BLUE-FLAME BURNER.
Application filed September 5, 1923.
The present invention relates to a. blue flame gas burner which is primarily intended for use in connection with incubators.
It is very essential to maintain the heat in 5 an ii'icubator constant, and one object of the invention is to so construct the burner that when the heat in the incubator rises above a certain predetermined amount, the burner will be cut oil until the heat is normal and amount.

3 The burner consists of a solid base 12 recessed to form a passage 12 and carrying an upright pipe 18 connected with said passage. it the upper end of the pipe 13 is attached a sleeve 16 in which a valve plug 17 is l mounted to rotate and formed in the plug is a transverse port 18 for passing the gas from the pipe 13 upwardly in the sleeve 16. One end of this valve plug 17 carries a lever 19 to which is positively connected a wire 20 for operating the valve from any convenient point.
At the upper end of the sleeve 16 is mounted a mixing tube 22 which is connected to a burner head 23. The mixing tube has air ports 24 and is provided internally with a portion 24L defining a reduced axial gas pas sage 24: leading from the lower end of the tube and terminating at the level of the lower limit of the ports 24. The passage is tapered from its lower end toward its upper end and will thus discharge a jet of gas at increased pressure axially into the lower end portion of the tube between the lower ends of the ports 24: so that a proportionately large supply of fresh air will be drawn in through said ports to mix with the gas. The head 23 is solid and is recessed at its upper end to form a chamber 25'connect-ed with the vtube 22 by a reduced axial passage 25. Thus, the mixture of air and gas emerging from the mixing tube will be initially heated by the head as the mixture flows through the passage 25 to the chamber 25 where the mixtu e will hen b fu her he t d.- betere the relight itself when the heat in the incubator becomes lower than a certain predelermined Serial No. 661,060.

A pilot burner 28 is provided at the upper end of aslnall tube 29 which is carried at the lower end of the sleeve 16. The pilot burner opens to one side of the burner head and communicates with the passage of the sleeve 16 below the valve plug 17, so that the pilot burner 28 will always be suppliedwitli gas as long as the valve 15 remains open, whet-her the valve plug 17 be open or closed. oin sequently, it the lever 19 on the valve plug 17 is turned to obstruct the passage of the gas through the sleeve, the pilot burner 2 will remain lighted while the main burner will be extinguished. Accordingly when the lever 19 is again turned to admit gas to the main burner, said main burner will be immediately relighted by the pilot burner 28. At 30 is shown a setscrew for adjusting the inlet opening of the pilot tube 29 to control the amount of gas supply to the pilot burner.
On the short pipe 22 is mounted a coneshaped hood 81 extending upwardly above the burner head 23 and connecting with a cylindrical flue 32 for carrying away the burnt gases. This hood is secured on the short pipe 22 by means of a clamping screw 35. The base of the hood 31 has a central opening from which depends a collar 31', and openings 81 grouped about the central opening. The mixing tube 22 passes through the collar 31 and the central opening of the base and is secured thereto by a clamp screw threaded into a side of the collar 31 Around the flue 32 is mounted a drum 33 closed on all sides but having a branch. 3a for connecting the drum with the interior of an incubator.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
A burner of the character specified com- :prising a base in which is formed a passage toreceive gas from a suitable source of supply, an upright pipe attached to the base and in communication with the passage thereof, a sleeve at the upper end of the pipe, a valve in, the sleeve a mixing tube con:
