Application filed October 1 To all whom it may concern 1 Be it known that I, ORVILLE F. SHA'rrUcK, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Indianapolis, county of Marion, and State of Indiana, have invented a certain new an useful Door Carrier; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which like numerals refer to like parts.
The object of this invention is to improve the construction and operation of means for mounting a door'for a structure, and a carrier for releasably engaging the door, detaching it, moving it laterally to another position and replacing it in closed position.
The invention is made with particular reference to lumber dry kilns and other structures, such as shops and garages, where a plurality ofdoors is required for a plurality of door openings, and it is necessary that each door may not only be opened but moved laterally out of the way of the door opening, or moved to another door opening. To that end a single track rail is secured to the structure above the plurality of door-openings, and a single carrier or frame is adapted to travel on sald track and pick up any door and move it away and replace it in doorclosing position.
One feature of the invention consists in improved means for suspending the door 1n closing position so it will hug tightly to the wall of the building, by securing to the top of the door a plurality of door hanger fixtures, preferably in loop form, each'adapted to engage an outward leg andupwardly inclined hanger hook on the track fixture, which is in the form of a plain arm of a width appreciably less than the width of the door hanger, so as to avoid any niceties and difficulties in closing the door and removing the same. Heretofore the .fixtures for accomplishing this work have been complicated and difficult to operate because they were close fittin and in fact required an accurate and wedging fit that made it difli cult to close a door and even to open it and required great care.

Heretofore, the door lifting fixtures also have been so made asto require relatively 7 close fittingv and great pains in operating the same so as to cause said fixtures to properly cooperate.
VViththese and the otherimprovements herein set forth and claimed, the operation of such door carriers and the removal,*t ransportation and replacement of the doors, especially metal doors, is greatly facilitated. The door is picked up and supported by lifting arms 50 which are fulcrumed between the parallel side bars 40 of the carrier frame at 51, as seen in Fig. 2, and each lifting arm has at its upper end a finger 53 projecting rearwardly and adapted to be inserted under the lift plate 28 in a groove 54. A lever 55 is pivoted to the upper end of the lifting arm 50 at 56 and to the upper end of a triangular frame 57. This frame consists of three rods, the upper one horizontal and the two side rods extending outwardly and inwardly and slidably connected with the vertical rod 45. There is also a lever 60 pivoted to the upper endof said triangular frame at 61 and to the parallel side bars at 62 slightly above the pivotal point 51 of the lifting arm 50. Vith this construction, when the triangular frame 57 is forced downward from the position shown in Figs. 1 and 2, you can lift the door off the hanger hooks 23 upwardly and outwardly to the dotted line position shown in Fig. 2. he downward movement or operation of said triangular frame is effected by a hand lever 65 which is'pivoted at one end at 66 to the lower part of the carrier frame and between the ends of said lever 65, it is connected bythe connecting bars 67 with the lower end of the triangular frame 57. The downward movement of the hand lever 65 will cause a downward moveient of the triangular frame 57 to bring it into the dotted line position shown in Fig. 2, and that will lift the door off itssupporls, and then the door will be supported by the carrier on the track rail 16, and the door can then be moved laterally on said track rail to either side as far as desired.

It is to be noted that the hanger hooks 23 are single arms projecting upwardly and outwardly from the fixed part of the structure and are relatively narrow, while the hanger bars 34; and 80 are very Wide, several times the width of the hooks 23. Likewise the recess 54 in the lower edge of the lift plate 29, see Fig. 3, is very wide, while the upper end of the lifting arm 50 is relatively very narrow, as compared with the width of the recess 54: in the plate 29. Likewise there is a long recess 81 in the upper end of the lifting arm 50. This is particularly important in metal doors which expand materially and warp under the influence of the heat and coldand of wooden doors which are affected materially by moisture and dryness.

