier, and means on the carrier movable into engagement With the movable Wall When the carrier is moved laterally by a misplaced shuttle to cause said carrier to be opposed by the action of said Wall When the placer is moved laterally.
7. In a loom, a shuttle placer movable laterally by engagement with a slightly misplaced shuttle, spaced Walls to guide said placer, one of said Walls being fixed and the other Wall being movable against relatively heavy pressure, and means to hold said placer normally against the ixed Wall, the placer being movable against the action of said means into position to engage the movable Wall When moved laterally by a slightly misplaced shuttle.
8. In a loom, a shuttle placer movable laterally by and receiving a shuttle placing movement from a misplaced shuttle, a carrier for said placer, guiding Walls for said carrier, one of said Walls being fixed and the other being movable, relatively light yielding means to hold said carrier in rear position and against said fixed Wall, relatively heavy yieldingmeans to resist movement of said movable Wall, and means to establish connection between said carrier and the movable Wall when the shuttle placer engages a misplaced shuttle and is moved laterally thereby.
9. In a loom, a shuttle placer normally at rest and having shuttle placing movement when engaged by a slightly misplaced shuttle, guiding Walls for said placer, means to yieldingly mount one of said Walls for forward movement, and interengaging means between said vvall and the placer, said placer being movable forwardly when engaged by a Widely misplaced shuttle Without establishing connection With said ivall and being movable laterally when engaged by a slightly misplaced shuttle to establish connection with said movable Wall.
