CLARENCE O. BUNNELL, OE VANCOUVER, WASHINGTON.
NOTE CASE,
Application filed April 16, 1923. Serial No. 632,445.
To (ZZZ 107mm it may concern:
Be it known that I, CLARENCE O. BUN- NELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Vancouver, in the county 01": Clarke and State of Washington, have invented a new and useful Note Case, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to note cases for use by civil engineers and others who require to make notes in the field or other places exposed to weather.
The object of the invention is to provide a device of this character in which provision is made for carrying in a comparatively small container ample material for making numerous notes and which may be so fed as to expose a portion only to be written on and after this exposed portion has been used, it is fed into the interior of the device where it is protected and another portion presented in its place ready for use.
Another object is to provide a device of this character equipped with a removable outer casing to protect the paper carrying member from rain and the like and which has an opening provided with a closure adapted to overlie the exposed paper of the inner member to provide for writing thereon, and which has moans for' feeding the paper under said openin With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the coinbination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that ch'anges'in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed may be made without departing from the spirit or sacrific' ing any of the advantages of the claimed invention.
In the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 represents a perspective view of the outer casing constituting a part of this invention detached.
Fig. 2 is a similar view of the inner casing, and
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section showing the inner casing arranged within the outer casing.
In the embodiment illustrated, the casing constituting this invention comprises an in-' ner member 1 and an outer member 20 adapted for cooperative use when it is desired to protect the inner member, h
The inner member 1 comprising shell like container here shown with rounded ends 2 and 3 and having a removable side closure 1. This shell is provided in one face with transversely extending longitudinally spaced slots 5 and 6 and in its opposed face with similar slots 7 and 8, the slot 6 being arranged near one end of the shell and the slot 7 near the other end. These slots are designed to provide for the threading therethrough of paper strips 9 and 19 carried by cartridges within the shell and which will be hereinafter more fully described.
Any desired number of cartridges may be mounted in the shell 1, six being here shown and numbered 10, 11, 12, 13, 14 and 15 respectively.
These cartridges are arranged in pairs within the shell, one being designed to receive the paper strip from the other, the cartridges 11 and 15 being cooperatively arranged in the shell with the paper strip 9 fed from cartridge 11 through the slots 5 and 6 back into the shell and onto cartridge 15 so that; the turning of the cartridge 15 in one direction will operate to wind up the paper strip 9 thereon and if for any reason it is desired to reverse the strip, the cartridge 11 is turned in the opposite direction. These cartridges are provided at one end with pintles as 16 to be journaled in one side wall of the shell while their opposed ends have key slots 17 to receive an operating key 18 which projects beyond the side wall of the casing 01 shell into convenient position for actuation by the user.
The cartridges 10 and let shown clearly in Figs. 2 and 3 are designed to cooperate, 10 being the empty or receiving cartridge and 14: the full or delivery cartridge, the paper 19 passing through the slots 8 and 7 outside the shell over the face thereof and engaged with the cartridge 10 onto which it is designed to be wound.
The cartridges 12 and 13 are supply cartridges designed to be substituted for the other when needed.
From the above description it will be obvious that this device is reversible having presented on either face a paper strip to be written on, the strip being exposed at one end on one face and at the other end on the other face, so that when the shell is turned over sideways a support for the hand is afforded during the writing operation. Each strip adapted to be fed overtli'e sup porting surface one as one side and one on the other so that when one strip has been utilized to its full extent, the device may be reversed and the strip on the other side written on, and so that a writing surface will be presented no matter which side is turned up.
The outer casing 20 which is shaped to conform to the paper carrying shell 1 is open at one side to permit the shell to be inserted and in its opposed side has openings 21 and 22*to receive the operating keys 18 on the cartridges 11 and 15, while the closure for the open side is equipped with similar openings arranged to receive the actuating keys of cartridges l-O and 14.
This casingQO is provided in its opposed faces at opposite ends with openings and 24 extending transversely across the casing and of considerably less size than the exposed strip of paper over which it is designed to overlie so that said ipaper will be exposed therethrough =for writing when'the closure 25 is in openposition as shown in Fig. 1.
These openings and 21 are preferably provided with metal. reinforcements or frames as 26-and=the closures 25 therefor are preferably spring operated to hold them in closed position.
[From the above description it will be obvious that the inner member 1 may be removed from the casing 20' and used independently thereof or it maybe inserted in said:casing=and iisedrequally"well, the casing 20 operating to protect-the paper strips 9 and-1 9 when the'closures 25 are closed so that-the device may bensed in bad weather and which will-be protected from dirt and the like whenthe casing-20 is employed.
It will be obvious that this device maybe of any suitable or desired size,-being preferably of a size to be carried in the 'users pocket and by mounting the paper strips on rolls or cartridges as herein shown, ample material will beprovidetl while occupying a minimum amount of space.
It is-of course understood that this device may be used for various purposes and my own, I
is not to be limited to tlieuse of .lield engineers.
Various changes in the form, shape, proportion and other minordetails of construction may be made without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the claimed invention.
one face of said shell having transversely extending longitudinally spaced slots and its opposed face provided with similar slots out of register with the'first-i'nentioned slots, papercarrying cartridges mounted in said inner member-and arranged in pairs, one to receive the paper strips fed fromthe other,
the paper strips so fed being threaded -tli1OUQliil19 slots in the shell, said cart-ridges having keys at one end for turning'thcn'i,
'tliQ outer casing being openat one side to receive tlieinner shell and provided in its opposed sides with'openings to receive the operating keys of the cartridges, a closure for said open side equipped with similar cartridge-reeeiving-openings,said outer casingbeing provided in its opposed faces at opposite ends with openings to overlie the exposed portion of the paper strip tozperinit writing on said-strip through said-opening.
2.111 a device of the class described, a
shell having transversely extending longi- =tudinally spaced slots in its opposed faces, 'longitudrnally spaced paper-carrying rolls mountedin said shell iii position to feed the paper thereon =thr u said slots on opposite faces of the shell without interfering with each other, and-receiving rolls mounted in the shell at the opposite ends thereof for connection of the strips'fed from the supply rolls said receiving rolls having actuating keys for turniug thein to wind up the strips thereon from the supply roll.
In testiniony that I claimthe-foregoing as have hereto aliixed my signature.
CLARENCE o. .BUNN'ELL.
