To. or! wlmm may consom." ,a Y 4 I R. Queso, e 'citizen of the United States, residing at "-Chicsgo, in the county of Cook vand Stute et `Ilhnois'iiave invented certain new and u'jmful improvements in Sound-Control Constructiomof which the following is a specisemis. 1 f
I l, ,n invention. relatesf to a new and improved sound control construction, and more' particuliarlyy to' u, method; for controlling sound transmission through a phonograph tone arm or similar construction.
liti
llumerous types of Jhonographs, as new produceehhave no met od of controlling the volume ot' sound transmitted from thesound arnpliiier chamber. The application ont such volume cont-rol means involves a considerable expense and large parts where passage of sound through such a large opening is to be controlled. The control of the volume in the smaller tone arm passages may be carn ried out with smaller and more simple parte.
It has now become a, common practice to use a honograph tone arm and sound amplifying chambers :for amplifying sound fromloud speaking units operated by radio` receiving apparatus. ln general, this use requires thelremoval of the usual phonograph reproducer and the connection thereto of the loud speaking unitby some suitable coupling means. This substitution requires a certain amount of time and labor and with x many forms of machines cannot be easily and sin quickly carried out. It is an" object of the present invention to provide volume control for a transmission of sound from a sound producer unit oit any sol-t to a phonograph ltone arm or .similar structure.
lt is a further object to provide a construction of this character adopted to selectively control the sound transmitted to a single tone'arm or equivalent from a plurality of sound producing mechanism such as a phono graph sound hon and a radio telephone loud.
lill
vlt is'an additional obgect to provide construction o this A character which is com posedof but iew and simple parts and winch 1s adapted for ready commercial production.
i ther'and furtherbbjects will appear as the description proceeds..
'1"`a preferred embodiment oit' the present ini 'i Vil() asection'takn on line 4 4 y Figure 5 is a perspective view of the shutter member.
The tone erin'r 11 may' be' of any usual construction and provided with a usual type of enlarged base 12 which is secured to the motor hoard of the phonograph. The pas sage in the tone arm coxmnunicates with any usual type of sound' amplifying chamber. The 'l' 13 has a portion 14`itted into and suitably secured to the small end of the tone arm il.. f
As best shown in Figure 3' the T 18 is provided with a reduced end 14: upon which is rotatably tted a connecting member 15. The threaded stud 16 extends from. a reduced enel of the T through the member 15 and the latter is held in place by means ofv the-nut 17 threaded on stud 16 andlocked in position by. a set screw 18. The rotation of the memberF 15 upon'the reduced portion of the T 'is limited by means of the screw 19 carried by member 15 and the cooperating slot 20 out in the'portion 14 as best shown in Figure 4. As shown in this figure the portion la or the'l" is provided with the lateral opening 21 `which communicates with the opening in the member 15 when that member is turned to place the sound box in the operated position.
The, elbow 36 is fitted into the member 15 andv is provided with a spiral. groove 22 xvhioh-coacts with the spring pressed ball 23 carried by the member 15. The sound box titi 2e is rotatably carried upon the end of the elbow 38. As indicated in broken lines in Figure 4.-,the mation of the sound box is limited by the 'spring pressed hall 25 cooperating with the groove Q6 in the elbovv. l
.i'he opposite and of the l 13y 1s provided i ,sesgos with o reduced portion 27 which is adapted to receive the loud speaking unit or what is known as e phone adapter' for connecting it phone unit thereto. The upper side of the "i" 13 is provided with the slot 28. The shutter 29 is fitted Within the transverse bore of the i' and is provided with the studv 30 extending through slot 28. Thus stud 30 carries the plete 31 which is pressed against the cuter surface of the by the spring 32 which latter is held in place by the heed 33 of the stud. The shutter 2t) is provided' with wine extensions 34 and 35 which :irc adaptedto close ofi the slot 28 iron] the bore of the T;
In the use of my device where n full volume of sound from the phonograph reproducer is desired, the shutter 2f) will hc placed in the position in which it is shown in Figures l 'tnd 3. The cross bore of the "i"y is then in dirct communication with the opening throughithe portion i4 of the i and with the tone arm. It' it is desired to reduce the volume of sound the shutter is moved to the ieft by pushing the head $551 ot' the stud 30 to the left. Any desired portion of the opening through portion 11i oi the T may thus be cut ofi from con'ununic.ition with the sound hon.
If it is desired to use the tone arm and i in connection with e loud speaking unit such unit is fitted to the reduced portion 27 oi" the T, :is indicated in broken lines in Figure l. it' it is then desired to tansmit the full volume from the ioud speaking unit to the tone arm 1l the shutter 29 is moved fully to the left to the dotted line position shown in Figure 3. it it is desired to `modify the volume of sound transmitted from the ioud speaking unit the shutter 29 may he placed in any desired intermediate position.
Tvif/hen using the construction in connection with the ioud speaking unit, the sound box may be swung hack @here the tone erin, the screw i9 and siot Q0 cooperating to iimit this movement. The sound box, eihorv and connector, as shown, are snitabie 'for use with both zigzag and h 'iil-and-dnle records. 'iii/"hen the parts are in the position. shown in Figures l end 2, zig-zeg records are played. iifith the parte turned in the 4tion shown in Fi ure in hrohen iines, hi'ih and-dale records 1ere played. 7.
My sound control construction is adapted to uiiy trsnsi'nit sound from either the ,sound box or ioud speaking unit or to modify sound transmitted from either unit. rfins construction readily adapts a pho nogreph to use as o radio phone loud speekcr and thus materially increases its utiiity.
l have illustrated one preferred form of iny invention but contemplate such changes :and modifications come within the spirit and scope oi the appended ciaiins.
ciaiin: 1. A sound control' construction compris4 arm, ineens-for connecting :i sound box to one end of seid T, the other end of the heingg adapted for connection to nA 10nd .gushing unit, and ny siiding shutter fitted into theTand adapted to selectively cut oii' connection from either end. of tie to the tone arm. l
2. A sound control construction compris ing e. tone erin, a T connected. to said tiene :ii-m, ineens for connectinge sound hor; to one end of said T, the other end of the E being adapted for connection to a ioud speaking unit, a sliding shutter 'iitted into the T and adapted to seiectiveiy-out oi" connection from either end of the to the tone erin, and an operating member connected to the shutter and enteniingl through siot 3. A sound controi. construction comprising a tone erm, a i connected to said tone arm, ineens for connectinge sound box' to one end of said T, the other end of thefi'A being adapted for connection .te :i ioi'id speaking unit, s sliding .shutter .itted iii" the "i" and adapted 'to seiectivciy out o-, connection from either end oi the is" to the tone erin, a slot in the "iu, an operiing inem her for the shutter extending through he slot, end/wings on the shutter adopted to close the slot throughout the range ori more of the shutter.
