MOISTUREPROOF SCRIBABLE SHEET, TAG, AND THE LIKE.

This invention relates to improvements in tags and particularly to an improved moisture-proof scribable tag and has for an ob-' ject to provide a construction which may a have any desired configuration and which may have writing or other information applied thereto by removing part of the tag through the use of a stylus or other instrument.

Another object .of the invention is to provide a tag which is formed with a base of a given material and covered with a substance which may be readily penetrated and removed by the use of a stylus or similar in strument whereby writing or other information may be applied to the tag.

In forming a moisture-proof tag according to the present invention, a sheet 1 of some desired substance is provided which has a certain distinctive color and said sheet is coated with a substance 2 which may be removed bya stylus. or other instrument whereby the base material 3 may be seen therethrough. As an example, the base material 3 may be metal, such as aluminum, and the covering 2 may be a suitable substance, as for instance, enamel. If preferred, the base 3 could be celluloid, as for instance, white celluloid, and the covering substance 2 could be water-proof ink or a coating of celluloid of a different color from the base 3. The sheet 1 may be made of any desired size, as for instance, a convenient size for stamping the desired tags therefrom as illustrated particularly in Figures 1 and 2.

In Figure 1, it will be noted that the openings 4 show where tags similar to that illustrated in Figure 2 have been removed. After the base has been provided with its coating, the tags are stamped, cut or otherwise formed from the sheet 2 into the desired shape. hen formed as shown in Figure 2,. suitable apertures 5 are provided. In this form of the invention, large end sec tions 6 and 7 are presented with a restricted connecting neck 8. In the structure shown in Figure 3, the sections 6 and 7 are almost as large as the neck 8 while in Figure 4, the large end 9 is provided with an aperture 10 co-acting with the aperture 11 and with a comparatively long neck 12.

In Figure 5, a structure is shown similar to Figure 4: except that the neck 12 is much shorter. It will thus be seen from the sheet 1, that different forms of tags may be constructed without departing from the spirit of the invention. When a tag for instance, has been stamped from sheet 1 into the desired shape, it may be of the shape shown in Figures 2 and 6. When this tag is to be used, it may be applied to an article of jewelry or other article in any desired manner and either before or after it is applied, a stylus may be used to remove part of the coating 2 so as to expose the base 3 which is of a different color. In using the stylus, the coating '2 is merely removed along certain lines to produce numbers or other configurations for indicating the value of the article, cost price and other information. It will be understood that the entire coating is not removed but merely a small part to provide the desired configuration as indicated by the configuration 13.

In Figure 7 will be seen a slightly modified structure in which there is not only a coating 2 provided on the base 3 but a coating 14 is provided on the rear face of the base 3 so that the front and rear will present the same structure though the coatings a might be of different colors. In any event, the coatings must be of a different color from the base 3 so that when a stylus is used thereon, the base 3 may be readily observed through the groove provided bythe stylus.

It will, of course, be evident that the sheet 1 might be coated by any suitable process either on one side or both sides for forming either the structure shown in Figure 6 or that shown in Figure 7. Preferably the lid coating 2 or the coating 14 is such that will resist the action of waterand also certain other fluids whereby when the jewelry is cleaned, the tag may also be cleaned without any injury thereto. It will also be noted that not only the. tag shown in the drawing may be made but other forms of tags without in any Way departing from the spirit of the invention.

By reason of the construction specified. a substantially non-soilable tag is provided d one which when discolored, may be meeaaa easily and readily cleaned at the same time that the jewelry is cleaned.

What I claim is:

A scribable sheet, comprising a base of a given color, and a. coating on each face of a different color, said coatings being capable of being removed by a stylus whereby upon the use of a stylus grooves may be formed in the coatings for exposing the base therebeneath.
