PATENT OFFICE.
oANDIDo TORRES.,` or ARDMORE, SOUTH DAKOTA.
COMBINATION LIFE BUOY AND SWIMMING DEVICE.
Appncation mea August 20,1925. serial No. 51,339.
T all 'whom t may concern Be 1t known that I, lCANDIDO TORRES, a
citizen of Mexico, residing at Ardmore, in the county of Fall River and State of South Dakota, have invented certain new an useful Improvements in Combinationl Life Buoy and Swimming Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in swimming apparatus, and it is the principal object of the invention to provide a combination life-buoy and bathing or swimming device which may also conveniently be used for teaching` swimming eto.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character which is extremely simple and which can be readily attached to a person.
A further object of the invention is. the provision of an apparatus of this kind al lowing the free use of the legs and adapted to keep a person above water.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of an apparatus of this type having a Jair of side wings and o eratinof 23 C 7 Y D means therefor.
rfhese and other objects and advantages of the invention will become more fully known as the description thereof proceeds, and will then be more specifically defined in the ap` pended claims.
In the accompanying drawing, forming a .iaterial part of this disclosure:
Fig. 1 is a top plan view of a combination life-buoy and swimming device constructed according to the present invention.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof, partly 1n section on line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Fig. 3 is a sectional detail view of a clamp art.
p The device comprises two floats 1() and `11 supported on a platform '12, having a front board 13 having a centrally located eye 14 to which are pivotally secured, intermediate their ends, by means of a pin 15, two arms 16 and 17, having at their front ends glove-like, hand receiving members 18 and 19, supported on arms 20', while the rear ends of the arms 16 and 17, are segmentally formed and provided with teeth 2O and 2l, adapted to engage or mesh with teeth of gears 22 and 23 on stub shafts 24, to which are attached bars 25, on lateral wings 26, the opposite ends of which have springs 27 attached thereto, the other ends of which are attached to angular brackets 28 engaging at their apeXes over the neckshaped ends 29, of floats 10` and 11, and adapted to be pressed together at their lower ends, one of which carries a spacer 80.
A belt 81 has forked or `spaced ends equipped with buckles 32, adapted to be engaged by perforated straps 33,.to attach the device to a person.
The operation of my device Will be entirely clear from the above description, and need not further be explained. A vperson using the apparatus, will assume the` position shown in broken lines in Figure'2 and will be protected against submersion by the floats, while he may conveniently make the customary swimming motions with hishands and while his legs are unhampered.
It Will be evident that many changes may be made in my apparatus, described and shown, as an example, without departure from the spirit and principle involved.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Let ters Patent, is:
1. A combination life-buoy and swimming apparatus comprising a: pairy of floats, a platform carrying said floats, a pair of movable arm guides pivotally secured to said platform, means on said guides for receiving the hands of a person, a pair of wings, means for transmitting the movements of said arm guides to said Wings, and a means for securing said apparatus on a person.
2. In an apparatus of the class described,v a pair of floats, a platform for carrying said floats, a front board, a pair of arms pivotally attached intermediate their ends to said platform, rhand guides at one end of said arms, the opposite end segmentally shaped Vand provided with teeth, a pair of gears adapted to 4mesh with said teeth, a pairv of wings towhich the motionv of said gears is transmitted', springs for controlling said wings, and a means for holding the parts in their relative positions.
3. An apparatus of the class described comprising a pair of floats, a platform carrying saidioats, a pair of wings, means for Y operating said Wings, springs for hunting the operation of said wings,a nd end clamps for holding sald oats on saldplatform to which said springs are attached, and a belt 5 carrying said floats, Wings, means fonlny tatng the arm motion of a'swlnmer, means for translnlttlng sald motlons to sald Wlngs,
b and end clamps to which said splings'al'e secured, each having two brackets, and means for clampngthe neok parts of said floats to said frame.
w Iniestnlony whereof I have axed my signature;
Y CANDIDO TORRES