A modified arrangement is shown in Figs. 7 and 8, relative to wooden doors on lift plates 28 being provided with a horizontally rearwardly extending plate 30, and there is a hanger strap which at itsupper end is securedto the hanger fixture 31 andplate 28 by a bolt and nut 86. The rear, end of the hanger strap 85 is bifurcated, as seen in Fig. 8, and the twolegs thereof are secured to the rear part of the door by the-bolts 29. This makes a very strong construction for mounting said fixtures on the woodendoors;
The hanger hooks 23 are preferably inte-' gral with thetrack fixtures 17, as shown, in; order thatthe relation between the hook 23 and the railf16 may be at all times maintained. While the hook 23 may be separate fromthe track fixture 17,.that would render it more difficult to maintain the exact relationship between the hook23 and the track rail 16. Unless this relationship be maintained, the hanger bars 34iat the top of the doors would not'always register with the books 23 in closing the door. Also in this device there is a fixed relation between recess 54 in the bottom of the lift plates 28 and the track -16and hanger hooks .23, so that the carrier can always replace and remove the hanger bars 3d on and from the hanger hooks 23. This fixed relation is due to plates being fastened to the hanger bars 34.
The invention claimed is: i
1. The combination wi 11 a structure having a door opening, a removable door, a track extending horizontally above the door opening, and a detachable car'riage'trave-lling or. said trackand adapted to pick up the door and support it while open and return it to closing position,- of relatively wide hanger bars secured to the top of the door, and relatively narrow upwardly and outwardly ex tending hanger hooks secured to the structure in position to receive the hanger bars and support the door, substantially as set forth.
2. Apparatus substantially as set forth in claim 1, with track fixtures secured to the structure for supporting the track, and said hanger hooks being rigidly secured to said track fixtures.
3. The combination with a structure having a door opening, a removable door, a track extending horizontally above the door opening, and a detachable carriage travelling on said track and adapted to pick up the door and support it while open and return it to closing position, hanger fixtures secured to the top of the door and each iaving upwardly extending sides and a relatively long hanger bar extending between the sides thereof to form a loop-like hanger fixture, and relatively narrow upwardly and outwardly extending hanger hooks secured to the structure in position to receive and support the hanger bars of the door, substantially as set forth.
l. Apparatus substantially as set forth in claim 3, with the bottom surface of the hanger bars being flat and upwardly and outwardly inclined like the hanger hooks.
Apparatus substantially as set forth in claim 3, with the hanger fixture having a bottom plate adapted to rest upon the door, and means for securing it on the top of the door so as to prevent rocking displacement on the door.
6. The combination with a structure having a door opening, a removable door, a track extending horizontally above the door opening, a. carriage traveling on said track and having an upwardly and inwardly extending lifting arm for picking up a door, means secured to the structure for supporting the door when closed, and means secured to the top of the door for engaging said door supporting means, of means secured to the door to be engaged by the lifting arm of the carrier which is relatively wider than the lifting arm of the carrier, whereby the door may be readily and safely engaged by the lifting arm of the carrier Without taking particular pains in effecting the operation.
7. The combination with a structure having a door opening, a removable door, a track extending horizontally above the door opening, a carriage traveling on said track and having two upwardly and inwardly ex tending lifting arms for picking up the door, means secured to the structure for supporting the door when closed, and hanger means secured to the top of the door for engaging the door supporting means on the structure, of lift plates secured to the front part of the door in position for said lifting arms'to engage the lower edge thereof and said plates having a relatively long recess in the lower edge thereof for receiving the liftin arms.
8. Apparatus substantially as set forth in claim 7 with the hanger means upon the door and said lift plates being secured together.
9. Apparatus substantially as set forth in claim 7, with said lift plates extending above the door, means for securing the hanger means to the portion of the lift plate above the door, and means extending over the top and behind the door and rigidly connected with the hanger means and plate to resist anyrocking movement of the hanger means on the door.

Apparatus substantially as set forth 111 said lift plate projecting underthetop plate of the angle iron, and the hanger means be ing located upon the angle iron, and bolts extending through the extension from the lift plate, the angle iron, and the bottom of the hanger means for securing'them rigidly together.
11. The combination with a structure having a door opening, a removable door, a track extending horizontally above the door opening, and a detachable carrier travelling on said track and having two upwardly and inwardly extending lifting arms for picking up the door, of relatively wide hanger bars secured to the top of the door, relatively narrow upwardly and outwardly extending hanger hooks secured to the structure in po-' sition to receive the hanger bars and'sup port the door, and lift plates'secured to the upper front part of the door and having on their lower edges relatively long recesses in position to receive said lifting arms, the length of said recesses being relatively greater than the thickness. of said lifting arms, whereby the apparatus may be satisfactorily operated without taking pains for accurate operation thereof.
12. Apparatus substantially as set forth in claim 11, with said lift plates and hanger means being rigidly secured together.
13. The combination with a structure havopenings extending hori ing a series of door zontally, a removable door for each opening, a track extending series of door openings, and a detachable carriage travelling on ing arm adapted to pick up any door and remove it from its door opening and move it laterally to some other position and return it to door closing position, of a pair of relatively narrow upwardly and outwardly extending hanger hooks secured to the structure above each door opening, a pair of relatively wide hanger means secured to the top claim 7, with an angle iron on the top" and rear side of the door, an extension from' horizontally above the said track and having an upwardly and inwardly extending lift-'- of each door in position to engage and be lifting arm, whereby with said carriage said supported by said hanger hooks when the doors may be easily and rapidly manipudoor is closed, and a lift plate secured to the lated without requiring great pains in the '10 front side of each door and having a recess operation.
