- the following is a specification.
This invention relat-es to recorders, and more especially of the type used in connection with the ordering and selling of merchandise, which will enable a driver of a i delivery vehicle'to readily ascertain the quantity and character of merchandise each customer desires and accurately and permanently preserve a record of the deliveries for any given period of time.
The objects of the invention are:
First, to construct a recorder of thetype above indicated which can be easily assembled and locked together in order to permit the same to be attached to the outside of a home and accessible to the delivery agent to enable said agent to ascertain what character and quantity of goods are desired, and after the order has been filled to make a permanent record of said delivery and adjust the apparatus for recording the next subsequent order desired. v
Second, to construct a recorder of the kind indicated, whichwill not only be indestructible, compact and reliable in its operation,
, but at the same time inexpensive to manufacture, easily installed and quickly manipulated without any possibility of the several parts from becoming disengaged or inoperative, or require the services of skilled labor or tedious adjustments to be kept in efficient and constant operation.
Third, to provide an apparatus as above described which will mak-e a clear, complete and accurate day by day record of the deliveries, which record can be used after the ela se of a predetermined time to become a bil and finally the receipt of the deliveryk of the` merchandise recorded or indicated thereon by the purchaser, thereby not only avoiding unnecessary bookkeeping of said sales or vexatious disputes which frequently arise as to the accuracy or correctness of the character and quantity of the merchandise delivered or received from day to day'.
Fourth, other objects and advantages of the invention will appear from the detailed construction and arrangement of they parts, manner of assembling the same and mode of op-eration to be hereinafter morefully def` scribed.
The invention consists ofstructural characteristics and relative arrangements of elements which will be presently more fully disclosed and particularly pointed ,out in f the appended claims.

