Description

June 15 1926.
H. LE GRIS KOISTENER FOR ciezms AND TOBACCO Filed' Dec. 19, 1923 w ATTORNEY Patented June 15, 1926.
UNITED STATES nonacn LE ems, on NEW YORK, N. Y.
mors'rnnna rorv CIGARS AND TOBACCO.
Application filed December 19, 1923. Serial No. 681,490.
The invention relates to improvements in devices for maintaining cigars and tobacco moist. The object of the invention is to provide an article which may be placed in any form of humidor, cigar box, tobacco box or any other form ofcontainer and which will be adapted to retain itself in any size or form of container. The device comprises in part a casing or shell formed of telescoping members which are forced in opposite 'directions by springs, so that the members will press against the sides or walls of-the container and hold themselves in place.
In the central member of the device there is contained an absorbent material for holding the moisture and for giving off the moisture by evaporation. Other features will be apparent from the following description.
In the drawing forming part of-this application,
Figure 1 is cross section partly in elevation showing the device.
Figure 2 is a perspective view of abox of cigars showing the use of the device.
Figure 3 is a side elevation partly in section of a container of tobacco illustrating one way of usingthe device, and
Figure 4 is a cross section on of Figure 1. c
The improved device comprises three cylindrical members 5, 6 and 7 the central member being smaller in diameter than the others, so that they may be telescopically movable with relation to one another as shown. The member 5 thereof has perforations 8 distributed at intervals over 1ts en- The members 6 and 7 have closed ends 10 and 11 and opened at 12 and 13 allowing member 5 to slide freely within the bore of members 6 and 7, said members 6 and 7 having perforations equally distributed over their entire bodies permitting the evaporation of the liquid in the absorbent material 9. WVithin members 6 and 7 are coiled springs 14 and 15 which are secured to lugs 16 and 17 at the ends of member 5. Said the line springs hold the device in its normal positron, and when inserted into the space 1n the cigar box Wl11Cl1 was previously occupied by a cigar as shown in Figure 2. The springs 14: and 15 exert outward pressure on the members 6 and 7 and this forces the ends of members 6 and 7 against the walls of cigar box 18 and 19. Before the device is put into place the member 5 which contains the absorbent material is first dipped in water, and when the cigar box is closed the liquid in the absorbent material keeps the air in the box moist and the cigars are at all times in proper condition.
In Figure 3 I have shown the device used in a container of tobacco 20 which is placed across the top and held in place by the outward pressure exerted by springs 14 and 15 against the walls of container 21 and 22. In Figure 4 I have shown the end of member 5 cut away at 23, forming a bent over portion 24 said portion 24 being arranged to hold the absorbent material 9 in a fixed position.
The present device is therefore adapted for various forms and sizes of containers and may be varied in many Ways without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having described my invention, what I claim is 1. A device of the character described comprising a casing composed of three perforated tubular members, absorbent material within said central member, the relative end members being movable, springs mounted in said central member to force said end members outwardly and permit same to move freely upon said central member.
2. A device of the character described comprising a casing composed of a central perforated member, an absorbent pack 'mounted therein, two perforated movable end members mounted upon said central member, and springs mounted in the respective ends of said central member and engaging said end members to adjust said device to spaces of varying sizes.
Signed at the city, county, and State of New York, this 10th day of December, 1923.
HORACE LE Gets.
