TABULATION MECHANISM OF TYPEWRITING MACHINES.
Original application filed January 25, 1924, Serial No. 688,899. Divided and this application filed April- 10, -1825, Serial No. 22,061, and in Germany November 4, 19181.
My invention relates to improvements in the tabulation mechanism of typewriting machines, and the object of the improvemnts is to provide a tabulation mechanism which is simple in construction and handy in operation. With this object in View my invention consists in disposing the tabulation stops on a bar provided at the front side of the carriage. Therefore the said stops are readily accessible, and, further, I am enabled to provide very short tabulation key levers,
- which key levers extend from the rear part of the keyboard and through the front part of the frame. into position for engagement with vertically shiftable rods adapted to be lifted by the key levers into position for engagement with the said tabulation stops.
For the purpose of explaining the inven tion an example embodying the same has been shown in the accompanying drawings in which the same reference characters have been used in all the views to indicate corresponding parts. In said drawings,
Fig. 1, is a sectional elevation showing the upper part of a typewriting machine. Fig. 2, is a top plan view of-Fig'l with the upper part of the paper carriage re-' moved, and v Fig. 3, is a sectional elevation on albroken plane of section.
In describing the invention itwill be assumed that in improved tabulation mechanism is embo ied in a typewriting machine of the type shown and described in my orig inal a plication for Patent Ser. No. 688,399, filed fanuary 25th, 1924, now Patent 1,553,- 7 65, dated Sept 15, 1925, of which the present application is a division. But I WlSh it to be understood that my invention is not limited to'the :use of the tabulation mechanism in a machine of the type referred to in the said original application. In the present application I shall-make reference {to the tabulation mechanism and such parts 5 of the machine as are necessary for getting a clear understanding of the said .mechanism. For further information reference is made to the said original a plic'ation.
In the example shown in t e figures my improved typewriting machine comprises a frame 1 having a top plate 2. To the said top plate rails 3 and 4: are secured which provide a guide for a paper carriage 5, which carriage is provided with letter spacing mechanism constructed as followszOn the top plate 2 of the frame of the machine and at the rear thereof a bail consisting of a rail 8 of square cross-section and arms 7 is rockmgly mounted in eyes 8 and 9 secured to the bottom side of the plate 2. Onthe rail 6 mounted in eyes 20 and 21 secured to the plate 2, and arms 22, 23 and 24. The lower rack 17 is carried by the upper rack 18 and it is longitudinally slidable thereon a distance corresponding to the letter space. As
showna-pair of screws 25, are passing through the slots 26 formed in the upper rack. A spring (not shown) tends to pull the lower rack to the right. l he heads of the screws 25 are acted upon by springs 27 reducing the noise connected with the op eration of the racks. The arm 23 is connected by a link 28 with a frame 29 rockingly mounted on trunnions 30. The frame 29 is adapted to be rocked by tie armature of an clectromagnet 31 for letter spacing after printing a letter, as has been described in mv aforesaid original application for patent. en the armature is attracted by the electromagnet 31 the frame 29 and the link 28 are carried along, so that the pawl 11 temporarily releases the lower rack 17 and engages the upper rack. Thereupon the lower rack is pulled by its spring to the right. If thereafter the armature of the electromagnet 31 is released the racks 17 and 18 are lifted by a spring 50 (Fig. 1) so that the pawl 11 comes again into engagement with the lower rack which is shifted by the The tabulation keys 32 are carried by levers 33 disposed with their inner or rear ends in positions forengagement with vertical bars 3 1. Said bars are acted upon by leaf epringe 8t tending to force the'same downwardly and away from tabulation stops 36 placed on a rack 37 ot' the paper carriage. The bars 3 1- are adapted to rock a frame 38 mounted at '39, 40 and acting on a lever 41 mounted at 412. The free end 43, of the said lever is disposed above a head 4A adjustably mounted on an arm 45 secured to one of the arms of the rail 6. When depressing one of the tabulation keys the bar 34 controlled thereby is lifted into position for engagement with the tabulation stop 36 for arresting the paper carriage, and therail 6 and the pawl 11 are retracted away from the racks 17, 18 so as to release the carriage, which is now pulled to'the ri ht. For reducing the impact of the carriage stinking against the tabulation sto 36 a brake shoe 4a: is provided which is torced by an arm 4-"? secured to the frame 38 against the bottom side of the rail 16 of the carriage.
While in desdribing the invention reference has been made to aparticular example embodying the same I wish it to be under- Q5 stood that my inventionvis not limited to the construction shown in the drawings, and
that various changes may be made in the general arrangement of the apparatus and the construction of its parts without departing from the invention. p
ll claim; l. lln a type-writing machine the com bination of a frame, a paper carriage, a rackand-pawl escapement device including a rack mounted on the frame a rail swingingly mounted on the frame a pawl slidable on the rail and engaged by the carriage, said bar in its range of swing carrying the pawl to and from a position of engagement with the rack, tabulation mechanism including a stop borne by the carriage and a bar borne by the frame and movable to and from stop-engaging position, and means for shifting said bar and swinging said rail simultaneously.
2. In a type-writing machine the combination of a frame, a paper carriage, a rail swingingly mounted on said frame, a rack-and-pawl escapement device arranged between frame and carriage, one of the components of said rack-and-pawl eseapement device being movable with the carriage and slidably mounted on said rail and movable bythe swinging of the rail to inactive position, tabulation mechanism including a stop borne by the carriage and a bar borne by the frame and movable to and from stop-engaging position said bar in its advance to stop-engaging position swinging said rail to the position of inaction of the escapemen't device. 1
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature.
