One of the principal objects of the present invention is to provide a supporting and locking mechanism for drop bottom doors of freight cars wherein the locking mechanism consists primarily of a' bracket, an
outer plate, av hook pivotally supported between the bracket and outer plate, retaining means also pivotally supported between the bracket and the plate for holding the hook in its locked position, and means for securing the supporting mechanism to the car body.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain new and novel constructions and combination of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the claims.

Referring now to the locking and supporting mechanism, a hook member such as 12 is pivoted on the side sill for each of the members 9 to engage the loop ends 11, and is arranged to swing longitudinally of the car or at right angles to the swing of the web of the channel 2, to simplify the problem of'removal for repairs. A hook retaining cam or dog 15 is pivoted as at 16 to the bracket 14c to prevent the accidental release of the hook 12. When this cam or dog is rotated about its pivot 16in one direction, it allows the hook 12 to be 'driven out of It will be understood that,

When this hook is in position beneath the projection 11 for supporting the door, the dog 15 may be rotated in the proper direction to engage the back of the hook and hold it and the door in their locked position. An outer or retaining plate 17 may be applied over the hook 12 and cam 15 of each bracket, the rivets coincident with the pivot points 13 and 16 as well as an additional rivet 18 passing through this plate and through the bracket and the channel 2, thereby economically tying all of these parts together and producing a compact arrangement and one especially suited to the rough service, to
which the same will be subjected. The bracket 14: may also have integrally formed spacing lugs 19 formed at the rear thereof to form spacers between the channel and the main plate of the bracket.
It is to be noted that the door falls approximately on a line with the outer edge of the flange of the channel 2, the extension 11 lying outside of the lines of the door and outside of the lines of the channel 2. The hook 12 also lies outside of the lines of the door and outside of the lines of the channel 2 but within the lines of the projection 11, thereby allowing free movement of the hook and free movement of the door excepting when the hook is in the projection 11. This permits the maximum of thedoor opening, and it will be seen that the door is also supported from the two sill members, namely the center sill and the side sill.
It will also be seen that the locking and supporting mechanism may be applied as a unitary structure to the side sills of freight cars, and necessitating the drilling of but three holes in the side sill when the locking mechanism is applied.
Seats to be engaged by the hooks other than the form shown by the projection 11 ma be used if so desired.
From the foregoing it will be seen that I have designed a locking and supporting mechanism which may be applied as a unit; which is relatively cheap to manufacture, and which may be quickly operated, it simply being necessary to throw the dog in one direction and force the hook from its seat, while to support and lock the door, it is only necessary to force the door to a closed position and, after the hook has engaged the seat, the dog will then be thrown to tightly jam and lock the hook in this locked posi tion.
Many slight changes might be made without in any way departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is In a door device for railway cars, the combination with a car framing including side and center sills, the former having an outwardly directed flange, of a door hingedly connected to said center sill, a portion of said door being adapted to underlie the flange of said side sill, a hook for holding said door in closed position, and a. bracket member for pivotally supporting said hook, said member including a plate having an offset portion engaging the web of said sill thereby to space the plane of movement of said hook clear of said flange.
