Feather Dusting Brushes.
Patented Jams), 1875.
UNITED STATES PATENT GEEIGE) ALFRED GRISWOLD, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO VMYRTILLA GRIS- WOLD, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN FEATHER Dus'rINe-BRUSHES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 158,412,
dated January 5,1875; application filed December 1, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALFRED D. GRrswoLD, of the city,'county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Feather DustingBrushes 5 and that the following is a full, clear, and exactv description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing's and to the letters of reference marked thereon making a part of this specification This invention is in the nature of an improvement in feather dustingbrushes and the invention consists in a feather dustingbrush, constructed as a new article of manufacture, with the feathers thereof arranged in a'series of small bunches, each of said bunches secured to an elastic stem, and the elastic stems of the several bunches secured directly to the head of the handle; or instead of securing the elactic stems to bunches of feathers, as above stated, each separate feather may have an elastic stem secured to it and be fastened to the head ofthe handle.
In the accompanying sheet of drawings, Figure l is a side elevation of my., improved feather duster. Fig. 2 is a detail of a bunch of feathers with elastic stem, and Fig. 3 a single feather with stem.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts in the several gures.
The increased demand and consequent growing scarcity of feathers suitable for making dusting-brushes has rendered it desirable that the shorter and less expensivefeathers be made available for the purpose of constructing them. To accomplish this resultI construct my brush by makin g up the feat-hers in small bunches, A, securing each of these bunches to one end of any suitablel elastic stem, B, and inserting the other ends of the elastic stems into holes a formed in the head of the handle C, where they may be retained in any desirable manner.
A feather dusting-brush, constructed substantially in the manner described, will be found stronger and more elastic than the ordinary feather dusting-brush, while at the same time the shorter feathers have been utilized, and a brush produced equally good or better than the ordinary duster, and at a less cost. These elastic stems may be hidden in any suitable manner that will make a finish to the construction.
Instead of securing the elastic stems to small bunches of feathers. each separate feather may be provided with such a stem.
IV am aware that feather dusting-brushes have been made with a supplemental head, secured to the head proper of the handle by an elastic or flexible connection, for the same purposes accomplished in my invention, and I hereby disclaim this construction.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
As a new article of manufacture, a feather dusting-brush, constructed of a series of bunch es of feathers or of single feathers, each of said bunches or single feathers being secured to one end of an elastic stem or prolongation, without the intervention of a head, and the other end of the said elastic stern .secured directly t0 the head of the handle,
substantially in the manner and for the purpose described.
