The gate meinbers 35 and the inner 'end portions 3G of the levers are of greater weight than the outer end portions of the levers, whereby the action of gravity will tend to hold the gate members 35 in the position illustrated in Figures 1, 2, and 3, in which position the gate members' provide an obstruction across the platform. The outer end portions of the levers 36 are indicated at 33 and are enlargcdV vertically outwardly of the horizontal pivot elements 37. These enlarged outer end portions of the levers are provided with oppositely inclined slots 39 which are engaged by loops e() at the upper ends of links 41 which are attached at their lower ends to the outer end portions of the rod 20, as indicated at 4t2. f y
F rom the foregoing description of the vaiious parts of the device, the operation thereof will be readily understood. A motorist or other traveler approaching the gate members 35 grasps the adjacent pull string 30. A pull on the string 30 will cause rocking of the shaft 23A and movement of the member 24; out of position to engage with the rod 20.
Further movement of the motorist or other traveler toward the gate members 35 will cause a weight to be placed on one of the movable platform members 7 and the inner end ortions of the members 7 will be swuno v downwardly until they rest upon the transverse bars 21-22. This downward movement of the platform section wall cause a corresponding movement of the rod 2() and a pull will be caused on the outer end portions of the levers 36.through the links 41. rThis pull on the outer end-portions of the levers 36 will cause the inner end portions of said levers to be swung upwardly and apart so that passage of the motorist or other traveler across the sections 7 of the platform will be unobstructed. As soon as the weight of the motorist. or other traveler has been removed from both of the sections 7,` these sections will be swung upwardly to the plane of the platform under the action of gravity on the relatively heavy outer end portions of the levers 3-13 and the stop member 24. on the rock shaft 23 also will be permitted to move as a result of the action of gravity to position t0 engage with the underside of the rod 2O and to prevent downward movement of sections 7 of the platform take'placeuntil oneofthe levers 28 is again operatedby 'means of the pull' string 30. y

Like reference charactersYY have been appliedto Alike parts of the two forms of the device and I shall confine my description of the modification which s illustrated in Figures 4 and 5 to a statement of the points of difference between the modiications and the form'of the device which has been hereinbefore fully described. Each ofthe supporting frames of the modified device has a pair of stringers 3 which are similar and identical in essential respects with the stringers 3 of the preferred form of the device and which support a platform which comprises fixed sections 6 and the movable sections 7 as hereinbefore described. The rock shaft 23, the supporting o-r stop member 24 together with the standards 27, the levers 28 and the connections between levers 28 and the rock shaft 23 are omitted from the modified form of device. The posts 34 of the preferred form of the device are replaced by similar posts 34 which carry bars 36. Each gate bar36 is pivotally Supported intermediate its length on the upper end portion of the corresponding post 34 for swinging movement about a horizontal axis and the inner end portion of each gate bar 36 extendsy nearly half way across the platform and cooperates with the inner end portion of the opposite gate bar 36 to provide an obstruction across the platform. The outerl end portion of each gate bar 36 is indicated at 38 and is provided with a transverse slot 39 for engaging with the loop portion 40 of a link 41 which is connected withthe adjacent end of the rod 2O and which differs from the link 4l of the preferred form of the device only in that it is of greater length than the latter. There is no necessity for operating a stop member when the modification is employed and therefore the weight of a traveler approaching the transverse median line of the platform of each supporting structure will cause opening of the gate members.
