Description
June 22 1926. 1,590,095 A. J. HOFFMAN y GROMMET SETTING nEvIcE Filed Nov. 17, 1925 2 I maf; I
,i2 Alaya l auoz ne w faces thereof are curved upon themselves as indicated at 8, these curved surfaces being disposed inwardly upon their respective dogs with regard to the bed block 4.
A substantially oval shaped opening 9 is formed between and approximately concentrically of the bed block 4 and serves to permit of the punehingof an openingV in the material receiving the fastener or grommet, in a manner hereinafter more fully described, during` that time when the several portions of said grommet or fastener are.
being assembled and interconnected.
A cover plate 1() is provided the circular bed block 4 and, will be noted, is formed with a peripheral flange 11, of such size and shapeV as to snugly engage over the upper portion of such circular bed block 4 in the manner as shown in the drawings, whereupon fastening screws or similar devices 12 are passed through screw threaded openings formed therein and into'binding engagement with adjacent portions of the peripheral surface of bed` block A4, hence, connecting the top or cover 1() thereto and preventing movement of the same. In this way, it is manifest that the bed block 4 and its cap or cover 10 will be secured in assembled relation.
The cap or cover 10 is formed with a substantially oval shaped opening 13 of size and shape corresponding to the washer of the type of grommet to be` assembled and fastened thereupon, thus, permitting of the placementof such a washer as indicated by the numeral 14 ,upon the bed block 4in va position Vwhereat the opening therein will be properly positioned with relation to the aforesaid oval opening 9 and likewise, that said washer 14will be so retained during the assembling, punchin and connecting' of the prongs of the body portion of the grommet or fastener over or with said washer 14.
In order that the dished `or inwardly curved exposed faces of the various' dogs 6 may properly perform their deflecting functions with engagement of the free ext-remities of the prongs of the body portion of the grommet therewith, pockets or recesses 15 are cut or otherwise formed in the cap or cover 10 about the oval opening 13 and in a manner to correspond to the arrangement of the pockets 5 and their respective dogs 6 upon the bed block 4.V In this way, it is obvious that the inwardly curved or dished exposed surfaces of the said dogs 6 will be in position to be properly engaged by the free extremities of the prongs upon the body portion of the grommet at all times, one of these body portions being shown in the accompanying drawings for convenience. and designated at Vthis time by the numeral. 16;
it being noted that such body portion is provided with angularly extending marginal fastening prongs 17 adapted to pierce the fabric receiving the device and to be then flexed or bent over the same and the washer 14 for effecting a clamp-like assemblage of the device upon such receiving material- It is desirable that the dogs 6 withy their curved lor dished exposed surfaces 8 shall be adjustably secured in position with respect to the bed block 4 and the cover 10 and to this end, I engage in suitably screw threaded openings formed in the peripheral flange 11 of saidcap 10a plurality of adjusting screws 18, the inner extremities of the Shanks thereof being adapted to have binding engagement with the adjacent outer ends of the corresponding dogs 6. Hence, because of the snug slidable engagement of these dogs in their particular pockets 5, it will be appreciated that the same may be adjusted vertically or angularly therein.` following which, their particular adjusting screws are engaged with the same and the dogs, accordingly, firmly secured lin their properly adjusted positions.
The upper die is of the s'o-called anvilv type, comprising a body portion 19, substantially oval rin configuration and corresponding, somewhat, to the general configuration o-f the body' portion 16 ofthe grommet to be assembled and fastened thereby. This body portion may be and preferside of said body portion and about the at` taching shank 3.
The attaching shank 3,. aforesaid, is
snugly but removably received through an opening formed concentrically of the oval-y shapedbody portion 19 of the upperdie 2 and carries a head-like oval portion 21 upon the lower end thereof, suchportiorr constituting the punch or fabric cutting portion of the invention. 'In this connection, it will be noted that the punch 21 of a configuration corresponding to that of the oval opening 9 and furthermore, that the same is of a'sizev such'V as to permit of snug engagement and passage through such oval opening 9. Therefore, with downward,movement of the upper die 2 in the operating machine, the punch 21 will enter the oval opening-'9 and in so doing, will pass through the material receiving the grommet, thereby punch'- ing an oval shaped opening in the same, corresponding to Vthe oval opening formed in' tha-body portion V16and the fastener .ring
oftheovalbody portion 19 of saidv upper die 2. 'I"hus, it will be appreciated thatwith engagement ofV the rib 22 in the openings formed inthe collar like extension 28, further movement as between Vthe punch 21v and the,
therefore, that proper engagement of the punch 21 in the oval opening 9 of the lower` die 1 will at all Vtimes be insured.
In operation of my improved invention andl assun'iing that the upper and lower diesV have been properly positioned upon a receiving or `operating machine, the body-portion of a grommet or similar fastener indicated for convenience by the numeral 16., is
engaged with the under side of the oval shaped body portion 19 `of the upper die 2, it 'being borne in mind that this oval, body portion is magnetized and by consequence.
retains such body portion 16 of the grommet in engagement therewith. When so engaged with the body portion19 o-f the upper die 2, the fastener element 16 will have the oval shaped punch 21 extended through and downwardly beyond the oval opening formed therein, while the attaching prongs 17 of such element will be disposed downwardly .and located in direct alignment with the curved exposed faces of the various dogs 6 arranged upon the lower die 1. Also, a washer 14 is laid upon the bed block 4: of the lower die 1, within the opening provided therefor in the cap or cover 10, the positioning of this washer upon the bed block 4 being in a manner to correspond to the positioning or placement of the body portion 16 of the fastener upon the upper die 2. The material receiving the grommet or separable fastener, that is, the material upon which this particular fastener is to be secured, indicated at this time for the purpose of convenience by the reference character M is now arranged between the upper and lower dies 2 and 1. At this time, the upper die is moved sharply downwardly causing the punch 21 to be passed thro-ugh an adjacent portion of such material M during its engagement in the oval opening 9 of the lower die 1. Simultaneously, the penetrating prongs 17 of the body portion 16 o-f the grommet or separable fastener will be passed through corresponding portions of said marial M while the free extremities of the penetrating prongs 17 will be deflected inwardly over the inwardly curved exposedl portions of the adjustably exposed dogs 6, thereby flexing or bending the extremities of said prongsvr 17 over the washer 14 retained, during this time, in the oval-faced opening 13 formed in the cap or-cover 10. Suiiicient force or pressure is of course directed upon the Lipper' die-2 lto effect apositive clamping,-
assemblage as between the body portion` 16 and the washer 14 of the grommet or separable fastening, and by consequence, the firm engagement of the inwardly bent extremities of the penetrating prongs 17 over the adjacent portions of said washer 14. In this way, it will be appreciated that the assembled'grommet will ber firmly secured-to thel receiving material M and by conse-- q uence, its, disengagement' from. such material either through relative movement or similar objectionable features will; be avoidedf. The upperdie 2 is nowfreturned or raised to its,V initial or* normalposition whereupon the material M is-rearranged with respect to the device, another body portion 16 engaged with the upper die 2 and a washer with the lower die 1 whereupon the device is ready for further operation.