Referring to the drawings, 10 isr the casing which may be secured by means of a screw 11 or any other suitable fastening devices to any stationary part or wall 12 of a structure to prevent surreptitious removah Said casing 10 being provided with a back 13, bottom 111, and sides 15 and 16 forming a pocket with top and front openingsk 17 and 18, said bottom 14; and sides 1.5 and 16 being constructed with inwardly turned flanges or edges 19 and 20, and the side 16 with openings 21, 21, as shown in Figure 7 for the purposes to be presently described.
Supported and sliding within the casing 10 is a roller-supporting or carrying frame 22, said frame being of an inverted U-shape and having preferably outwardly bent and integrally. formed reenforcing flanges .221,
as clearly shown in Figure 9. rl`he upright side sections 23, 23 of frame 22, are provided with oppositely arranged and registering circular openings 24, 25 and 26, and elongated slots 27 and 23, and the forward edges of the two side. sections 23 are connected by a transverse member 29 for purposes to be presently described. c
Tithin the openings 26, 26 is carried a shaft or rod 30 for rotatably supporting a roller 31 on which is wound a roll of material 32, preferably paper, to form a magazine or supply of paper. 35, 36 are stationary or fixed rollers preferably made of rul ber and carried by shafts 33 and 34 journaledin the openings 24, 24 and 25, 25 in the ' side sections 23, 23 offrame 22.
39 and 40 are movable and rotatable. shafts or rods whose ends 41, 41, see Figures 3 and 6, are guided and project respectively through the elongated slots 27 and 23, and the outer or arojecting ends of said shafts 39 and 40 are rotatably seated and engaged by slidable straps or plates 42, 43, connected by coil springs 44 and 45, so that the combined movable and rotatable. shafts or rods 39 and 4'0 with their rubber coverings or rollers 46 and 47 are yieldingly drawn towards the stationary rotatable rollers 33 and 34, whereby said rollers 46 and 47 are capable of having a rotary motion as well as a movement from and towards the rollers 33 and 34, as will be readily understood and needs no further explanation.
Said shafts 39 and 40 being provided with exterior milled turn knobs 37 and 33 for purposes of rotating said rollers 46 and 47, as will be readily understood, and said knobs 37 and 33 can only be turned in clockwise direction in order to permit the shafts or rods 39 and 40 with their rubber coverings 46 and 47 to be rotated only in the direction indicated by the arrows shown in Figure 4, and if said knobs 37 and 33 are 'turned counter-clockwise, their threaded interior ends 331,'see Figure 3, of the knobs 37 and 33 will disengage the shafts 39 and 40, and prevent rollers 46 and 47 rotating.
43 is an Lshaped closure provided with two elongated transverse openings 49 and 50 in the upright portion 51, and' its top section 52 is formed with downwardly )rejecting flanges 53, 53, as shown in Figure 3, and said closure 43 is so proportioned and formed that after the roller-carrying frame 22 is slid and adjusted in the casing 10, as shown in Figure 5, the closure 43 is slid into position with the side edges of the un right portion 51 disposed back of the side flanges 20 of thecasing 10 and between said flanges 2O and the side flanges 221 ofthe roller-carrying frame 22 and the downwardly projecting flanges 53, 53, passing over the top edges of the sides 15 and 16 of the casing 10, as`clearly illustrated in Figures 1 and 5, thereby not only bracing the sides 15 and 16 of the casing, but sealing the top of the casing 10 against the admission of dirt or moisture.
The exposed or front faceI of the closure 43 above and adjacent to the lower transverse opening 50 is provided with designa tions D, of one of the classes of merchandise to be recorded by the device, and in the present case, it identifies dairy products, and the date of the order. Above the space D, designating the class of merchandise, are blank spaces t) for the identification of the name of the customer, and the space S above the upper opening 49 may be utilized for the printing of the name of the firm or merchant delivering the class of merchandise indicated on the closure 48.
The space A in the closure 43 below the lower opening 50 maybe employed for place ing information or directions as to the marner in whichthe recorder or apparatus 1s to be utilized, or any advertisingl matter, or both, if so desired.
The closure. 43 is held in a locked position after being placed in the casing 10 by means of an angular plate 54 which lits over the top section 52 of the closure V43 and against the front side of the top portion of the back 13 of the' casing 10, as clearly shown in Figures 1 and 2, and said plate 54 is firmly held in position by means of the screw 11, and is provided with up-turned shoulders or stops to retain a pencil P, see Figures 1 and 2, in place, to be used in noting on the sheet of paper 32 the quantity of merchandise to be delivered and date of said delivery.
'lhe roller-supporting frame 22 with its rollers 31, having the roll of paper 32 thereon and the two pairs of alined fixed and movable rollers 35, 36, and 46 and 47 in place, as shown in Figure 4, the end of the magazine of paper 32 is threaded so as to Yfirst pass over the front or outer side of the transverse or paper-supporting member 29, then between the two rollers 36 and 46 from left to right, then upwardly and between the rollers 35 and 47 from right to left and downwardly into a chamber formed between said rollers 35 and 36, as clearly illustrated in Figure 4. Y
Said roller-supporting` frame 22 is then slipped into the casing 10, and the threaded ends 331 of the turn knobs 37 and 33 are then made to pass through the openings 21 and 21 in the side 16 of the casing 10 and made to engage the internally threaded ends of the shafts 39 and 40 so as to assume posiions shown in Figures 3 and 5. I
The closure 43 is then slid into position shown in Figures 1 and 2 and made to close the top and front openings 17 and 13 of the casing, except the sight opening 50 through which is exposed the sheet of paper 32, resting or abutting against the transverse papersupporting member 29 is shown in Figures l and 4. The manner of using the recorder is as follows: l Y l The party to whom the delivery is to be made notes on the sheet of paper 32, through the opening 50, under their respective head ings, the date, and quantityof each item der sired, and when the person making the delivery has supplied the merchandise noted in the recorder, he partially rotates the turn knob 38 clockwise and the portion of the sheet 32 with its notationsk or order passes beyond the Ysight opening 50, and the knob 37 is then also rotated clockwise andthe roller 47 forces the previously moved section of paper 32 towards the chamber between rollers 35 and 86, as indicated in Figure 4, and hence becomes a permanent.

