This invention relates to gas burners, and has for its obj ect to provide an el'licient burner in which back fire to the mixer is prevented by causing the gas to pass through the 5 wall of an inner perforated tube to an outer chamber surrounding the tube prior to its escape to the burner outlets. i
Further ob'ects of the invention are to provide a burner which can be economically manufactured, which can be easily assembled or taken apart and to provide a mounting for the cover member and the perforated tube retained thereby by which the tube and cover member are accurately positioned with respect to the body of the burner and by which the perforated tube is so held that it is free to expand longitudinally and will not be distorted by expansion due to heat.
l/Vith the above and other objects in view the invention may be said to comprise the burner as illustrated in the accompanying drawings hereinafter described and articularly set forth in the appended claims, tgether with such variations and modifications thereof as will be apparent to one skilled in the art to which the invention appertains.
Reference should be had to the accompanying drawings forming a. part of this specification in which Fig. 1 is a side elevation of the burner with a portion of the head broken away and shown in section; Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fig. 1 taken at right angles thereto; Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view of the cover member; Fig. i is a top plan view of the burner; Fig. is a top plan view 'of the body portion of the burner with the cover member and inner tube removed.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, the burner consists of a tubularbody 1 which may be in the form of a casting, the lower end of the body portion being enlarged to provide a mixing portion 2 into which projects the gas inlet 3 which is of smaller diameter than the end portion 2 of the gas burner and which is connected thereto by aspider 4 to provide an annular air inlet surroundinor the gas inlet 3.
At the upper end thereof the body of the burner has a portion 5 of enlarged rdiameter, the lower end of which is connected to the body of the burner by an offset shoulder 6. On opposite sides the upper portion 5 of the body is flared outwardly to .provide diainetrically opposite channels 8 which gradually yincrease in depth toward the top of the burner. Adjacent the top of the burner slotted attaching lugs 9 project outwardly from the channeied portions 8, the lugs 9 being formed with their Vtop surfaces on a level with the upper edge of the body. The upper end of the burner body has attached thereto a closure member 11 which has a peripheral shape corresponding substantially to the shape of the upper edge of the body and which is provided with slotted attac-hing lugs 12 which overlie the attaching lugs Q of the body, the lowerA edges of the lugs 12 Abeing oflset upwardly from the underface of the closure member to provide positioning shoulders 13 which space the lugs 12 slightly from the lugs 9 and form a seal to prevent escape of gas to the space between the lugs. ToA assist in accurately positioning the closure member and in holding the closure member against relative movement with respect to the body portion the closure member has formed therein downwardly projecting lugs 1li which fit within the upper ends of the channels S in the body and bear against the bottom and sides thereof, the closure member being detachably secured to the body member y by means of bolts 15 engaging in` the slots of the attaching flanges 9 and 12.
The closure member 11 is preferably hollowe'd out at the top to provide a lighter construction and has around its periphery closely spaced notches 16 which extend in the direction of the axis of the burner and are of gradually increasing depth toward their lower ends, the bottoms of the notches 16 at the bottom Vof the closure member ly-Y ing inside the wall of the upper portion 5 of the burner, there being forming poits through which the gas escapes from the body of the burner. On its underside the closure member 11 has an annular boss 17 which is of the same diameter as the flange 7 at the lower end of the enlarged portion 5 and which is axially aligned with said iiange. A perforated tube 18 is secured between the bottomof the closure member 11 and the lower end of the enlarged portion 5 ofthe body, and this tube has its upper end fitting upon the outside of the annular boss 17 and its lower end ttng apen the outside ot the flange 7. The flange 7 and boss 17 serve to rigidly hold the tube 18 centrally Within the enlarged portion 5 and the tube 18 is of a length slightly less than the distance between the undertace of the closure member 11 and the lower end of the enlarged portion 5 so that it is capable or' slight longitudinal movement upo`n the flange 7 and boss 17. The longitudinal play of the tube 18 is suiiioient to permit free longitudinal expansion or the tube when it becomes heated so that the tube will not be distorted if it becomes heated while in use.
Having described my invention, I claim 1. A gas bui-ner comprising a tubular head portion and a tubular body portion of smaller diam-eter communicating with the vinner end of the head portion, an annular iiange within the head portion forming a Continuation oi" said body portion, a closure member secured upon the outer end oip4 said head portion said member having peripheral notches forming gas outlets, and said inember having an inwardly projecting boss upon its inner side, interiitting shoulders on 'said 'cover plate and head for positioning said boss in axial alignment with said annular Hangs, and a perforated tube within the head portion, said tube having its' opposite ends fitting upon said annular flange and boss respectively.
2. A gas burner comprising a ti'ibul'ar body enlarged at one end to provide a mixer portion and at its opposite end to provide a head portion, an annular iange projecting into the inner end of the head portion, said flange forming a continuation ot the passageway leading into the head, a closure member secured upon the outer end'ot the head, said member having peripheral slots forming gas outlet openings, laterally extending attae'hing lugs formed upon the closure member and body, said lugs having int-erengaging shoulders to position the closure' member on the head, securing .means cooperating with said lugs, an inwardly projecting boss on the inner side of the closure n'i'ember in axial alignment with the annular tiange, and a pertorated'tube having its ends littiii@r u en said flanoe and boss resnee- D L o l. tivel said tube havino' a slightlongitudinal 7 v 2D u 23 play on said boss and flange to allow forexpansion and contraction.
