E. WHEELER COMBINED MUFFLER AND CUT-OUT Filed May 10. 1923 Patented May 25,, 1926.

CO'MIBHTED MUFFLER AND CUT-OUT.
Application filed May 10,
This invention relates to'mufiers for the exhaust pipes of internal combustion engines, and has for its object to provide a combined mufilcr and cut-out.
a An object of the invention is to provide a combined muiileinand cut-out of extremely simple and substantially construction and which is of inexpensive and practical construction and is adapted to be readily inserted in the exhaust line of an automobile motor.-
Other objects and advantages will be made manifest in the following specification of an embodiment of the invention illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure l is a side elevation of the motor as installed. v
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal, sectional View of the mufier and cut-out.
Fig. 3 is an end view of the cut-out.
Fig. l is a cross section and end view on line 5-4: of Figure 2.
The present invention consists of a ma n exhaust line or pipe 2, having adjacent its 2 outlet end a cut-out valve 3, which is connected to an operating lever 4, to whlch' is attached a spring 5 for normally throw ng the valve 3 to a substantially closed osition. The lever 4 is adapted to be operate by any 80 suitable means, as a foot pedal 6 mounted at the drivers station in the vehicle, and being connected by a link 7 to the lever 4:, so that by a pressure on the pedal, the valve 3 may be opened to permit direct flow of exhaust gases under considerable pressure through the mufller and cut-out. p
The pipe 2 constitutes the central element of a mutller including a number of concentric tubes or shells 10, into-the innermost of 40 which gases in the center pipe 2' will pass through an aperture 11 when the cut-out valve 3 is closed. The gases entering the inner tube around the main exhaust pipe 2 are caused to flow forwardly to the opposite end of the mufiler structure, and thence through an outlet 12 into the next expansion chamber, and so on, eventually discharging through apertures 13, which may be provided in one or the other of the heads 14; en-
closing the ends of the mufiler tubes, and
through which heads the cut-out or exhaust pipe 2 extends; the forward end of the cutout pipe bein connected to the usual exlmust pipe E, igure 1.
A feature of the/invention resides in the fact that the main exhaust pipe 2 is consid- 1923. Serial 'Nc. 63?,956.
erably greater in diameter than theexhaust pipe of the vehicle E. It is well known that if the exhaust gases from an internal combustion engine are discharged from a small exhaust pipe into a large exhaust pipe, a pleasing rumble or low roar is produced, when the cut-out is ,open, as distinguished from the sharp crack produced upon discharging the gases directly from the ex-v the parts in the assembled position.
The device may be mounted in any suitable manne'r, and is shown as having a bracket 18, which may be clamped to the chassis frame F, or otherwise supported.
The heads 14: are shown as detachably secured on the interposed mufier shells as by till means of tie bolts 19, passing longitudinally from end to end and through the heads.
Further embodiments, modifications and variations may be resorted to within the principle of the invention.
What is claimed is:
1. A combined 'mufier and cut out com prising a main exhaust pipe adapted to be connected to the exhaust motor of a vehicle, said mam exhaust pipe being materially greater in diameter than the diameter or the vehicle exhaust pipe, a valve mounted in ithe rearward end of the main exhaust pipe, a first head mounted about said main exhaust pipe forwardly of said valve, a second head mounted about said main exhaust pipe forwardly of the first head, said second head being positioned approximately at the middle of said main exhaust pipe, means providing two concentric annular shoulders upon the opposed faces of said heads, a first shell mounted between the heads against the inner shoulder, a second shell mounted between the heads about the first shell and disposed against the outer shoulder, there being a single aperture in the main exhaust pipe vforwardly of the first head, a single aperture in the first shell behind the second head aud another aperture in the first head between the first and second 39 pipe from the till 2. A combined mufiler and cut out com prising a main exhaust pipe adapted to be connected to the exhaust pipe from the motor of a vehicle, said main exhaust pipe being materially greater in diameter than the diameter of the vehicle exhaust pipe, 21 valve mounted in the rearward end of the main exhaust pipe, a first head mounted about said main exhaust pipe forwardly of said valve, a second head. mounted about said main exhaust pipe forwardly of the first head, said second head being positioned approximately at the middle of said main exhaust pipe, means providing two concentric annular shoulders upon the opposed faces of said heads, a first shell mounted between the heads against the inner shoulder, a sec- 20 0nd shell mounted between the heads about the first shell and disposed against the outer 'shoulder,'there being a single aperture in the main exhaust pipe forwardly of the first head, a single aperture in the first shell behind the second head and another aperture in the first head between the first and second shells, said valve being in the form of a butterfly valve, a lever rigidly secured intermediate its ends to the butterfly valve, and a coil spring secured to one end of the lever and to the second shell normally holding the valve in closed position, the other end of the lever being adapted to be connected to a suitable actuating device upon the vehicle, whereby the valve may be opened against the action of said spring by said actuating device.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
EVERETT VHEELER.
