CARGO BINDER.
Application filed January 2, 1925. Serial No. 206.
To @ZZ whom @'25 may concern."
Be it known that I, Maz; S'rUnM, Jr., a citizen of the United `Sitatcs, residing at rfv J- f- .ixeypoiu in the county or Monmouth and State 'of N ew Jersey, and useful lnfiprovements in Cargo Binders, of which the following is a speciiication..
This invention relates to braces'for'holding articles against movement when loaded in freight cars and the like, the general object of the invention being to provide means whereby each brace-can be wedged crosswise in the car.V i 1 j f.,
Another obj ecty of the invention is to l'provide detachable means on the braces for engaging thevwheelsof a motor vehicle or the like.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the severalparts,to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
In describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure 1 is a horizontal sectional view through a car showing the invention as being used to hold a motor vehicle against movement.
Figure 2 is a section on line 2-2 of Figure 1. I
`Figure 3 is a section on 'line 3--3 of Figure 1.v
Figure 4 is a section on Yline lr-4 of Figure 1.'l
Figure 5 is a perspective View showing one end of one ofthe braces with the wedge plate thereon. Figure 6 is an end view threaded members.
Figure 7 is a view showing a slight modification.
As shown in these views, the brace members 1 are made in the form of rods' which extend transversely across the car, one end of each rod having a projection 2 thereon which is rounded and the other end having a threaded socket therein to receive a threaded shaft E which is formed of one. of the with a rounded end 1 and said shaft is provided with a nutshaped head 5 which is located between the threaded part and the rounded part 11 and which is provided with holes 6 so that a lrounded recesses have inventedV new v,
-tents of the car-from threaded shaft 17, the
which engages a threaded socket in an arm i shaft can braces can rod can be inserted for holding a handle for shaft. AThe rounded ends of and et' are adapted to engage 7 formed in plates S which are provided with spurs 9 for penetrating turning 'the the parts 2 the side Ywalls of a car A. Thus when the shaft 3 of each brace member-is rotated by its head 5 the' brace will be lengthened so that the lplates 8 will be jammed against the side walls of the car with the spurs enterv ing the walls so that supported transversely of the car.l Thus the braces can be usedV forforming partitions in a 'car `and thus prevent the cargo or consliding about therein. Figure `1 shows the braces being used to prevent` the chassis of a motor vehicle, shown at C, from moving about in the car. 1n this case a pair of arms 11 are placed on each brace with the outery end of each arm having'a curved part 12 which is provided with a curved channel therein for receiving a portion of the tire of the wheel of the vehicle. an opening for receiving a part of the brace and the arm is fastened inadjustedposition on the brace by a set bolt 13. Thus when the braces are put in position with the channel shaped parts of the arms engaging the wheels of a vehicle, as shown in Figure 1,v the vehicle is held 'against-movement in the car. Y Y
In order to strengthen the loraces IV may .provide them with stays 14, the outer ends ofV staysr being hookedinto openof each set ings 15 made in the plates 8 and their inner ends are pivoted to a bracket 16 which has a socket therein for receiving one end of a threaded part of 18 which has an opening therein through which a brace member is passed.` The shaft 17 is provided with ahead 19 so that the be turned to tighten the stays.
a modification in which the brace member is formed of two sections 1 and 1 with one section having a threaded socket therein for receiving the threaded part of the other section.
From the foregoing it will be seen that Iliave provided braces which can be wedged transversely in a freight car or other vehicle to support the cargo against movement. The be easily and quickly set up and taken down without damage to the car or Figure 7 shows K its contents.
Each arm is provided with the brace will be firmly It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of my invention Will be readily apparent.
I desire it to be understood that I may make changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the ,several parts, provided that such changes fall Within the scope of the appended claims.
lVhat I claim is zl. A device of the class described coinprising a rod having a threaded socket .in one end thereof, a threaded member engag- .ing said socket, said member and nod each having its outer end rounded, plates having recesses therein for receiving the rounded ends, a nut-shaped head on `the threaded member for permitting` it to be turned, stay rods detachably connected with the plates, a part to which the inner ends .of the sta.;7 rods are connected and means for adj ustably connecting said part to the rod.
2. A device of the class described coinprising a rod lhaving a threaded socket in one end thereof, a threaded member engaging said socket, said member and rod each having its outer end rounded, plates having recesses therein for receiving the rounded ends, a nut-shaped head on the threaded member for per nitting it to be turned, stay rods detachably connected with the plates, a part to which the inner ends of the stay rods are connected, means for adjustably connecting said part to the rod, such means comprising an arm removably attached to the rod and having` a threaded socket, a threaded member engaging the socket and the part to Which the stay rods are attached and a nut-like head on the threaded men'iber. l
3. A device oi the class described coinprising a telescopic member, plates at the ends of the member, means for lengthening the member to Wedge the plates against the Walls of a carrier, an arm carried by said member and a curved part on the outer end of the arm having,- a channel therein for receiving portion of a Wheel.
In testimony whereof I aiX my signature,
MAX srunia, n..
