The present invention relates to improvements in center punches for marking the center of a piece of work to be drilled cen V trally. Y
The general object ofthe invention is to provide a tool for facilitatingthe operation of definitely locating andinarlring the central or axial'line of a piece of work, such as a piece of machinery shafting or the like.
The above and other objects are accomplished by instrumentalities pointedk out in the following specification.

A satisfactory embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings forming part of the specification and in whichl Figurel is a plan view of the body portion of the tool without the table support.

A hand wheel23 at one end of a shaft 2e ro' trates the latterto turn in a bearing in'upper plate 18 through which shaft 241 extends, the lower endof shaft 24 being liXedly secured .to pinion 12, and journaled in a socket in base plate 9, as shown inFigure 2.
Punch 7 is slidable in a vertically disposed sleeve whicli is carried byabase .plate 26 superimposed upon upper plate`18 and adjustable laterally by' a plurality of set screws 26 extending through screw threaded openings in upright lugs 27 upon the upper plate and into sockets 28 in the base portion .26. VThe provision ofv this construction perinits of adjusting'the pointed lower end of punch 7 into the centerof guide opening 6 regardless of offsetting on the part of the point kwith respect to the axis ofthe punch which frequently results from defective grinding, burringand the like. The adjusting screws are locked by nuts 29 and the base portion 26 is locked in any of its adjusted positions by `clamp' screws 30 extending through enlarged ychambers 31'in base portion 26 and screwed into the upper plate 18, said screws also extending through washers 32 disposed over the upper ends ofthe chambers '31. The interior of sleeve 25 is providedivith a longitudinal groove 38 for the reception of a pin 84: carried by the punch 7 to prevent rotation of the punch .and possible decentering of the pointl thereof.

A central opening 38, indicated by dott-ed lines, alines with the passage 5 and is disposed over a carrier 39 having a centrally tapered seat lO for the reception of the lower end of the piece of work 8. A plurality of lexible hangers all. are secured at one end to opposite portions oit the carrier 39 and are trained around sheaves 42 and connected to counter-weights d3. Brackets t depending from opposite portions ot the top support the sheaves and the long dimensions of the hangers il and legs 3G are such that the weights 4i?) may elevate the carrier to points opposite the sheaves 42.
In using the device just described, the

It' additional down pull is found necessary to hold the work elevated, then suitable additional weights, such as those used with a beam scale, may be applied. Then the work is thus supported by carrier 39, operating handle 23 is turned to move arms 17 in-l wardly until the inner ends of said arms make Contact with spaced portions on the surfaces of the work 8. The sloping ot the wall of seat 40 enables the work to readily assume a vertically upright position. When the parts are so positioned, the projecting upper end ot punch is given a blow with a hammer, whereupon the pointed lower end makes the required mark in the center of the adjacent end ot the work.
Although l have shown and described one embodiment ot' my invention, it is to be understood that the same is susceptible of various changes; and l reserve the right to employ sucl as may come within the scope of the appended claims.
I claim:
l. A center punch comprising a body having a vertically extending passage for receiving the work to be punched, a slidable punch extending vertically downward into the passage and disposed in alinement with the center thereof, a plurality et arms arranged in angular relation and slidable radially toward and away from the center otl the passage, means ior operating said arms to slide simultaneously and synchronously into contact with spaced lateral portions of the work and thereby center the saine with the punch, and gravity actuated means engaging the lower end ot the work'and supporting the same vertically between .said arms.
A center punch comprising a body having a base member provided with a centrally disposed vertically extending passage tor receiving the work to be punched, an upper member disposed above and arranged in spaced relation to the-base and having a vertically disposed guide centered with the y passage ot the base, a punch slidably mounted in said guide and entendible into the passage oit the base and into contact with the center ot the work arranged therein, at least three arms arranged in angular relation and slidahle radially toward and away from the center et the passage and disposed between 1he base and the upper member, and means tor operating said arms to slide simultaneously and synchronously into contact with spaced portions of the work to be punched and thereby center the same with the punch, 3. A center nnich comprising a body having a hase member provided with a centrally disposed vertically extending passage lio-r receiving the work to be punched, an upper member disposed above and arranged in spaced relation to the base and having a vertically disposed guide centered with the passage of the base, a punch slidably mount` ed in said guide and extendible into the passage of the base and into contact with the center of the work arranged therein, at least three arms arranged in angular' relation and slidable radially toward and away trom the center of the passage and carried by the said upper member, and means for operating said arms to .slide simultaneously and synchronously into contact with spaced portions of the work to be punched and thereby center the same with the punch.
