Be it known that I, FRANK Q. GA'rns, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Enlargement Printers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in enlargement printers and has particular reference to a printing machine wherein a picture is projected. into a frame exposed upon the sensitized paper so as to present the appearance of a framed picture when the. sensitized paper is developed.
Another object is to produce a machine wherein a plurality of pictures may be projected upon a single piece of sensitized paper and when developed will have the picture centered within a frame also exposed, upon the same sensitized paper.
Another object is to produce a device of this character which is simple in construction and therefore cheap to manufacture.
A further object is to produce a device which may be employed by the average studio craftsman without requiring any particular training,

In producing enlargements Where several pictures are to be projected upon the same piece of sensitized paper it has been customary to mask the entire sheet with the exception of that portion to be exposed and when it is desired to take a picture having the appearance of being in a frame it has been customary to first frame a picture, photograph the same and then project it onto the enlargement paper. This is an expensive process and also requires considerable time. i
Applicant has therefore devised a machine whereby the frame simulating a' picture frame may be printed upon the paper and afterwards a picture projected therein, both exposures being made previous to developing the paper.
In the accompanying drawings wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 5 designates a baseboard tothe sides of which are secured angle members 6 and 7. Slidably positioned upon this base-board 5 and retained thereon by the angle members 6 and 7, is acalrrier 8. This carrier is locked in adjusted position by a screw 9 passing through the angle member 7 and engaging the top of the carrier (see Figure IX).

having their lower extremities pivoted to the carrier An operating link is shown at 19 to which is secured a handle 21 which permits the plate 17 to be raised or lowered as shown in dotted lines in Figure III. The sensitized paper a fragment of which is shown at 22 has its opposite end held to the platten by spring clips 23.
A frame carrier 24 is provided with hinges 26 which are secured to a support 27 and which has its lower extremity secured to the rear edge of the base 5. These hinges 26 are preferably of the spring type so as to cause the frame carrier to be elevated to the dotted line position of Figure II when the retaining springs 29 mounted upon the carrier 8 are released from their engagement with the frame holder.
A mask 31 is pivoted beneath the frame holder 8 and is moved through the medium of a lever 32 as will be later described. Referring now to Figures I and IV, it will be noted that a frame 33 having angles 3d and 36 attached to its sides is positioned within an opening cut in the carrier 8. This frame is similar to an ordinary printing frame with the exception that an additional slot 37 is provided near the bottom of the frame. This slot is adapted to accommodate a glass plate 38 to the underside of which'is secured a negative 39.
The glass plate 38 carries an opaque surface as shown at 41 and 4-2, while the negative 39 carries an exposure representing a picture frame as shown at 43.
Another mask is shown at i l, which mask is employed when the photograph is being projected by the enlarging camera. This mask is is positioned as shown in Figure I and held in place by an inner frame l6, having the customary springs l? and 48 for retaining the same within the frame. A spring latch is secured to the rear of the track 11 and comprises an angle member 4L9 having a detent 51 normally. held downwardly by a spring. 52 and adapted to enter an opening 53 spaced at suitable intervals in the slider 12. This latch is best illustrated in Figure V II.
By referring to Figure VIII, it will be.
seen that the sensitized paper 22 has printed thereon a plurality of frames designated by the letter A, within which are printed pictures designated by the letters B, C and I).
The operation of my device is as follows Assuming that the device is assembled as shown in Figure I, the retaining springs 29 are released which permits the frame carrier 24: to automatically move to the dotted line position of Figure II. A sheet of sensitized paper is then placed upon the platten 14: and the ends held by the clips 23. The
latch detent 51 is then raised and the platten as a whole is slid either to the right or the left a desired distance. The frame carrier is then returned to its overlying position of Figure I, and the frame 33 is placed within the frame carrier with only the glass plate 38 and the negative 39 therein. The
lever 21 is now operated so as to move the plate 17 into contact with the under surface of the platten, which action pushes the platten and sensitized paper into intimate contact with the negative 39. By now bringing a light near this negative,.the rays will pass through the clear portions of the glass v38, through the negative 39 and cause a frame to be exposed upon the sensitized paper. The platten is again moved and the same operation repeated, printing as many frames upon the sensitized paper as is de sired.
After the frames have been printed, the
negative 39 and its glass plate 38 are removed from the printing frame 33 and the mask 4% inserted in the frame, together with the inner frame l". At this time the lever 32 is rotated so as to bring the mask 31 beneath the opening of the mask l i and the picture to be projected through the mask 44 is focused upon the mask 31. This permits the proper fooussing and position of the picture within the opening of the mask 44 and after this hasbeen accomplished the mask 38 is moved out of the path of the projected picture and the proper exposure made. The platten is now moved until the next exposed frame is beneath the mask 44 and the second picture projected thereon proceeding in the manner above described.
Subsequent pictures may be focused and projected into their respective frames thus permitting a number of exposures being made upon asingle piece of paper, after which the paper is removed and developed in the customary manner.
It is of course obvious that the negative 39 may carry any suitable design together with the frame which would provide a background or shaded area between the exposed frames, thus adding to the value of the developed print. This however is a matter entirely within the jurisdiction of the operator.
It is to be understood that the form of my invention herewith shown and described is to be taken as a preferred example of the same, and that various changes in the shape,
size and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claims.
Having thus described my invention, I claim 1. In a photographing apparatus, a base, a carrier slidable on said base, means for locking said carrier in adjusted position, a slotted track positioned 011 said carrier, a platten pivotally mounted on said track and dapted to be moved laterally with respect to said carrier, means for locking said platten in adjusted position, a frame carrier pivoted to said base and adapted to be brought into parallel relation with said platten, a printing frame removably positioned within said frame carrier, and means for holding a negative in said frame flush with the bottom thereof.
