and useful Improvements 'in' Hinge C011 structions, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to hinges and particularly tothat type of such devices known as gravity hinges.
In apatent of: Carpenter andAnderson, No. 1,4ei6,449, granted February 27 1923, a
hinge is shown of thegravity type provided with a part-ition clamp of an'adjustable form so'that the hinge may be adjusted to various thicknesses of partition. Thelowerdoor hinge member co prises a pivot portion 21 preferably formed integral with a 'door clamp22 substantially identical with the upper door clamp 18 except that it is provided with a pair of downwardly extending ears 23 which receive a pin 24 upon which a roller 25 is rotatablyxniounted.
This roller 25 engages the cam119 as is clearlyshown. .T o
It is obvious that when'the door is mountedon these hinges and it isswung to one side or the other, it will return to normally closed position by its own weight. The upper and lower .hinges are so placed'upon the frame or partition that when the .door' is swung .to one. side .and moves; upwardly through the action of the cam and roller, the upper door hinge member will finally engage the upper partition hinge member and limit the opening of the door. n other words, the location of the two hinges deter mines the extent of opening of the door and the upper hinge structure forms a stop..
In-the modification shown in Figs. 7, 8 and 9, the upper hinge-structure is the same as that employed in the other embodiment. The lower'hinge structure,.however, is arranged in famanner such that there is a closing tension on the door but the door does not raise as it is swung from one side to the other and this construction will now be described. V V The frame engaging member is identical with that employed in the other construction, except that the tubular member 17 receives a cam sleeve 26 provided with a cam 27 similar to the cam 19 except that it has less pitch and thatit is provided with a holding portion, which may be horizontal or may be very slightly inclined, as shown at 28, the inclination being insufficient to cause any tendency of the door toward movement into closed position. This surface 28 is provided with a depression at 29 which is just beyond the upper endo-f the cam 27. This depression is adapted to receive a-roller 30 mounted in the lower end of a plunger 31 slidably mounted in a tubular guide 32 preferably formed integral with the lower 'door engaging hinge member This tubu lar guide is spaced from the side clamping portions 34 and 35 of this lower hinge member so as to permit the door parts 36 to nest between the tubularguide and these clamping portions 34 and 35. The upper end of the tubular guide is closedand forms an abutment for a spring 37 which thrusts against the: plunger and moves it downwardly so that its roller engages the cam surface with StlffiClGIllJ' pressure to tend to close the door when the roller'is on the cam 27. In
.orderto prevent the rotation of the plunger,
a recess 38 is provided in its side and this recess receives the end of athreaded pin 39' passing through the lower hinge member, as shown in Fig. 8. Pin39 forms a stop to limit upward movement of plunger 31. When the parts reach holding position with the door open, as shown in Fig. 8, the pin 39 abuts against the lower end of the slot 38 and the cam effect is exerted to raise the door bodily and press the upper door hinge member 13 against the upper stationary hinge member and thereby limit opening movement of the door.
The upper hinge structure is substantially identical with that shown in the other figures of the drawing and this hinge structure and the lower one. are so arranged thatthe door has no appreciable vertical movement between them. As in the other structure the upper hinge member forms a stop by ing any further opening of the door.
It will be seen from the foregoing construction that when the door is being opened the plunger will be moved upwardly against the tension of the'spring 31 through the action of the cam 27. If the door is swung short of its full open position'it will return automatically to closed position as in the gravity construction already described. The lower cam is made adjustable and reversible in both cases to position the door and to determine its normal closed position. These features, however, form a part of the copending application referred to and are only referred to herein as they may enter the combination of the specific forth.
What I claim is: r
1. A door hinge, comprising a partition engaging member, a door-engaging member, a cam carried by one of said members, a spring-actuated plunger carried by the other of said members and engaging said cam and normally tending to move said door toa features set predetermined position, said plunger being lower marginal portions of the rear face of said body portion, said plate members being so arranged as not to extend beyond said body portion, an angular plate member having one face secured to said first named plate members, thereby forming a slideway "between the faces of said body portion and said angular plate member, and a second angular plate member having a portion sl-idable in said slideway for adjusting said angular plate members relative to each other to enable them to be secured to supports of varying thickness.
3. A hinged door and jamb structure, comprising an upper hinge member adapted to be secured to a jamb, an upper hinge member adapted to be secured to the door, a lower hinge member secured to the jamb and being provided with a cam for elevating the door upon being opened, a lower door-hinge member, and a spring actuated'plunger carried by said last named member, said plunger engaging said cam and normally tending to move said door into apredetermi-ned position, and means for limiting upward movement of said plunger in said lower door hinge member upon the door being opened to a predetermined degree, said upper and lower hinge members being so spaced that the cam will cause the door to rise when the upward movement of said plunger is limited and thereby cause the upper door hinge member to engage the other upper hinge member and limit the opening movement of the door.

A hinged door and jamb structure, com-- prising an upper hinge member adapted to be secured to the jamb, an upper hinge member adapted to be secured to the door, a lower hinge member adapted to be securedto the jamb and having a cam for elevating the door when being open-ed, a lower hinge mem-, ber adapted to be secured to the door and being provided with means for engagement 5. 6. A door hinge, comprising a stationary 7 member. having an eye, a bearlng sleeve se- 2 cured in sald eye and extending beyond the j same, a movable hinge member having a pin entering and rotatable in saidjsleeve, and a cam member surrounding said sleeve for co operation with said hinge member.
