Be it known that I, FRANK D. Lewis, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of \Vest Orange, in the'county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new anduseful Improvements in Acoustical Apparatus, of which the following is a'speeilieation.
My invention relates broadly to acoustical apparatus and more particularly to a construction of combined phonograph repro-" ducer and recorder and electromagnetic round reproducing and recording apparatus The object of, my invention is to provide a, device for connection to a phonograph which embodies an integral loud speaker for a radio receiving apparatus and a'phonograph recording and reproducing device.

i am aware that it has been proposed here toiore to provide a tubular device which will adapt a radio receiver to the tone arm .of a phonograph to enable the sound ampii flying horn oi the phonograph to be employed in the reproduction or? radio concerts out in order to do this it has been necessary to remove the reproduccr from the phonograph tone arm and replace it by the adapter. .bi lllfi is an undesirable feature in. that a phonograph sound box is adelicate mechanism and might readily be injured in the repca ,ed rentzoval processes. It has also been proposed to provide tone arms for phonographs having a pair of extended branches, one for the phonograph sound born and the other for a telephone receiver. The existence i those branches often introduces undesirable interference and distortion in the reproduction of the sound by reason of the sympathetic vibration of the air colunms in the tubes.'
By the structure or my invention I have overcome these and other disadvantages inherent in the prior structures.
Referring to the drawings in detail, reference character 1 designates the upper portion of a phonograph. The rotatable re"- ord table is indicated by reference character 2 carrying phonograph record'fl. Swivel arm 5 is mounted on the phonograph 1 and forms the tone arm for conveying sound from the unit i i to the amplifying horn in the phonograph. In order to limit the gap between the faces of the pole pieces of electro-magnets 20 and the diaphragm, 1. provide limit stops 36 cooperating with projection 37 on casing 16. The valve is journaled at 31 and is rotated by means of stem .32 from control handle 33 which projects in the space between the electromagneticcpcrating mechanism and the phonograph sound box. In order to indicate on the outside of unit 14 the position of valve 27, I provide an indicating arm 34 adjacent the p "phcry of rotatable disk and control handle I The phonograph sound box containing diaphragm 25 is operated through lover arm pivoted at 36, the lever being controlled by stylus 37 Working upon disk record 3 during either the recording or reproducing process will be hereinafter described. Leads 38 pass through the end member 17 connecting with the elcctro-magncts 20, of the clcctro-magnctic operating mechanism. For purposes of recording incoming signaling energy upon the phonograph record, I provide a recording guide arm 39 upon the casing 16 ot the electromagnetic operating mechanism. The guide arm 39 is pivotally mounted at 40 and is under tension of a spring 41 spiralcd around the' pivot. The arm 39 has an extension 42 on one end flu-rcof in the form of a coin face adapted to co operate with a cam face 4% upon a segmental member 4-3 secured upon tho cylindrical surface or" theelcctro-magnetic operating mechanism casing 16 by means of 's 'rcws passing lbro'ugh short longitudinal slots. The member may be slid circuml'crcntially by a finger piece 45 to move cam facc ll tovurds or away from cam face 42 whereupon the position of member 39 will be changed. The ncmbcr 239 carries a stylus 46. When they member 39 is in lowered position the stylus 46 engages the usual spiralcd guide groove formed in the surface oi the record.

Fig. 8 represents the electrical connections of the unit to a radio receiving apparatus.
. \Vhere it isdesired to reproduce the incoming radio concert or lecture at some subsequent time, I position the valve .27 to convey sound waves from diaphragm LI throng port 29,-valve 27 and port 30, as represented in Fig. 4. The sound vibrations on diaphragm 21 are therefore impin ed upon diaphragm 25 actuating the sty us lever 35.
When it is desired to directly reproduce the radio lecture or concert, valve 27 is posi-- ti'oned as represented in Fig. 5, whereby port 529 communicates directly w1thport'28 and conveys the sound energy to the phonograph sound amplifying horn. \Vhen it is desired to utilize the apparatus as a phonograph, the valve 27 is positioned as represented in 1 Fig. 6 so that sound energy from diaphragm 25 is conveyed through ports 30 and 28 to the sound amplifyinghorn. It wiii be observed in all cases that the valve 2? serves to cut off those ports which are not crnpicyed in either the recording or reproducing 1. ocess, thereby eliminating interference which may arise from sympathetic vibrations.
The apparatus of this-invention may be readily attached to present phonograph installations or it may be installed when the phonograph is originally constructed, roviding a universal device for the repro uction of radio concerts or phonograph music, or the direct recording of radio concerts for subsequent phonograph reproduction.

A combined phonograph and electromagnetic sound reproducing and recording unit, comprising in combination with a phonograph record, a pivotaliy mounted tubular arm, an. electromagnetic operating mechrm'sm, a phonograph sound box having a recording and reproducing stylus adjacent thereto and. carried on one extremity of said arm, a record guiding stylus mounted ad iacent said electromagnetic operating mechanism and adapted to be raised or lowered outot or into engagement with said record,
8. a combined phonograph reproducer or recorder and an electromagnetic sound reproducing unit, comprising in combination with a :arrier for a phonograph record, a pivotally mounted sound conveying tubular a m, an elcctro-magnetic operating mechanism and a phonograph sound box having a stylus carried on one extremity of said arm,
a valve between said arm, said electro-magnetic operating mechanism and said sound box, and an adjustable balancing weight carried by the other end of said arm Wherehy said stylus may be engaged with predetermined pressure against a record on said carrier and sound generated by said electromagnetic opcrating mechanism selectivel directed by said valve to said phonograph sound box for recording or to said tubular arm,
