T0 all whom tm/zy concern:
Be it knownv that l, HARVEYGODFREY, a citizen of the United States,` residing. at
Newport, in the county of! Campbell andl State ofl Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Impro'f'einents in-Automatic' Gas Guti-Offs, of.`wliich the following-is a specification. t
This invention relates to device' for con"- trolling'the supply of'gas, toautomatically shut off the flow 4in event oftheV pressure being reduced from any cause to a degree siniicient to extinguish the iiame ofthefhurners, and thus prevent the flow of' through vunlighted.burners When the pressure-isili. sumed, ,and for 'one ofI itsY objects to l iniprove and simplify the construction andincrelase the utility and eliiciency ofdevices ofiL this character.

but at the return movement ot the plate 18 caused by the reduction of the temperature, the point 21 will pick up the trip iinger and swing it against the stop pin 23 and actuate the trip plate 28, as hereafter explained.
Pivoted at to the wall 14 ot the easing, is a lever arm 36, and pivoted at 37 to the arm 36 is a. stop latch 38 having a weighted end 39. i
rlhe terminal ot the member 38 is provided with a bearing roller 40 in position to simultaneously engage the inclined tace ot the nose portion 29 of the member 28 and the inclined `tace ot a projection on the bracket 26.
The operating arm 41 of the controlling valve 11 is provided with a weight 42, and is coupled to the lever arm 3G by a rod 43. A lifting ring 44 is attached to the lever arm 36.
With an apparatus thus constructed and installed, the lever arm 36 is elevated tiret manually by the lifting ring 44 to open the valve 11 to permit the tiow ot gas to the burners 12, and the burners lighted. r1`his movement of the arm 36 causes the swinging stop latch 38--39 to pass over both oit the nose portions 29 and 45 ot the plate 18 and bracket 2G, and assume the position shown in full lines in Figures 1 and 2.
lVhen the heat from the burners expands the element within the tube 23, the plate 18 is tilted on its pivot 17 as before described and causes the reduced terminals 21 to be .depressed int-o the position shown in full lines in Figure 2, this movement causing the point 21 to swing the trip linger 32- 31 on Vits pivot, but without effecting the trip plate 28.
The supporting plate 18 will retain the position shown in `full lin-es in Figure 2 s o long as the burners are lighted and radiate sntlieient heat to maintain the element within the tube 23 expanded.
Then the burners are turned ott, the cooling ot the element within the tube 23 will cause it to contract and move the center ot gravity to the other' side o't the pivot 17 and tilt the plate 18 and elevate the reduced portion 21 and canse it to engage the end 32 of the trip linger and canse the latter in turn to engage the piu 33 and swing the trip plate 28 on its pivot 27 and depress theI nose portion 29 and cause the end ot the trip plate 28 to engage the roller 40 and detach the latch element 38--39 Yfrom engagement with the nose portion 45 of the bracket 2G, and thus release the lever arm 36 and eorrespondingly release the weighted valve lever 41 and permit the latter to close the valve 11, and cut ott the flow. This automatic action takes place when the flow to the burners is cut ott' eitherg manually or accidentally.
The improved device is primarily inten-ded to automatically cut ott the supply of gas to the burners in event of the tiow being interrupted from any cause so that when the pressure is restored, the gas will not reach the burners and pass therethrough without being lighted.
By this simple arrangement Hm escape of gas through open unlighted gas burners or jets is effectually and automatically prevented whether such escape is due to wind, interruption ot the gas pressure, overflow from cooking vessels, carelessness, or any other causes.
The preferred embodiment oi the invention is disclosed in the drawings and set forth in the specification, but it will beA understood that moditications within the scope ot' the claimed invention may be made in the construction without departing from the principle of the invention or saeritieing any o1" its advantages.
Having thus described my what l claim is 1. .In an automatic cut otl' tor gas burners, a controlling valve in the supply conductor adapted to be closed by a weighted lever, a poised supporting member, a thermostatic device coupled to said poised member and invention operative to control the movement thereof by change of temperature, a swinging arm connected to the weighted valve lever, a movable trip latch carried by said swinging arm, a stationary inclined stop 45 engaged by said trip latch to hold said swinging Vlever arm in position to hold the valve open, a swinging trip plate having a vertical terminal normally engaging the trip latch, and
a trip ringer swinging vupon the trip platev and limited in its movement in one direction and extending into the path of the poised supporting plate.