After these foregoing operations arerepeated for a certain period, and it is desiredr to determine what items and quantities have been supplied and the amount due, it is only necessary to unlock the recorder, or pass the end of sheet 32 with notations through the opening 49 and calculate the amount due and sever or tear said record, with notations, from the endless sheet and present the same as a bill, and on payment of the same it becomes a receipt after proper signatures and date are impressed thereon, and the recorder is enabled to be again used, as just explained, without the attention of skilled attendants.
From the foregoing description of the construction and arrangement of the parts and manner of assembling and using the same, it will be seen that all the advantages and objects recited in the statement of invention have been fully and efiiciently carried out, and whil-e lll have shown and described the preferred form of my invention, it will be manifest that many changes will readily suggest4 themselves without in way de-V parting from the spirit of the. invention or scope of the claims.
That I claim is 1. A recorder of the character described comprising a casing having a sight opening, a roller-carrying frame within said casing, said roller-carrying frame provided with a magazine roller adapted to carry a roll of material, and two pairs of alined fixed and movable rollers whose axes are in the same plane, said fixed rollers being separated and between the movable rollers and said movable rollers yieldingly forced towards said fixed rollers, each of said pairs of fixed and movable rollers adapted to receive between them and frictionally engage the material passing from the magazine roller in the path of the sight opening of the casing, and means for rotating said movable rollers.
2. A recorder of the character described comprising a casing having a sight opening,a roller-carrying frame sliding within said casing, said roller-carrying frame pro-y vided with -a fixed magazine 'roller adapted to carry. a roll of material, and two ypairs of alined fixed andmovable rollers, ysaid fixed rollers being separated and between the movable rollers and said movable rollers yieldingly forced towards saidfixed rollers, each of said pairs of fixed and movable rollers adapted to receive betwen them and frictionally engage the material passing from. the magazine roller in the path of the sight opening of the casing, and means forrotating said movable rollers.
3. Ak recorder of the character described comprising a casing having a sight opening, a roller-carrying frame within saidcasing, said roller-carrying fra'mepr'ovided with a magazine roller adapted to carry a roll of material, and two pairs ofalined fixed and movable rollers, ysaid fixed rollers being separated and between and in line with the movable rollers and springs connecting said movable rollers for yieldingly forcing said movable rollers towards said fixed rollers, each of said pairs of fixed and movable rollers adapted to receive between them and frictionally engage the material passing from the magazine roller in the path of the sight opening of the casing, and means for rotating said movable rollers.
4. A recorder ofthe character described comprising a casing having a sight opening, a roller-carrying frame sliding within and supported in said casing, said roller-carrying frame provided with a fixed magazine roller adapted to carry a roll of material, and two pairs of alined fixed and movable rollers, said fixed rollers being separated and between the movable rollers and said movable rollers .spring pressed towards said fixed rollers, each of said pairs of fixed and movable rollers adapted to` receive between them and frictionally engage the material passing from the magazine roller in the path of the sight opening of the casing, and means for rotating said movable rollers.
5. A recorder of the character described comprising a casing, a closure for said casing having a sight opening, a roller-carrying frame sliding within said casing, said rollercarrying frame provided with afmagazine roller adapted to carry a roll of material, and two pairs of alined fixed and movable rollers, said fixed rollers being lseparated and between the movable rollers and said movable rollers yieldingly forced towards said fixed rollers, each of said pairs of fixed and movable rollers adapted to receive between them and frictionally engage the material passing `from the magazine yroller in the path of the sight opening of the closure, and means for rotating said movablerollers.

A recorder of the character described comprising a casing, a closure for said casing having a sight opening, means for locking said closure to the casing, a roller-carrying `frame sliding within and supported in said casing, said roller-carrying frame provided with a fixed magazine roller adapted to carry a roll omaterial, and two pairs of alined fixed and movable rollers, said iixed rollers being separated and between the movable rollers and said movable rollers adapted to shift towards and from said ixed rollers, each of said pairs of ixed and movable rollers adapted to receive between them and rictionally engage the material passing from the magazine 4rolle: in the path of thesight opening of the closure, and means for rotating said movable rollers.

A Arecorder of .the character described comprising a casing having a sight opening, a roller-carrying frame sliding within and supported in said casing, said roller-carry ing frame provided with a magazine adapted Ito carry a roll of material, a pair of alined xed and movable rollers, said pair of ixed and movable rollers adapted to receive between them and frictionally engage the material passing from the magazine in the path oi' the sight opening of the casing, and means for rotating said movable rollers in one direction only. l

A recorder of the character described comprising a casing having a sight opening, a roller-carrying trame sliding within and supported in said casing, said roller-carrying frame provided with a magazine adapted to carry a roll of material, a pair of alined fixed and movable rollers, said pair oi tixed and movable rollers adapted to receive between them and riotionally engage the endloss sheet of material passing from the magazine in the path of the sight opening` of the casing, and means for rotating said rollers in one direction only to feed said material between said rollers continuously in one direction. y
